Final Consensus On 2006 OOT

Author
Time
Now that everyone's had a chance to let these sink in, what is the final consensus? Are any of the fan-based LD transfers currently out better? Or is this the highest-quality copy of the OT in existence?

Isn't Mother's transfer the exact same quality as the OUT?

No. Although there are a couple serious flaws with the 2006 OOT from what I've seen:

1. Different parts of the frame wobble around independently of other parts- very bad effect. Don't know what even caused it
2. The DVD release of "Empire" is REALLY grainy

But Star Wars is the best quality anyone's ever seen it in, and so is ROTJ. ROTJ is pretty much perfect, I think- not as sharp as the 2004 version, but still good quality even for DVD.

Surely not "the highest-quality copy of the OT in existence" Shirley.

Change that to read "highest-quality copy of the OT released at retail" and you might get a consensus.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

It's the best quality I have of Star Wars. I have some bootleg, not sure who's, but it looks a little worse ... and, something I don't know if any bootlegs have .... is missing the original crawl.

Original crawl plus laserdisc image quality in the convenience of a DVD = best version of Star Wars available, imo.

(I don't have the other two yet, but if Best Buy continues the $10 price after this weekend of shopping hell, I will pick those up.)

"Final Consensus On 2006 OOT"

This thread is worthless without pictures...of the 2006 OOT being burnt to a crisp.

I'm just glad I didn't give into the fear and panic that was the norm a few weeks back and fork over $60-$90 of my hard earned money for them....now that they're 75% less I might take a look...not that I haven't seen them already though....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I should add that my bootlegs are anamorphic. I don't have a widescreen TV, so it makes no difference to me. But frankly, the original crawl trumps all for me. I would rather watch a tiny version of 1977 Star Wars than a wide version of 1981 revisionist crap Star Wars.

That's just me. Your mileage may vary.

The EditDroid release has the original crawl (recreated, but still original). Hence, I see no need to buy something that only looks marginally better than a bootleg.

I'm dissapointed with how it looks.

It's a real shame is all I have to say.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

The final consensus is that while they are marginally better than most bootlegs, and practically identical to the highest quality bootlegs (ie Moth3r PAL), the absurd price, extremely high grain level, gate weave, and all the artifacts and flaws of the original Laserdisk transfer that are still inherant (ie DVNR), make it a very dodgy release that although it is pleasing to some, it is so only out of the desperation for anything better than a Laserdisk rip (which this very nearly is).

The best version of the OOT I own- and probably will ever own (and yes, I ACTUALLY own them!)

This is the last hurrah for the OOT.

Probably better than any previous NTSC release. The PAL laserdisc transfers are probably the only thing better, at least until the X0 project. Star Wars and Empire look a lot clearer than my cowclops anamorphic bootleg and the black bars are really black. I didn't get Jedi because that film already looks pretty clear and the parts in Jabba's Palace that look murky (like Lapti Nek) are likely resulting from the DVNR.
Looking at both my bootlegs or the official discs, Empire may actually be in the worst shape. Star Wars has gotten a lot of talk about being in such bad shape but it seems that mostly, it was just the Tunisia scenes that faded or accumulated a lot of dirt. Empire it seems has a lot of noise and grain all over the place.
A lot of people have mentioned the Editdroid disc as being a good bootleg. Is that version included in the screenshot comparisons?

This is the best the O-OT has ever looked on home video to me (I haven't seen any pal versions on laserdisc).

Havent bought or seen them yet, from what Ive read Im less than impressed especially as I live in PAL land, so dont think I will splash the cash, I already have fan DVDs which I am happy with, so will stick with them...

My thoughts exactly. I don't think it can be said any better than this.

Does anyone know the last widescreen movie that was released non anamorphic before these?
I also would like to add that I hate nonanimorphic widescreen bonus features as well. I mean for the behind the scenes footage since that is usually 4:3 and would have to be false letterboxed. Mirrormask comes to mind. It's stupid to do that unless it's to format the picture for 16x9.

Out of nowhere I gotta ask, are the OOT released versions actually better to watch then dr gonzo's anamorphic set?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

As a big fan of Dr. Gonzo's set, I have to say Yes. However, I do not have a widescreen TV.

I don't know what the last one was, but I used to own the non-anamorphic DVD of "The Pink Panther Returns" (which I've since traded up to the anamorphic version), and I still own the non-anamorphic version of "Young Frankenstein" (which I won't be trading up for- since it looks really nice, and I hear the anamorphic version is cropped too much on the top and bottom). The non-anamorphic YF DVD came out in '98 I think, and the non-anamorphic TPPR DVD came out in '99.

Also, the "Yellow Submarine" DVD is non-anamorphic (and also now out-of-print). It came out in 1999.

The last non-anamorphic widescreen DVD´s I bought were from the Stanley Kubrick Collection in 2001. And yes, you can do anamorphic 1,66:1 transfers by shrinking the picture slightly horizontally. It is also debatable if Kubrick would have wanted his movies in 1,33:1 on DVD in times when widescreen TV´s are becoming standard now. He most certainly wanted them that way, because 1,33:1 open matte is much better than 1,33:1 pan & scan.

I still have quite a few non anomorphic DVDs left in my collection including The Thing, Escape from New York, Halloween 2 and Scarface which I brought when I first got my DVD player in early 1999 and I stopped seeing non anomorphic and buying them in around late 2000 they actually look good and still havent replaced them except Scarface which was such a terrible transfer and had to replace it with an anomorphic one because from the screenshots saw I such a difference between the two..

You know, that's probably true, sadly.
