If you're talking about a Serenity edit, as mentioned above for various reasons one has neither been finished nor posted. It would still be incomplete as there was several deleted scenes that weren't on the DVD, as those of us who saw advance screenings in 2005 will attest. Check out the Serenity: The Visual Companion book to see these scenes in script form.

I just bought it last week. I had not caught on to it when it came out or was on TV. Well, just know that when you get it done, I will be eagerly awaiting for it.

I wrote out an outline using the existing film, deleted scenes (US & Oz), some outtakes, and possibly a couple of exterior shots from the TV series. Sadly, my lack of knowledge on how to edit the film after ripping the VOBs & remixing the 2.0 audio to match the existing 5.1 is what is stopping me. The goal was to end up fleshing out the plot better and peppering back in some humour which the TV show fans enjoyed.

It also sounds like this edit will have to utilize PAL and NTSC source (as well as anamorphic/non-anamorphic material). That can start to get pain-in-the-assy for a n00b.

But then again my first true edit was the Matrix and I can't imagine a deeper end to jump into.

I always wondered why Joss killed two leads in what most considered the start of a new franchise. I considered doing an edit with TV material to have a slightly different ending. But I'm a sucker for a happy ending as most of you know.

Could you not just make the edit in PAL and convert it to NTSC later?

I'd be very disappointed if a Serenity edit used scenes from Firefly given the leap in production design etc between the two, but I guess that's the editor's decision. I really want to see a re-assembly of the version I saw in London on February 2005 - there were numerous little things that were cut for either keeping a PG-13 or to stop from boring newbies to the 'Verse, but that would have made it extra-sweet for established Browncoats. I'll try to find a proper list off the Serenity forum archives (I know there is one), but some of the most memorable were:

- Brief scene where the Operative is about to torture Minty and Fango.
- A longer shot of Kaylee crying over the dead child at the massacre.
- Mal and Inara nearly kissing after seeing the video message about the Reavers.
- There was a much more explicit low-angle shot of the Operative's sword being run through Mal (in the film it happens off-camera). Presumably cut for the PG-13, though it may have been because some though it would be "silly" that Mal would carry on after it. Maybe - I just thought it made him all the more hardcore :-D
- Fireworks in the funeral scene (hence why they're putting notes on a bloody rocket!!!)
- When Mal enters the cockpit in the final scene, he has a little play with Wash's dinosaurs and flicks the three switches before his scene with Wash.

Hmm, i don't have my copy with me but i don't recall any deleted scenes i thought really would do well reinserted. Unless of course there are some great shots not in the R4 [oz] package. If i were to suggest any change i guess it would be 'don't kill wash' - althought that could conflict with any sequels that may come out.

I guess you/we do have the advantage of the tv show to source scenes and shots from. I have to say i'm interested but overall i'm very happy with the movie just the way it is. at a time when no new films out actually satisfied me i took a gamble on serenity and loved it.

For him it was and is probably the end of a franchise .... also, Joss Whedon can be very mean to his characters. Cordelia, Anya, and Tara, anyone?

But Joss has also stated that the two characters would be brought back (how? dunno) for the next film if it was produced.

Maybe a prequel?
The comic book that covers that gap between the series and movie could make a good film.

yes it would. I had also debated adding an optional opening video primer which would sum up some of what has happened inbetween the TV series and the movie possibly using the comic and other footage. But this is all mute, for me at least, until class stops giving me so much work every day so I can try to learn editing.

He responds in kind to the way he's treated. Seth Green anyone?

Don't hold your breath - I'd be surprised if this extended beyond brief flashbacks or River "seeing" them in visions a la the beginning of "Objects In Space".

Way I heard it, Cordelia's death was revenge on Charisma for getting pregnant.

Joss Whedon = mean, folks. I don't care if your actors are the devil incarnate, you should treat your characters with love the way your audience does. They're heroes and deserve to go out like heroes rather than punks .... and preferably not die suddenly and stupidly. And preferably not die at all.

Honestly, Joss. Tsk tsk.

I suggest that any Serenity reedit should be retitled "Cows... in... Space!"

(Actually, an edit of Firefly footage with the audio from the opening to Pigs in Space would be funny. With film of some actual pigs to start off with.)

Another thing. Watch "Jaynestown," where Jayne is hailed as a hero. Wash asks why they can't visit the crappy planet where HE's a folk hero.

Now watch the Strangers With Candy episode "The Blank Stare" (season 2 disc 2 I think) .... a two-parter with Alan Tudyck as - a cult leader.

Yep.

Yeeeep.

Lost chapter in Wash's life there folks.

Also, if enough fans got together and chipped in money, do you think enough $ could be raised to kidnap Eliza Dushku, James Marsters and Tony Head and force them to enact scenes from some sort of spinoff show for our own twisted pleasure?

Actors kidnapped by fans, forced to star in show. Standoff with police continues, day 15. Actors develop Stockholm syndrome, identifying with their captors - "I really like the direction my character is heading" .... "This is sick but not as bad as being on UPN" ... etc.

There is talk (and a push by TV Guide scribe Michael Ausiello) for a TV movie for Spike. Everyone seems interested.
Joss just needs to finish screwing around with Wonder Woman and he'll be free to do it.

I was just combining the proposed Spike movie, the Ripper spinoff and the Faith spinoff into one. =) A la Angel, really ....

Oh, I get it now. Sorry.
It's a good point though; Joss talks a lot, but usually ends up leaving us hanging.

Before Willow went gay, Seth had complained to Joss about his character not having much to do. Joss was going to give him more, but didn't get the chance since Seth just decided to take off. So Seth goes off to find a way to keep from going all wolfy (read: leaves the show for a while). Then, Seth decided he wanted to be back on the show for a few episodes. So Joss brought Seth back ("I found the cure!"), but made Willow gay so she wouldn't want him. That, in turn, made Seth's character obsolete (he now gets angry when he smells Tara on Willow).

Granted, most of this is on the commentary (I think) of the Buffy DVDs and I don't have Seth's side to compare against, so I have no idea if this is how it really went down. If you watch the show with a careful eye though, it all kind of fits. Joss might be willing to kill you off on a project, but he'll also remember you and call you up the next time he needs you. Look at FireFly. Gina Torres and Mel were both on shows of his (Gina was on Angel, Mel was in the finale of Buffy).

I don't know much about the Cordelia thing other than that whatever she did, it really screwed up the story and they just had to write her out. Whatever else happened probably wasn't helped by WB pulling the rug out from under them. Everywhere I read and heard, their ratings were fine, WB just didn't want the show anymore. I fully expected Smallville to get the axe next with the way things were going. It's the only show left on "The CW" that isn't "teen angst drama".

As for Joss talking a lot, that's probably dead on. I think the problem is that he has a lot of ideas and wants to do a lot of things all at once, but there just isn't enough time. It took him a year just to get the last issue of Fray out simply because he had too many other things going on (Buffy, Angel, and one other I can't remember). It wasn't really until toward the end of Buffy that Fray finally came out. It seems like he can really only handle 1 or 2 projects at a time. As soon as you add a 3rd project (tv show, comic, movie script, etc, etc) things start either getting delayed or turn crappy.

HI. Anyway to get an extended edition of Serenity around here? I noticed this thread talks about it and stuff...

Well?
I love Batman.

From TheDigitalBits.com:

We have a small update on Universal's Serenity: Collector's Edition (due 8/21): Look for a 2-disc set with 60 minutes of all-new bonus material, including never-before-seen footage and collectible packaging.

I think that fan edit is looking more promising now...

Potentially yes, unless the "new footage" is just the extras from the Australian set recycled all over again. But let's hope not!!! I'm crossing all my fingers and toes hoping for the rest of the deleted scenes
