Darth Vader's Paternity Test Results

When does Darth Vader realize Luke Skywalker is his son?

Is there some moment in The Empire Strikes Back when the lightbulb goes off over Darth's helmet and he has that "Ah-Ha!" moment?

Or is it offscreen between Star Wars and Empire, with the audience left to decide whether Darth sensed it via the Force, or figured it out once someone told him the DeathStar-destroying X-Wing pilot's last name was Skywalker?

If it's through some force-sensitivity, is there any explanation ever given for why Vader doesn't realize Leia's his daughter, even though they come into contact with each other several times? It might have made a difference when it came time to torture her for information. In fact, if Vader's so strong with the Force, I think he should have realized the connection during their first conversation ("You are part of the rebel alliance and a traitor ...... oh, and my daughter!")

Is there something I'm missing from the movies about Darth Vader's faulty dad-dar? Is there anything in the EU that sheds light on this subject? Or do you have any personal, wild theories?

I think it may have been covered in "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" by Alan Dean Foster which takes places between ANH and ESB I believe.

You'll have to forgive me though, I haven't read it since I was a kid!

Leia never uses The Force in the movies. Vader feels Luke when he uses The Force, so I guess you can sense someone as Force-sensitive only when he/she is using it.
I guess that Vader simply put two and two together. Force-sensitive & Skywalker name & Obi-Wan & The right age => Vader's child.

It happens after the credits roll in ANH (the ADigitalMan edition).

That question is the fault of Lucas redoing the OOT, in which Vader only knows about Luke 90 minutes before the end of ESB.
If you want an answer, according to Lucas revisionist PT story, the name skywalker is a dead giveaway for Vader. Its like if Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky had a child named Bill Clinton jr. and he lived Arkansas with Roger Clinton for the first 20 years of his life.

hmm I think the last name skywalker and the lightsaber he waves around that Annie built prettymuch helped vader piece things together...

that's only if it wasn't just a force thing. In esb we hear vader say "search your feelings, you know it be true..."
He big in nothing important in good elephant.

"Miss you, I will, Original Trilogy..."

"Your midichlorians are weak, Old man." -Darth Vader 2007 super deluxe extra special dipped in chocolate sauce edition.

I always thought it makes "click" during the battle of yavin - even moreso as ADigitalMan already suggested, during his lengthy flight home with emergency hyperspace limping to the next imperial gas station out there.

I think that during the battle of yavin would be where he got the hunch. Feeling the force inside Luke, the bond they shared. Then he probably investigated where he came from between SW and ESB, and figured it out then.
