Adywan,

What about the rocky moon from Star Trek II that becomes the Genesis planet?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Wow, you must be psychic. I've actually got Star Trek 2 in my drive and looking at the Genesis planet now. Unfortunately it doesn't look as good as i remember it. It looks too "old" CGI and not the natural look that i am looking for.

Adywan, while I love what the music does to these scenes, I'm thinking perhaps you should change the music used when Vader is choking Motti ("Sidious Revealed" from ROTS). Yes, it does sound good, but it was just used in the film prior to it (ROTS). I'm of the opinion that it's ok if some of the same film music is used more than once, but only if it re-appears in the OTHER trilogy and is not close in proximity to the film where the music was drawn from. You know what I'm saying? For example, if you could find some fitting music from TPM or AOTC, that would be preferrable.

BTW, I like the idea of the swashbucking rendition of Qui-Gon's theme from the TPM track, "Qui-Gon & Darth Maul Meet" being played just as Obi-Wan is struck down.

I think the blue planet looks perfect. I would just think that it's just some random planet under imperial control. The whole scene looks so great with the blue planet background.

The only thing I can see that looks a little off, is in the second shot of the DS, the starfield and the DS seem to be moving too much. Other than that, I love it.

I liked the blue planet as well and hadn't really thought that it was Alderaan. I think the suggestions are mostly helpful, but anyone who really wants to state their case for a different planet, maybe they could provide a hi-res example to 'audition' for the part.

That's a great idea Sluggo i have to admit i'm plugging for the blue planet after trying loads of other options, but if someone comes up with a better idea then i'm open to ideas.

Oh, many thanks again for the pics, Sluggo.

Yeh, you're right. I've just gone back and checked and i've selected the wrong layers for the stardestroyers & planet when i rendered it. So many layers to make up this one shot it gets a bit confusing. lol. I've fixed it now

Hey Adywan,

What about using www.nasa.gov for planetary images? As crazy as it sounds, they have very high resolution pictures of planets that can be altered, colored, or manipulated to maybe fit the profile for this "rock planet idea". Here's a link to one such gallery of Mercury:

http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/targetFamily/Mercury?start=10

Let me know if you want maybe some photoshoped for some ideas let me know!

Adywan,

Do you have a Paypal account? I'd be interested in contributing some money toward a new hard drive. And if anyone else can or would like to help out, please do.

I'd hate to see this project delayed over something as simple as hard drive space.

I'd be down for that.

Oh, and I just remembered Space dot com has some cool wallpaper galleries of fan-made planets and stuffs. Maybe worth a look.

This is a rough idea, I aplogize for the resolution of the Death Star. Workable?

I don't know if a dead planet like that would need an atmosphere.
Author
Time
Yeah probably not, but I was thinking in a more visual idea because without the little bit of an edge of atmosphere it looked a little flat but I get what you mean.

Little fact- the planet in my composite is in fact Jupiter's moon Europa. I love how unique and ancient it looks and it looks like it was mined to depeltion to make the metal for the Death Star.

Adywan. Yours is the edit I await the most. It seems like it's going to be an audio visual feast. I have two suggestions/requests. The (probe?) droid used on Leia during her interrogation has always bugged me. Even as a child that damn syringe just took me out of the movie. If there is a way you can alter/erase it, I think it would be great. And the Death Star explosion. The new one is just bad. The original was not really scaled right. It would be nice to see the explosion scaled correctly, with a slightly slower, and more dense cloud of debris. I can see it in my head, but I can't describe it very well. It just seems that the explosion shown is about 1/1000th the density that it should be, if that makes sense. Anyway, keep up the great work.

First off: I cannot wait for this. It's like the special edition we should have gotten.
Second off: I'd like to add my support for the blue planet. When I watch edits like this, I try to set my mind in a "I've never seen this before" state. In this scene, all this is is a blue planet. Even if I wasn't trying to forget everything I knew about the movie, later in the movie Tarkin says to set course for Alderaan. Why would he do that if he was already there? The planet could be something like Mon Calamari, known for being enslaved by the empire, or could be something else completely. I was less drawn to the planet as I was to the reveal of the Death Star.

Yeah, that syringe has bugged me a little too. I figured it was some kind of truth serum. I wonder what the scene would look like with some kind of electrodes sticking out with a blue current arcing across it?

Europa looks cool there, but if they actually were building the DS there, I'd expect at least some visable settlement or machinery on the surface. I still like the current blue planet. It has grandeur.

I wonder how the scene would look with a Borg cube?

Here's what I came up with as an example:

It's nothing spectacular but with a little work I might be able to make it a bit more convincing. .. or I could just forward the texture map itself

Hey Adywan I know that this is from wayyy far back but I forget your answer on this, rain or no rain?

I just really like the idea that out of all six movies, it rains on Tatoonie ONCE. When? When everything begins to change. When a new hope is possible. A cleansing rain.
And I wouldn’t have it pour…just begin to sprinkle. My image has too much rain in it.

Hmmmm....I'm going to have to disagree with everyone and say I think the sequence is either a little long, or a little out of place. It's also a little too close to much of the RotJ DS stuff (and personally, I think the whole DS2 thing was pushing the movies into redundancy a little). The other problem is that you've used a HUGE amount of the ESB star destoyer fleet footage, which is going to feel re-used if and when you come to do that film, flopped, cropped, and repositioned though it may be. Also, I kinda think the full-on, ass-kicking ESB version of the Imperial March doesn't really belong here, as it takes away from it's introduction in ESB, and the re-introduction of Vader in that movie. I can certainly see using a phrase from it being quoted somewhere in the film, but not the whole march. I dunno, the whole thing about SW:ANH, is that it was ruthlessly edited; fast paced cuts, only as many shots as were needed to move the story along, very tight and economical. As the budget got bigger, and ILM got better at turning shots out over the series, the style definetly changed a bit but I think it's largely veering away from that approach that makes the official SE stuff stand out so badly in ANH. I see where you're going with this sequence, but I for one think it needs to be pared down a bit.
Author
Time
If this is the case, maybe adywan could look at cutting down the 'other' big introduction of the Death Star: When it is discovered by Han and crew when they arrive where Alderaan used to be.

camera angle on the death star is confusing. It's hard to tell if the DS is further away than the planet or closer if the latter perhaps a slight overlapping of the planet would give a better perspective.

He said rain will not be in the finished film, but possibly as an "extra" where unused ideas are featured.

It was just a proof of concept only... but then again it might be kind of cool to have the angle a little bit different than it was in Jedi. It was intended in my shot that the DS be a little behind the planet.

So a newer version of the andywans clip could be...
1 Star Destroyer over planet
2 Far DS shot with maybe the lower portion of the DS just slighty covered up by the planet. DS rises up a little bit while the star destroyer approaches.
3. Close up DS and Destroyer... yank the planet background plate.

I think this is a great idea for using planets. What about using our own moon or Mars or one of Mars' asteroid moons? Just shade them a different color so they wouldn't look familiar.
Author
Time
Think the idea is great however some changes I would make...........

1) Slow the movement of the planet / camera / death star / star destroyer down a bit

- it appears to race by quite quickly and shows a bit too much "sliding" of objects rather than giving the impression of static solid objects in space - (best way I can describe it)

2) Lose the star destroyers in the background if not all together, there wasnt much need for a fleet as they had a Death Star!?

- The fleet appeared on a large scale in ESB in a Battlestar Galactica type of manner IMHO, including them makes you wonder what happended to them when the rebels attack later in the film!? Wouldnt the Empire have used them as frontline of defense if they were hovering by the Death Star when the rebels xwing fighters appear??. If they are there for show then the planet needs to be something worth hovering over....see next point

3) Change the colour of the planet - blue implies Alderaan which we dont see for another 30 mins (roughly!)

- Could the planet be Coruscant in the background rather than hovering over a blue unidentified planet in orbit, would this give the destoyers a reason to be there.

Please dont take this as critisicm, I cant wait for your edit to be finished, its bringing back that feeling of waiting to watch Star Wars for the first time when I was 10!!!! So keep up the good work.

Good bits, love the addition of the music in the Generals meetings, dont mind the imperial march too much in the Death Star fly by....

I disagree, Darthbeej, the Death Star was not operational at that time. The fleet was there guarding it as it was being completed.
