Doctor Who: The Trial of a Time Lord - Preservation

Heya!

I really loved making ‘Shada,’ that I have decided to set this project in motion. It wont be ready for about a month, but I thought I would mention it now, and find out who would like a copy.

First, some information about the episode(s):

The Trial of a Time Lord is the name used on screen for all fourteen episodes comprising the 23rd season of the original Doctor Who series. Despite the single name, however, it is actually the linking narrative that holds together the separate serials that comprise the season. The serials are unofficially known as: The Mysterious Planet, Mindwarp, Terror of the Vervoids and The Ultimate Foe. These are NOT official titles!

A synopsis:

The Sixth Doctor is taken out of time, his TARDIS transported to a mysterious space station where it is revealed that his people, the Time Lords, are putting him on trial once again. He is accused of “conduct unbecoming a Time Lord” and transgressing the First Law of Time. The Ultimate Court of Appeal is composed of the High Council of Time Lords, including the Inquisitor (fulfilling the role of adjudicator), and the Valeyard who has raised the charges against the Doctor. Using the evidence presented from the Matrix, which collects data from the various time zones in which a TARDIS lands and records it, three segments of evidence are shown to prove the Doctor’s guilt or otherwise: one from his past, one from his (near) present and one from his own future.

A note on the title:

Although each of the separate segments has been given a name by the fans, based upon working titles, the story is only ever credited on screen as The Trial of a Time Lord. This leads to the single story being 14 episodes long, making it the longest ever Doctor Who story.

I absolutley love this story, while other people I know, hate it. Full credit goes to Simon Holub, for his excellent art work.

The DVD is a single episode. All 14 episodes have been joined together, so that it runs for a total of 351 minutes. This is the version that I like the most, as it really should be viewed in this fashion. A cover preview is below:

me want. lol.

I'd take it as 4 dvds probably, as to split the series up like a regular "season boxset". Will have to get on that site and go lookie, it seems.

How about option 5?

OPTION 5

This option offers the a two disc Double-Layer DVD broken into Two Parts. All 14 episodes have still been joined together, so that it runs for a total of 351 minutes but with an intermission at the 3 hour point.

Just wondering on the status of this project. Can't wait to rewatch it again.

Has there been any restoration for Trial? I have all of the episodes on DVD and have put them into that lovely boxset cover done by Simon Holub but, I have them done from a PAL video source, while not brilliant (I post screenshots soon as I get the chance) are watchable and I would love to see near Restoration Team quality restoration for Trial seen as they probably won't be releasing Trial for a while.

Just a little update. I have limited it down to just two options now, to make it a little easier to make.

I AM restoring it, not just backing it up from VHS. This is why it is taking a little while longer. I have so far restored Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The other parts are still being made. Will keep you updated.

Can't wait then, so that means you have The Mysterious Planet and Mindwarp done, not exactly the best parts but you are doing them in order. Does omnibus mean just on one disc and seperately means 4 different discs?

This will eventually be released onto DVD. Probably in the next couple of years.

In what way is this project a fan edit?

Omnibus form in them all joined together on one disk. This is for Option 1. Option 2 is on 4 seperate disks. You can decide whether you want each set of episodes to be joined up, or seperatley.

This is a preservation, not a fan edit. I am doing this one in particular, as it is likely that the BBC shall not be releasing it for quite awhile, as it is a very long episode.

I would see this project more as a preservation than a fan edit. I've turned my Davison era Who episodes into DVDs (from the store bought VHS tapes that I own), but those are a preservation effort for myself and I'll gladly replace them with official DVDs when they are released. I still have to hunt down a few more of those Davison stories before my preservation efforts are complete. Off to eBay I go!

Right, just a little update to let you know that restoration on the two most degraded episodes (13 and 14) has gone amazingly well, leaving me with just four more parts to restore.

Is this restoring from VHS? Because I have DVD recordings from UKTVGOLD.

This is being restored from VHS. This will mean no station IDs.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am happy to tell you that restoration has been a complete success and the full 'Trial of a Time Lord,' is ready to be edited into omnibus form.

But, unfortunately, I also have bad news for you. It has been decided that this feature will now only be available via Option 1. This is to save on editing time. Apologies to anyone who wanted Option 2.

I shall update again when editing is complete.

Option 2 is much more preferable though.

Option one is fine with me...I just want it.

How are the other Who projects coming? Still waiting on when you're going to start sending Shada to the US. Can't wait...

I changed from the 8 disc case, as doing 8 discs per person will start to get a little too costly. One disk per person is simple.

Update

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have spent a very long working on this, but it is finally ready. I have burnt a copy off to DVD for myself. I loved it! I shall be making copies for people after Christmas, but requests are welcome now.

But before you do, let me inform of several things.

First, this did not come from a DVD. Therefore the video is not perfect. Also it has been compressed to fit on the DVD. Please be warned that it is not perfect quality, but is very watchable.

Fixer-

You already know that I'm wanting a copy, and I'll do a PIF as soon as I get it for anyone in the US who wants it (though my PIF might be dvdr only).

Email me when you want me to start my chain, and when the other Who I was wanting is ready to ship to the us (ec.rr.com email addy).

Slightly OT --

I started a project a while back to edit all the trial sequences out of "Mysterious Planet" and make it its own self-contained story. I was even planning on using Magic Bullet filters to improve the look of it.

Problem was: Even when I edited out the Trial scenes, it still wasn't a very good story, IMHO. So I never saw it to completion.

So it goes.

You may now return to business.

One of the problems I believe people dislike Trial of the Timelord is the budget cuts to the show, and the sudden departure of Peri and arrive of Mel, without an introduction.

Still it does seem like a great story, just mishandled.
