But it was always meant to be called Episode IV, A New Hope because Lucas says so 30 years later? Other titles written endlessly, but never Episode IV, A New Hope, but it was always meant to be that way?

The truth is that I wrote the script for Star Wars, I had it in my head almost exactly as the final product turned out ... and it's been in my head that way since 1963.

I just never told anyone.

I thought about writing it down in 1972, but I forgot.

But trust me, ok?

I don't see any reason why we shouldn't trust him when it comes to things he says he was thinking inside his own head.

It's not like he -ever- came close to saying all that crap you just put into his mouth. All he said was the subtitle for Episode IV was something he thought about putting on before initial release, but ended up deciding not to until he re-released it in 79.

Well, here's a little speculation on my part. Empire of Dreams was made with a lot of help and insight from Lucasfilm and Lucas himself, right? Well, remember when they start talking about The Empire Strikes Back? They make a mention of the first movie by saying something like, "Star Wars, now dubbed Episode IV: A New Hope..." That makes it sound like it was something that was thought up later. And if it was not true, I'd think Lucasfilm would jump on that misrepresentation. Is that conclusive? No. That's just an observation I made. Hell, I'm not even convinced one way or the other that A New Hope did or didn't exist or when it came into existence in the first place.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Well it was dubbed with the new title after the initial release, I am not sure how that would indicate wether or not Lucas had thought about dubbing it that for the initial release.

According to him, he was thinking of doing that, but then they decided not to in case they didn't get to make it's sequels. Then as soon as it hit big, the first thing they decided was to implement the numbering system for ANH and it's now eventual sequels.

I personally am not convinced either way either. I admit there is a chance Lucas could be lying about this. My point is there really isn't anything to prove he is lying, so I give him the benefit of the doubt and refuse to accuse him of lying in this instance.

What about that other thread where it claims to be chapter 1 of 12?

It seems like what all of this boils down to is that while Lucas was producing his movie The Star Wars, it was called numerous subtitles, the most prominant being 'Saga 1'. The only evidence of the subtitle 'Episode IV: A New Hope' appeared after the production began of The Empire Strikes Back, which was being produced under the company LFL named 'Chapter II' productions.

If George had the idea of calling the first installment of his movies 'Episode IV: A New Hope' before 1979, it could be possible; however the evidence of the other names strongly suggest that George was still making up his mind on where the franchise should start and even how many chapters would be included. No doubt the success of the film helped in the decision. Maybe 'A New Hope' was an earlier idea, but it no doubt was his only one for the title.
