Sigh. Well, at least he hasn't made Gandalf shoot first in the original DVDs. Shame. I WAS looking forward to this movie. Ah, well. I suppose that there are other moives I could watch instead.

I'm not sure he really wanted to make this film anyway. I'm beginning to think that this will never actually get made.

I bet it will, someday. They will do whatever they can to make more money, and the Hobbit is surefire sold out shows for a week during some holiday season. However, if they don't do it within the next few years while people can still remember the three Lord of the Rings films, then I can imagine it never getting made.

Who's giving odds on Brett Ratner being picked to direct? After stepping in on Red Dragon and then X3, I think he's Hollywood's "Go-To" Hack for cleanup.

Yes, it would be a nearly guaranteed success, but that doesn't mean that the studio can get it all together and make the film. It wouldn't be the first time. Look how long they had been trying to make another Superman film and all the different ideas that had been suggested. They started talking doing a new Superman movie about the time Batman and Robin came out, and they just got one out this year, with many different titles, plots, stars, etc. And as you said, they have much more of a time-limit with the recent release of LOTR than with a character such as Superman.

I don't think Jackson is necessary for "The Hobit." In fact, I think the two Ians are far more essential if they intend to tie it into LotR. They better hurry up though, Holm and McKellan aren't getting any younger...

How would New Line make a movie of the Hobbit without the same special effects team and the same actors? Will there be new actors to play Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond and the like? I thought the acting choices for those roles were good. In general though, a new director wouldn't be bad at all. Someone who could appreciate the original story more. The Hobbit is the best book of all time as far as I'm concerned.

I'd rather it doesn't if he doesn't.

He appreciates the original story, it's his interpreations of it that I take issue with.

No Hobbit without McKellen. No McKellen without Jackson. End of story.

Again, I think McKellan would certainly work with Brett Ratner again after X3. I'm banking on him getting picked for the part.

Sharpen your axes, fanboys.

Sigh. It's just so sad and unfair.

I agree with ADM that Ratner is the obvious choice, for both the reasons given - even though he would suck.

Now there's a boycott I can agree with.

It ain't over yet.. We can always try praying, I suppose.

This is very bad news. Not as bad as hearing that Robert Altman died (Rest In Peace, Rob) but still bad for the Tolkien film franchise.

There's various ways of looking at this:

a) New Line is trying to strong-arm Jackson into dropping the lawsuit;

b) Jackson is trying to strong-arm New Line into settling the lawsuit;

c) Jackson doesn't want to work with New Line anymore, so he's been using the lawsuit as a pretext to stall until the rights revert to Saul Zaentz - now that New Line is calling his bluff, he has to get MGM to pull out, hence the announcement to stir up the fans;

d) MGM doesn't want to split the deal with New Line, so they cooked this scheme up with Jackson from the start.

I'm going to give Jackson the benefit of the doubt and plump for a). But it's interesting to consider the alternatives.

Now if you want Jackson on board, you can't appeal to New Line's kindness - you have to appeal to them on a business level. So the sensible thing is to widely propagate a boycott of all New Line movies (and all Time Warner products?) until they sign him.

Of course, this won't make any difference if it's d), but it'll help for a), b) or c).

The other solution is to persuade George Lucas to buy New Line and give Jackson the green light, thus redeeming himself and unifying LOTR and SW fandom.

This really sucks. I read the news the other day on The Digital Bits and I almost didn't believe it, mostly because I didn't want to believe it. I think this is comparable to the Salkands firing Donner on Superman 2. The Hobbit just shouldn't be made at all if Jackson doesn't direct. I don't think it would even be accepted. If it is made without Jackson, the only way I'll be going into the theater is if McKellen and Holm return in thier roles.

...which is unlikely at best without Jackson. Not to mention no WETA.

Brett Ratner? What? That's terrible!

If I were to do it, I'd keep the same actors (Ian Holm is I am afraid much too old... my first pick would be Martin Freeman... and get him to learn how to act as Ian as Bilbo as much as possible), keep it with the same visual universe as the films, not screw up and hollywoodify the story (just break down the hobbit storyline to a more fit-for-film version.. like eliminating Beorn but keeping him for the Extended Edition), and get as much of the crewmembers from it's precursor as possible.

Those things should be top-priority for any stupid director (out in hollyweird right now) who would try to do The Hobbit. Hell, just get me to do it!

hmmm i look at that as a good thing. as good as LOTR was, there were parts that were jsut not edited properly, scenes were too long or too drawn out, other things were rushed. it will be cool to see another directors take on it.

SWEET!!! I disliked the movies he made of the some of greatest books ever (IMHO that is!!) I would hate to see the Hobbit ruined in the same manner.

I enjoy Jackson's LOTR and am disappointed that there will not be a production of The Hobbit by the same team.

However, it's always interesting to see what different teams do with material from the same source. My hope is that, if a new team is assembled for The Hobbit, that they make their own version, not what they think Peter Jackson, or fans of Jackson's LOTR films, would want to make.

Brett Ratner can bite my shiny, metal ass. Red Dragon was one of the most painful cinematic experiences I have had in my young life.
Don't you call me a mindless philosopher...!
