EarthBound (Mother series)

I was just wondering if anybody here was familiar with this game series. EarthBound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) was released on the SNES in the mid '90s. It was a huge success in Japan but not so much over here, as RPGs were still a niche market, and this game was much different than most others in the genre. So, ten years later, with Mother 3 finally released in Japan to much fanfare, do you think it will ever come over here? And has anybody played the original Mother? I started playing it recently. It's the only ROM I've ever played, and that's only because it's the only way to play the game in English. But I got my hands on a bad ROM that goes to the copyright protection screen at a pivotal moment in the game, so now I have to start over. Damn.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Earth Bound was one of my favorite games from my childhood I remember renting it at Blockbuster. Heard somewhere it was going to be released in the U.K., if it is released there you can import it.

I already own it. It would just be nice if Mother 3 ever received a translation. But at this time, it doesn't seem like NOA is interested.

Also this.
Since the original, scrapped, Nintendo 64 version's announcement in 1996, many fans of the Mother series (and, furthermore, EarthBound) have been pleading for Mother 3 to be given a global release. A cult following has formed around the franchise, and many petitions and demands have been made towards Nintendo of America; however, there do not appear to be any plans to release Mother 3 in the United States. In response, a group of fans (Mother3.org) has been working on an unofficial English translation for the game. Recently, the Nintendo magazine of Europe ran an article about Mother 3, speculating about a possible European release under the name EarthBound 2, estimating its release to be December 2006 at the earlies

I remember waiting for Earthbound 64 do you?

Also I found this bit piece of trivia.
Shigesato Itoi has revealed in interviews that Giygas' dialogue during the final battle was inspired by a traumatic childhood experience wherein he mistakenly walked into an adult movie theatre playing a pornographic film and caught a glimpse of a rape scene.

Heh, yeah, I've scoured the Wikipedia page as well.

But, yeah, Mother 3 is essentially EarthBound 64 with the same story and everything. I think it turned out better this way. The Mother series is simply fit for a 2D cartoony perspective. I don't think it would have worked in 3D.

I love odd games. I'm also a big fan of Katamari Damacy.

Speaking of obscure games, was "Doshin the Giant" ever released? I remember hearing about it all over the place, but never being able to actually find it. Was it Japan-only?

I did some searching, and apparently it was released for Gamecube in '02, but only in PAL format. Never saw U.S. shores, unfortunately.
