PC games provide an easier input for shooter games, easier internet multiplayer, and are perfect for some games such as adventures. Consoles provide almost no compatibility issues, but are very strict and get obsolete faster - you can't upgrade it easily.

Because I don't waste money on consoles I've never had a problem updating my PC every other year with newer better hardware and have never had a problem playing any game on it. Not only do I use it for the latest greatest games in high-def on my bigscreen, just like a console, but I bought two playstation2 controllers and a single usb converter and I can use them to play any game that doesn't absolutely require a mouse. PCs are very versatile and adabtable, both the cell processor and blu-ray/hd-dvd drives will be improved upon and released for PCs and you can simply update those parts instead of having to buy an entirely new system, that's bleeding-edge technology!

If we are lucky the Wii will fix that first part hopefully. It will be great for shooters and stuff, if done properly by the developer. True you can't upgrade as easily, but with consoles upgrading isn't really neccesary, especially with the way new systems come out every 10ish years. We shall see though.

Oh yeah, about Jaster Mareel's comment about the price and all on the first page, PS2, GC & Xbox games were all $49.99 when they came out. Games on CD were able to be a steady price, unlike the cartridge games on the Nintendo consoles (I usAe Nintendo cause they had the most cartridged based consoles). If you remember the games varied from like 40 bucks from anywhere to like 60 maybe even 70 bucks (Hey You Pikachu! was expensive) The Xbox 360 games are only $59.99, they only went up 10 bucks. PS3 games are going up 20 bucks, that's the main reason people are complaining.

They have to realize though that the reason for the expense is the fact that they are on bluRay discs. Games don't start off high, they normally start off at the price they are gonna be for the rest of the consoles life span. As for Jasters comment about the console wars, it's really kind of a stupid comment. I mean that, not in an asshole way, but it's just that the same thing happens in sports and in peoples taste for cars. There are people that despise Fords or Chevrelots, yet there are people that love those two also. It's just the way it is. I happen to be one that, while not crazy for Microsoft, accept all 3 systems. I probably won't get all three, definitely getting the Wii, because I can't afford $600 for the PS3, cause face it the $500 version sucks and is more of a waste of money than the more expensive version cause it lacks some almost basic stuff. I have no interest in the games for 360 so I won't get that. I personally hope 360 fails only cause I mainly really don't like Microsoft, as mentioned before, and am more of a Nintendo fan than anything. I also think the PS3 is gonna have a hard battle with the price.

Last comment. The price does seem high, but if you think about it, there is a bluRay player, which alone would sell for a lot more, and it is using a lot of technology. Luke Skywalker makes a post on the first page about how it has more hardware than 360 & Wii. All I have to say is that it's stupid to compare PS3 & Xbox 360 to Wii because Nintendo has already said it's not competing with them. In a sense it's obivously competing with them, but it's going a different direction: innovation, they are going with more power & better graphics. And to his comment about bashing the system, people can do what they want and if they want to bash the system let them. If it annoys you, ignore them. And I don't think PS3 is gonna outsell the competition without a doubt. Anyone that followed E3 knows that the Wii had the longest lines in the history of E3. If Nintendo can keep that hype and deliver on what they are doing, they are gonna do really well.

Just my two cents, sorry for the long post, really just wanted to say that first thing I said.

Yeah, I think a lot of people place too much faith in the 'Playstation' brand name to sell systems. To my reckoning, the original PSX came out of nowhere and was readily accepted by the mainstream after a vigorous worldwide advertising campaign. It can go the other way just as quickly: one need only look at the Megadrive and then its successors to know that a brand name is not enough. My beloved Sega probably thought that the Playstation was nothing to worry about in the early days, but after the 'failure' of the Saturn, it was near impossible to get up again.

If Sony lets up one iota, then they will lose their hold on the market.

Actually the short history of the playstation is this. Nintendo was working with Sony to create a CD-based add-on for the Super Nintendo. Near the finalization of the add-on, which was called PSX for Play Station Experimental (hence the abbreviation for anybody who was wondering), Nintendo realized that Sony would gain a large degree of control despite their leading position in the video game market. Nintendo then went to Phillips and that's when the CD-i thing came out. The basically betrayed Sony in a business sense and Sony was thinking of halting their research but decided to make it a complete, stand alone console.

You can read the development of it here: PS Development but it doesn't mention anything about it being called PSX. I'm pretty sure that it was though, cause I read about that a while ago on a completely different site, and wikipedia doesn't necessarily have all the information proper.

I remember back in the days of NES, Star Wars was 49.99 GBP (no pound sign on this US keyboard). 49.99 in the late 80s!! I never did get that game because I could never afford it. Hell, I couldn't even afford it today for 49.99. Computer games are a rip off. Best to wait a few months for when they release the titles on their platinum series or whatever it's called.

Yeah, I already knew about that, and so do most serious gamers - but the mainstream has absolutely no idea about this piece of history; in fact, I would wager that there are millions of PSX and PS2 owners who aren't clued in on this at all - so what I said still stands.

Time to ressucitate this thread with some facts from the launch in Japan. No more tha 80 thousand consoles were put to sale, and it was over pretty quickly. But check this out - I DON'T KNOW the source because a friend of mine copy and pasted to me:

This is the true face of the PlayStation 3 debut in Japan. Hardcore gamers are not here waiting in line overnight, buying a first-run PS3, and running home to play some good old next-gen gaming. Rather, opportunistic Japanese businessmen have the largest presence, hiring poor Chinese men and women to wait in line for a PS3, one which will later be sold on web auctions to wealthy gamers around the world for exorbitant amounts of money.

And I suspect Sony is behind this. The console is being sold at a price that would not allow Sony to have a profit, being so expensive to produce and bizarrely extravagant (check out the INSIDES of a PS3), that Sony has to come to other resources to recoup its investment, like charging fees for game usage, for the network, and royalties for the games. So, what I suspect Sony is doing is to create a paralel black market to get more money for a console that is, initially, expensive already. They've already closed down LEGITIMATE international import websites in Asia and South America so THEY can have this piece of the pie...

Also, do you remember how the prequel trilogies were released in fewer theaters than regular for a massive blockbuster just to generate lines? So there...

History repeats itself indeed...

so i guess microsoft must have hired poor american people to do the same thing in north america right?

i remember an xbox360 going for around $15000 US on ebay last year..

there is no conspiracy behind this... its clear that both companies are always going to be having a pissing competition... and when they realize they can't pee that far, its the consumers who get screwed.

unless your one of the lucky ones who puts a system up on ebay...

Ultimately, Microsoft and Sony both benifit from shortages and long lines. They gets lots of press about how 'popular' their system is and how many people are wanting it. Never mind that the lines and shortages are generated because the company intentionally made too few systems. Fortunately, it seems like from the XBox 360 release that the press has started getting wise to this tactic and has started to report that the company hasn't made enough instead of "they are so popular!".

That delayed it quite a while, but not the only, or even main reason for the small number of systems being released. Remember the XBox 360 ended up going to market without the HD-DVD drive. And there was still these shortages for them, and big lines. The PS2 and X-Box had the same thing happen, big lines at opening day. Even back to the release of systems like the N64, there were only a handful of systems shipped, big shortages, and long lines at the stores. This is simply how companies release systems nowadays. Shots of big lines make news. That is what Sony is after. They want to show how 'popular' and 'in-demand' the system is and get press and generate hype.

I'm Tired of Sony's Bullshit

You may know Sony most readily as the company that recently recalled something on the order of every laptop battery ever made because of a small glitch (they explode). Then there was the "rootkit" debacle, where Sony secretly installed hidden bullshit on your computer. One of Sony BMG's presidents handled the situation with the delicacy of a gang rape with this quote: "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" Good point, shit-head! And before that, Sony was known for its shitty optical drives in their PS2s, resulting in a class action lawsuit. The word "shitty" in the previous sentence is a bit misleading, since I also use the word to describe Renée Zellweger's life, and having to void your warranty by adjusting a cog to fix a misaligned laser inside your PS2 is slightly shittier.

Not content with the reaming they give consumers with their shoddy products and condescending attitude, Sony determined that it didn't have enough bad press, so they decided to wield their giant gnarled cock of corporate greed again, this time training it on a small-time import shop called "Lik Sang." Lik Sang was a haven for nerds who wanted to import games and systems from other countries. It turns out that Lik Sang broke some major laws that not only earned them the scorn of Sony, but pissed Sony off to the point where they sued Lik Sang into oblivion. So what was this grave infraction committed against Sony that not only threatened the very foundation of this giant multi-national corporation, but warranted destroying the lives and careers of a group of dorks running a gaming website? Simple: they committed the mortal sin of selling Japanese PSPs to European gamers. Oh no! Not that!

When I read the law suit, I did a double take to make sure I read it correctly. Sony is suing to prevent people from selling PSPs? Great move, morons! Because if there's anything Sony needs right now, it's fewer people buying PSPs. In fact, PSP sales are part of the reason Sony expects to lose $1.7 billion dollars in their gaming division by March. That means that I and anyone else who makes any money at all between now and March (or at least manages not to lose more than $1,699,999,999.99) will officially make more money than Sony's gaming division. I rule.

This isn't the first time Sony bullied a gaming website for selling PSP imports. In June of 2005, Sony sued a website called ElectricBirdLand (Sony literally hired men in dark sunglasses to deliver the papers to the defendant, because Sony is insecure about the size of its penis), stating that the sale of Japanese PSPs to the UK could hurt their ability to exploit the "excitement and anticipation of the market." Hey Sony, you know what else could help you exploit the excitement and anticipation of the market? The PSP not sucking:

Sony's strategy towards portable gaming seems to be to take the same shitty first generation Playstation games that weren't great to begin with, and make them portable so now we can take an example of Sony's utter-inability-to-stop-sucking with us everywhere we go. SNORE. Nobody wants to buy movies in your stupid proprietary format, assholes!

So why does a company that relies on consumer satisfaction and brand recognition treat its fans with such contempt? Because...

Sony hates you.

Sony would love nothing more than to see you and your family suffer. Sony is like that psycho-ex who you had a few good times with, but was too clingy and the sex got boring. Now it's over and Sony is still stewing about it by leaving you voice mail asking for another chance and promising it "can change."

Tough shit Sony. We've moved on. We're dating your younger, hotter sister, Wii. Even your fuglier step-sister, Xbox 360, looks hotter than you do. At least she's been around the block a few times and knows how to turn tricks. You've got nothing, and it's going to stay that way until you stop being a crabby old cunt.

Great article. About the Lik Sang lawsuit, I mentioned it here on this forum when it happened. That was absolutely ridiculous. It only feeds up to Sony's bad rep, such a greedy move to prevent people to legally pay less for a videogame console... And it also feeds up my convictions that Sony actually hired those people to buy all the PS3 on release and sell them for 2000 dollars on ebay, so Sony can profit even more (few people know the console costs MORE than 500 dollars to make).

I heard today on the radio that PS3's backwards compatibility is apparently buggy and that some people are having trouble playing PS1 and PS2 games on it.
...
MSNBC article says about 200 older games will have audio issues with the PS3. A fix will be made available in the future.

Disaster strikes and Nintendo will laugh all the way to the bank on this one. I just can't comprehend why Sony is continuously shooting themselves in the foot like this. Are they really so greedy that they'll do ANYTHING to make a buck at the cost of their reputation.

Well that's pretty much the end for Sony Computer Entertainment, but not for Sony itself. guess we're gonna see a Microsoft x Nintendo fight on the future like Sega and Nintendo on the early 90s.

Read this article: The Wiikly it's very interesting. It basically explains why Microsoft really entered the console market. When you get to the fifth page, it says that when all the reasons for Microsoft to enter the console market evaporate, they will likely pull out. So there is a chance if Sony screws themselves up enough this time around Microsoft might not make another console and Nintendo would have none or get knew competition.

wow i love the fanboyism in this thread....

I forgot that xbox360 had a great release... oh wait...
xbox's were overheating, still have problems with backwards compatibility, and even not too long ago fried numerous consoles because of an online update. To this day we get at least 1 or 2 xbox's returned to FutureShop for warranty or repairs.

But im glad everyone here did they're homework.

Second Nintendo hasn't even come out yet!!!
Why are all these little kids proclaiming it the winner when the system hasn't even been released?

Are they that hurt by the absolutly shitty Gamecube they released? And people put down Sony for including a Blu Ray drive because they say they have no need for it. But at least it can play DVD's. Nintendo Wii can't even play DVDs!!

But do you hear people bitching and complaining about how stupid they are? Not at all.

Let's face it.
Sony has been the scapegoat from day one, and those who know nothing about game consoles simply jump on the bandwagon because they have nothing intelligent to say themselves.

Am i saying that Sony is perfect? Fuck no.
Far from it.

But for a company to release a console which (hardware wise) is the most powerful system on the market, is offering free online service similar to xboxlive, is backwards compatible for not 1, but 2 different games systems, is offering a Blu Ray player, and is capable at playing games in HD i really don't see why they're release should go off perfect.

No console release has went off perfect!
No console release will ever go off perfect. People either need to start accepting that, or stop buying them.

Of course everyone on forums all over the world believe themselves to be much smarter when it comes to the video game industry. As if they've worked for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and know all there is to know about the video game console market. If so then please feel free to release your own system bug free and charge next to nothing for it.

Until then... i think people should just shut up and enjoy what they fucking get. lol
All i've heard from day of the next gen console release is bitching and complaining on everyside.

You want a perfect gaming system. Get a computer.
Not only should you already have one if your here, but if anything goes wrong with it, the only person you should be bitching at is yourself!

First off I want to say that the GameCube was not shitty. The reason that the Cube seems shitty was because it had hardly any 3rd party supporters. The Cube would have done much better if it had more 3rd party support. About the 3rd party support for Cube: "Microsoft’s third party line-up is not exactly what it appears. I came across this from an anonymous developer:

"The Gamecube fell WAY behind in 3rd party support. They did great with first party- but a lot of big games ignored the 'Cube."

This may be how it appeared from the outside, but I can ensure you that this is not how it worked inside of the industry; there were lots of developers who wanted to bring games to the Gamecube but (as I will explain in a moment) were pressured by their publisher to put the games on other platforms.

When Microsoft entered the Console world they started spending insane amounts of money to buy exclusive support, ports or to simply prevent the Gamecube from getting ports; in Microsoft's world they believed that if they had enough third party exclusives (or at least the best looking version of a game) they would be as successful as the PS2. I know of several times when Microsoft paid publishers millions of dollars to ensure that the Gamecube would not get a port of a particular game."
-TheWiikly.com (starts at Popular Excuse 3)

As to Nintendo not including DVD support in their system, answer this, how many DVD players do you have in your house? Okay so your answer is most likely more than one, especially if you include your computer. Nintendo did not include DVD support in their system because they want to make the system inexpensive and while DVD playback might not have really raised the price all that much, so be it, it's not a big loss. Besides, you can always buy a better stand alone DVD player for a better price then the DVD players that come in a system. Nintendo is going for the mass market and there goal is to get more people to start playing video games again. Certain things, IMHO, do not need to be in a video game console and a DVD player is one of those.
