Adywan, have you considered at all my suggestion about the music in the choking scene?

Adywan, while I love what the music does to these scenes, I'm thinking perhaps you should change the music used when Vader is choking Motti ("Sidious Revealed" from ROTS). Yes, it does sound good, but it was just used in the film prior to it (ROTS). I'm of the opinion that it's ok if some of the same film music is used more than once, but only if it re-appears in the OTHER trilogy and is not close in proximity to the film where the music was drawn from. You know what I'm saying? For example, if you could find some fitting music from TPM or AOTC, that would be preferrable.

BTW, I like the idea of the swashbucking rendition of Qui-Gon's theme from the TPM track, "Qui-Gon & Darth Maul Meet" being played just as Obi-Wan is struck down.

The way i feel about the music is that it should fit the mood of the scene so i'm not really worried if it has appeared in the previous film. That would limit my options to get the best piece of music for the scene and its hard enough to find the correct portion as it is. lol. As i will be mixing several pieces of music to form a scene, so i can achieve the emotional value that suits it, i'ts more of a re-occuring theme than a whole section used ( like a lot of the music in the PT)

I'm sticking to music by John Williams for my edit and , if it is possible, the music will only come from the Star Wars saga.

Well things are just about to grind to a hault. I've got about 10GB left of available hard drive space which will probably cover me for doing about another 10 minutes or so of footage. I'm up to the Cantina scene now. All Death Star shots up to that point are complete, I've tweaked the torture droid so it doesn't look like a crappy syringe anymore, slightly modified the Mos Eisley sequence, a re-editing of Kenobi's hut sequence ( the conversation about Luke's father is now one long conversation and not split by the hologram scene). I recon i can get together about 1/3 of the money needed for the new hard drive myself within a week or so but that would be the most i could get until after X-mas. God its expensive being a father to 3 teenage girls.

I have been pricing up various hard drives and it looks like i'm going to have to go for something like a SATA2 500GB drive which will cost about £150 (approx $280).

Anyway, and i was hoping that i wouldn't have to do this, it looks like i will go down the route suggested by a few members and set up a donation system. I have a Paypal account so you can donate toward the new drive through that. My paypal address is:

adywan AT hotmail.co.uk (of course change the AT to @ and remove the spaces).

If you donate could you also please send me an email at the same address with your forum name please so i know who you are . I really do hate asking for something like this because there are some that just want to get paid for their work ( I'm not saying on these forums but i have seen it on others), and i don't, so please don't think that this is the reason that i have asked for donations. I'm pretty new to paypal but instructions on how to send donations through paypal can be found here:

Paypal instructions

I was reading on one page when trying to find out how to set this all up that you shouldn't put "donation" in any of your messages but just something like "thanks". Not too sure why because it didn't say. It's all new to me. lol. If anyone knows the reason why i'd love to know ( because i hate mysteries. )

Once i have reached the target then i will inform everyone here and if any other donations come through after the target has been met then they will be refused through my paypal, but i will thank all.

Thanks to everyone for all their help and suggestions. Keep the ideas and input coming because, as always, your input is invaluable for this edit. And thanks to everyone who PM'ed me with offers of support. It is always greatly appreciated.

Well theres good news, and there's bad news. .....

The bad news is that i have now completely run out of hard drive space....

The good news is that, thanks to all of you guys, i have just over half the money needed for the new drive. I'd like to say a HUGE thanks to everyone that has donated. This project would be dead for a long while without you all.

I've sent you all an email thanking you and hopefully i haven't missed anyone out. If i have then please PM me. For everyone that has donated i'm going to be sending you an email or PM next week sometime with a link so that you can view a small montage of exclusive new clips that i haven't posted here , as a small thanks.

Once again thank you all. Fingers crossed it shouldn't be too long now before i can start things up again.

Sweet! Glad to hear it.

Hey, maybe you should start the AdyWan "Hyperspace" club. LOL!

Is there a magazine you could send us?

Seriously though, Adywan, thanks for throwing those extras in there, that's very cool of you. Besides, it's only been a day, you might still get some donations. Some people only check the thread once a week or so.

I was going to post a midsized drive, but seeing that this is rolling then I'll put the post money into your fundage instead so you can get the size you need!
I dunno about the UK but 320GB drives are the sweetspot here, much cheaper to get a pair of those rather than a single 500, plus you can stripe them and get decent transfer rates.

That's why I love this forum. All you guys are really awesome. And you've proved it over and over again.

I knew you'd come through on this.

Thanks laserman.

I wish i lived in the states. Over here a 320gb drive costs about just £10 (about $15) less than a 500gb one. But we're use to getting ripped off on prices over here.

Adywan,

I don't know where you've been looking in the UK but I just bought a 320GB Seagate External Drive from PC World for £79.99 at the weekend.

Looking on Dabs, it appears it's £70 for 320GB, £100 for 400GB and £120 for 500GB, so I would agree with Laserman that 320 is the current sweetspot.

Thanks for pointing me to Dabs.com DVD-BOY. Their prices are a lot better than i had seen. I had one of PcWorlds external drives and thats the one that packed up a few months ago. it was only a few months old & still under guarantee and they refused to refund or replace it saying that i over-used it (total cop-out excuse) so i won't be getting one from there.

Two 320Gb ones would be ideal but thats £40 more than a 500GB one and everyones been so kind with their donations (which i seriously can't thanks them enough) and i feel that holding out til i have enough money to get 2 drives would be taking advantsge of their generosity when i stated that i just needed 1 drive.

That's not holding out. You told us you needed "about £150 (approx $280)" for a SATA2 500GB hard drive. If you're able to get something comparable or better for "about" (or "approx") that price, go for it! Just be happy with what you choose.

Get the two drives, that way you can get one *now* and get back working on the edit

70 Quid shipped seems to be the going rate for a 320GB, so it is only 20 dollarpounds difference between the two solutions, I can spot you that.

Also, with your dead external drive, if it is a Seagate contact them directly and they will absolutely replace it.
If you don't know what brand it is open it up and it will probably be a seagate or Western Digital drive inside, and you can contact Seagate or WD directly to get the drive replaced under their warranty, you can do it right on the seagate website - you just pay postage.

adywan. go back to pcworld and get your drive changed.

sales of goods act 1978 I think it is. you bought the goods from them, they MUST either

1) replace the item
2) send the item for repair (considering its a hard drive, won't happen)
3) offer an alternative item of equivalent value
4) refund you
5) offer you vouchers to the value of

you gave them an opportunity to respond, they refused. hard drive has been overworked is not a valid excuse. the product is covered under the sales of goods act.

if they refuse, contact trading standards, they will give them short shrift over this. in addition, if you bought it by credit card, contact your credit card company and get them involved. they will come down on pc world like a ton of bricks.

BTW. where in UK are you? I'm in leeds. can talk to you about this on phone for more detail if you are interested.

I agree, This is a place you need to speak to, I used to work in an advice centre we would tell people about this place, for them to contact.

Thanks for the advice. I did try trading standards but they were no help whatsoever. PCWorld refused a repair because it was a hard drive, they did offer to replace it for another drive, which i agreed to until they came back with the new drive to the counter. A 160Gb one. I refused a drive of half the capacity as a refund and thats when they turned on me. I said that their offer just wasn't acceptable and they told me that they wouldn't be getting anymore of the seagate drives that i had and their new range would be £40 more expensive and the 160Gb one is the only external drive that was the same price as my 360GB one. They then offered that if i paid them the £40 that they would deliver the new drive to me once they had them in stock. beacuse they had made an offer, even though it was totally unacceptable, they had covered their backs. I went to the local C.A.B and was told the same.

A few weeks later they advertised the same drive for the same £79 price so i went back to PCWorld with the faulty drive and they said that because i refused their original offer that they would not replace the drive. I refused to leave the shop until they homoured their guarantee agreement so they called the police and i was forecable evicted from the shop. It turns out that the manager had told the police that i had been abusive and threatening towards the staff, which was a laugh because i'm probably the most calm person in the world in these type of situations. Even one of the customers came out to tell the police that i hadn't done anything, but the one copper said that "they know what my sort are like" refering to the fact that i have long hair and a leather jacket, and that the manager had banned me for life from the store and if i ever set foot in there again that i would be arrested.

Its a joke. Just type PCWORLD complaints into google and you'll see what i mean. They are part of as huge company that also own Dixons, currys and others.i would never buy anything from them ever again. Not only that but the drive in the seagate unit wasn't a seagate so seagate refused to replace it under their warrenty. makes you wonder where they get their stock from. I'll probably get PCWorld trying to sue me know for the things i've wrote but let them try. lol

Anyway, rant over. I just ordered a 360GB internal drive so i should be getting back into the edit next week and then i'll get the second one once i have enough money. The total is not far away now. i never thought that i would be able to get started again so soon. A HUGE thanks to everyone that has helped out.

Adywan,

What make was the drive you had problems with at PCWorld, because you can always RMA it yourself if you are within warranty.

This is one reason why I go for Seagate, as they have a 5 year warranty.

Yup just return it directly to seagate yourself, they are very good with returns.
Just go here
http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp

or start here if you aren't sure of the model etc.

http://www.seagate.com/support/service/index.html

They will usually get you a new drive within a couple of weeks - well worth it.

If it says seagate on the external box then they should honor it (it could be a maxtor in which case they will also replace it)

What brand drive was on the inside of the thing?
If it is not a seagate then inform seagate that PC world are selling counterfeit product, I'd also write to the UK computer magazines and tell them what happened, they love stories like this and quite often get something to happen...

i'm pretty sure it was an IBM drive but i took the drive out and chucked it away keeping the caddy for a new drive. I never realised that seagate might replace it. Guess i was so cheesed off with what happened with PCWorld & having Trading standards not interested in helping me, that i just didn't think.

Anyway, Had a pretty good day yesterday. Ordered the one 320gb drive the other day for delivery on saturday , but recieved an email that there had been a stock mistake and they haven't any 320Gb ones left so they would be sending a replacement drive instead. Great, i thought, they'd be sending me a 250GB one that was around the same price. But no. Opened the parcel yesterday and inside was a brand spanking new 400GB ATA 133 drive. i just couldnt belive that they had done this as the 400gb one was £30 more but they have only charged me for the 320 internal that i originally ordered. So I'm back to having space so i can carry on with the edit (after i've reorganised a lot of the files cuz i'm losing track of what i need and what i can keep. lol) I couldn't have even started to do this again until after X-mas at least if it wasn't for everyone that has donated. I'm not too far off now being able to afford the other 320gb one that'll giove me enough space to get this all finsihed without the worry of running out of space again. I can't thank everyone enough. I'll get the clips i promised to everyone who donated online later this week. I'll send the link to the email addresses you sent me

thanks again

I've been thinking about this and i wanted to do something completely different for this edit. I'm going to be painting an original poster for the cover artwork instead of using artwork already out there, but it will be based on the original OT poster art. I'm more than likely going to have the spines match the official releases so they fit in with whats out there. I'm planning the covers now and have done a few sketches but i haven't nailed the design just yet. I'm going to be leaving the painting side of things until after X-mas when all the kids pressies are out of the way and i've got more room to work.

I'm just completing the cantina sequence and i'm really pleased with the result. Most of the creatures now have facial movements and my favourite of them all is Greedo. I've enhanced his mouth so he looks like he's actually saying his dialogue now, well as best as i can anyway. He has more muscular facial movements, looks more aggresive and now blinks. As soon as i have this sequence finished then i will be rendering the montage for all those that have donated and then i'll send you the link. Sorry its been a bit later than i promised guys but after i started the cantina and Greedo i really wanted to be able to include a few shots of this for you and probably the whole Greedo sequence if possible..
Things seem to be flying along since i got the new hard drive. Having more this drive has given me the oportunity to experiment on effects without having to worry about running out of space for the edit too soon. I've also almost finished the colour correction for the whole film. Some scenes are just impossible to change the colour balance back to what it originally should have looked like because they are just so messed up that the blue cast must have been added to hide these flaws, but luckily these scenes look ok with just a minor tweak. I've brightened a few sequences because they were just way too dark on the DVDs but it has brought out some minor video noise. But to be honest i can do with a bit of grain if it means i can see the scene without having to turn the brightness up on the TV.

Oh well, back to work
