Hope Wanted: for Music for the Vader VS. Obi-Wan Rematch...

Hey Guys,

I am DESPERATELY attempting to make an edit of the fateful duel in ANH with all the bells and whistles thrown in: new lightsaber effects, a freshly polished-up Vader, some orange saber burns on the walls nearby, and last, but certainly not least…music.

For the life of me, I CANNOT find suitable music for this scene. Every edit I’ve seen has layed the track, “Anakin VS. Obi-Wan” from ROTS over this scene. I’m sorry, but it just doesn’t work. It’s far too quick and bombastic for this slow, seemingly meandering duel to jive with. My point is, I really, really need help to come up with music appropriate for this scene.

Now, I’m certain that there are people on this board who have knowledge of musical scores enough to answer my prayers. The track doesn’t even have to be from the Star Wars films (Frankly, I think I’ve exhausted any and all SW music that might fit into this scene). It could be from any other Williams-penned score, Shore, Howard or ANYTHING in between.

If you guys have any suggestions at all, please post them here. Your help would be much appreciated.

You could try taking "Anakin's Dark Deeds" and edit out the more intense parts, like chorus and such. It's pretty defensive, yet agressive and softly menacing.

You can go with some classical music. Heck, you can make Ben's death and Luke's reaction in slo-mo. How cool would that be? Take out all the sound effects, etc. and just go with a classical scoring.

watch the duel and think of what emotions you are trying to convey. Then listen to various music and see what makes you feel that way.

Whatever you do, I heartily recommend using the Force theme statement from "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan" for Ben's death. I'll have to look into the rest of it, though. Yes, definitely look at what mood and emotion you're going for.

Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

C'mon guys. If you haven't got serious suggestions don't clog the thread with purposefully ridiculous ones.

I can't think of any particular cues at the moment, but I do second that suggestion of checking War of the Worlds and Minority Report.

I've tried many different pieces for this sequence in my edit, including many other john williams scores, but nothing really seems to fit and really i want to keep the cues from williams' star wars recordings. What i am trying now is to mix various cues together so they fit better within each sequence. I haven't managed to find the best sections to add yet but i may eb able to give you some sort of idea in the next few days.

sorry i couldn't have been more help

Hmmm... As I think about it, it's really important to figure out what kind of emotion you're going for. Because you're not using Battle of the Heroes, and I assume no other truly action cue. So if you're not going for the action of it, then you need to figure out what kind of emotion you want before you go anywhere else.

I want something not bombastic at all, sort of melancholy and sad. But in that same thought, something not too slow, because, after all, it is a duel.

Just a crazy suggestion, how about Anakin's Dark Deeds. I played it in the background while I watched the duel and I think it fits pretty well.

How about the Emperor's Throne Room theme?

See, these all seem to memorable and "exciting" for this scene. I want something not many would be familiar with, something sad, but quick...but not too quick.

Wow...man, this is a tricky one. I think he's talking about the segment from 0:34 to about 2:14 on Anakin's Dark Deeds, and my guess is it would begin with the first saber clash. It would take some edits, but I can see it. There's definitely potential there, although, yes, it is one of the popular highlights of the ROTS score, and it may be a bit too big and action-y. I want to say there's something from ROTJ, but I'm at a loss for what it would be, and it would probably be too well-known, whatever it is. I'm not sure what you could use from the JW repertoire at this point. I'll try to look into some classical music, too.

The only music I could think of now would be "Dart Battle" from the Stargate Atlantis Soundtrack, but maybe it's still too fast for what you are searching for.

Over a year ago I also tried to give the lightsaber fight in ANH some music. My aim was to give it more energy, so I of course used "Battle of the Heroes" and "Anakin vs. Obi-Wan". In my opinion the result is okay, but I understand that your attitude that fast music doesn't match it. Just for fun, here's my edit:

Yeah, "Dart Battle" seems a bit too intense. Not neccesarily FAST, but just, too intense in its instrumentation. But I guess something a bit slower wouldn't hurt.

Any additional help from you guys would be nice.

The unused music for the Empire duel? It's really good and it needs a home!
