Personally, I think that while he may have been slagging off the fans for a while, his behaviour in some recent interviews shows to me that there is at least some slim hope of him realizing how much the vocal fans mean to the franchise. He may not be totally committed to restoring the original trilogy, but I believe that he understands where the fans are coming from. It should have been obvious to him from the first time fan edits of Episode I started showing up.
