The voice of Qui-Gon

Author
Time
Hi all

A lot of us here (myself included) are trying in someway to edit Qui-Gon's voice into the Prequels. Some editors are even editing him 'saga editions' of the OT.

The Clone Wars animated series did an excellent scene of Qui-Gon and young (TPM) Anakin talking in front of the tree of Dagobah and I think such a scene should have been in the films.

So how do you think Qui-Gon's presence should be re-created in the prequels? Where should his voice of Qui-Gon be inserted and it work well?

The most obvious is to insert more dialogue after Anakin's Tusken slaughter in AOTC.

Should Qui-Gon try and communicate with Anakin in scenes in ROTS?

Thoughts? Ideas?

I defy anyone to do a better job patching together Qui-Gon's dialogue than ADM did in his EPIII edit.

Right after Vaderkin is fried by that inexplicable little flame spark on his pants that engulfs him completely and then inexplicably extinguishes on its own, I'd put quigon in there as a ghost who walks away and vanishes.

Interesting....

My bandwidth connection doesn't allow me to d/l the 4 gig files for this edit.

Can you explain what he did here?

He put in some Liam Neeson lines about (Yoda) not blaming himself for what happened. It was taken from that one Batman movie, I believe.

Adigitalman and I put three or four lines from Liam Neeson's other works into ROTS to at least *hint* at the major plot point Lucas skipped.

My edit, when cutting to the shot of Yoda meditating, voiceovers three Qui-Gon lines:

"Do you feel responsible? Forgive yourself... finding him was the will of the force."

My stance on revising fan edits.

Ahhh I see. Perhaps the line "Their death was not your fault" or something like that when Ducard is first training Bruce.

Is there an Xvid version of ADM edits (ie not a large file download) available?

What lines did you guys use and whereabouts in ROTS were they placed?

I edited my post above with the answer, but I'd have to check again to see exactly what ADM did differently. I think his was slightly different, since we did this independantly. (Although we conversed about it together.)

I know ADM used "Are you ready to begin?" during the deleted Yoda pod scene. Personally, I found it rather distracting considering it was basically used as Batman Begin's tagline.

I think he also added lines to the part where we see Yoda meditating aboard the Tantive IV (or wherever he was at the end)

ADM actually sourced as much of Qui-Gon's dialogue as he could from the original ROTS script.

Once I buy the boxed set next year I'll have to check out some of the PT edits. Good thing he didn't take any sound bits from Darkman.

"The pink elephant if you please." Qui-gon

"What say you?" Yoda

The one I'm looking forward to most is trooperman's Shroud of the dark side. It really looks like it'll clean up AotC, not only making it watchable, but good too.

Indeed. If I'd wanted to put in just any old line from Liam's body of work, I'd have inserted "We're going to have sex in every room, including yours" or maybe "It's mine, ain't it? I can take a piss on the back yard if I want to." (For anybody wanting to scour Liam's body of work for more lines, don't waste your time with Suspect. )

But instead I did try to actually reconstruct Lucas' plot point as best as possible. The result resonates though Ben and Yoda's deaths, all the way to the end of ROTJ. If a Jedi cannot forgive oneself for what he sees as his greatest mistakes, he cannot become one with the Force and still retain his consciousness. But if you can forgive yourself in spite of the atrocities of your past (Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin all had them) then you may live on in the afterlife.

The whole tone becomes about forgiveness. And that is a POWERFUL message for any story.

Liam Neeson cracks me up. He can be so volatile towards Star Wars, but when you look at his resumé he's had some shockers in the past... that awful Haunting remake, and Darkman?? Come on!!!

ADM that really is cool and makes complete sense in terms of explaining the whole force ghost thing. Its one I've never thought of before actually, even after reading the Episode III novel. What a shame this wasn't included in the original film.

Please forgive my constant badgering, but what is the dialogue you used in these scenes? Was it only Sith that you added Liam Neeson to or Clones too? I'd love it if you or somebody who has a copy of your edit(s), could post the dialogue as it appears in your edits (as if it was a script/screenplay sort of thing).

I'm not interested in plagurising your work (as I have my own ideas already completeled) but definitely keen to get a few new ideas flowing.

I'd love to d/l a copy of your edit but unfortunately the files are too big for my bandwidth.

I liked The Haunting....tho I haven't seen it since I was maybe 13. I thnk i'll give it another go now...no matter what people say about it these days.

Not on topic...my bad.

It never even crossed my mind that during these edits people would use dialogue from the actor's other roles. I guess I wouldn't be so good at this, tho I know I will try it on some movie someday.

I....can't think of anyone that sounds like him. The Clone Wars guy sounded slightly like him and could pass for him in an edit if need be. Then again, my memory of those mostly lame cartoons might be off.

I wish GL had just kept his stuff in ROTS...it would have been a nod to the OT (like he seemed prone to doing thru the whole PT) by having a Jedi return to the living in ghost form at the end of the trilogy.

Hey look, a bear!

I don't know that a few voice-over sentences at the end of Revenge would have done the idea justice. About extra Qui-gon, though, I would love to somehow work his speech from that Phantom commercial ("it will be a hard life...") into episode 2. Anakin could "remember" it in some reflective moment after his mother's death.

I've managed to piece together a relatively decent piece of Qui-Gon talking from the Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds video game.

Having it actually have a larger/saga meaning ala what ADigitalMan has done is what I'm trying to ultimately achieve.

Hopefully someone can come through with the actual dialogue used in his edit so I can get some inspiration!

Qui-Gon can be heard in two scenes in ADM's RotS:

INT. POLIS MASSA-OBSERVATION DOME-NIGHT

On the isolated asteroid of Polis Massa, YODA meditates.
QUI-GON: (V.O.) Do you feel responsible? Forgive yourself. If you let it, it will destroy you, as it almost did me.

AND

EXT. DAGOBAH-DAY

A small escape pod hurls toward the swamp planet and disappears in the mist.
QUI-GON: (V.O.) Are you ready to begin?
YODA: (O.S.) Yes. Will he finish what he begins?
QUI-GON: (V.O.) Finding him was the will of the Force, I have no doubt of that.
The pod has landed, and YODA descends the ramp, surveying the unfamiliar terrain.
QUI-GON: (V.O.) Master, may the Force be with you.

One other bit ... as Yoda falls to the Senate floor amid Palpatines cackling, he lands hard. Suddenly, through the Force, he hears the voice of Qui-Gon advising him that he has a greater part to play than this futile battle.

Qui-Gon (V.O.): My master, you must live.

I tried desperately to have Qui-Gon say "Run, Yoda. Run." Alas, the examples of "run" that I came up with just didn't work out.

But it explains why Yoda just stopped fighting and high-tailed it out of there.

Edit: There was another line I cobbled together that was really cool, but it just sounded too piecemeal in the end"
"Sith Lords Will Not Share Your Compassion. If you let it, it will destroy you, as it almost did me."

VERY cool in concept, even closer to the script, but ultimately too funky audio-wise to pull off. A few on the board actually heard my rough drafts on these. I'm sure I still have them on my hard drive isolated from the mix.
