Idea: Preserving STAR TREK - a preservation project?

 (Edited)

This is Star Trek’s 40th Anniversary year. All the movies and TV series will be out by the end of the year thanks to the release of the Animated Series. There is, however, a load of games and stuff with footage of the cast back in character which are rare.

On trekmovie.com, there were commericals for PowerGen and DirecTV. Only the latter is downloadable. I’m asking if anyone would be intersted in doing a Trek Preservation project? There are games and stuff like this which could be ‘archived’ and even fanedited.

The live action ones include:
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - A Klingon Challenge interactive video board game (1995)
STAR TREK: Borg (1996) - PC Interactive Movie - on youtube but would be good to have a dvd
STAR TREK: Klingon (1996) - PC Interactive movie
STAR TREK: Starfleet Academy (1997) - PC Game with live-action footage of the Shat, Takei and Koenig
Powergen Commercial (c. 1996) - With Shatner and Doohan
DirecTV commercial (2006) - The Shat appears with his face cut into a TUC video

There are loads of animated spoofs - Futurama, the Simpsons, family etc… who’s with me!? Where do we start?

I have a fan made MST3K-d version of Star Trek V on DVD that also has a spoof commercial of some sort. Gotta watch it again to see what it was.

I've been wanting to bring this up for ages. Including a couple of things that I want for my own edits, actually. But I haven't had time to get much done, I was going to do a couple of things before I brought it up.

There's so much out there to preserve, too! There are various utils that supposedly snag videos off of Youtube, for example, without recording and converting them (without recompression loss). But the one I that I've tried didn't work.

I don't have any knowledge about game ripping, tho'. Let's not forget the actor's voices in games, either. I finally got the enhanced versions of the 25th Anniversary game, the sound file converter claimed it wasn't that company's weird format - even tho' the format is listed in the file header. Sounds awful on my Win98 machine, I'm sure it sounds better in Dos (haven't tried yet), but I don't know how to capture it digitally, from Dos, without recording it off the soundcard. (Yes, this subject has come up before, for other games, without an answer).

I've heard of that STV MST3K, but haven't found it. I've got all kinds of crap on VHS (usually stumbled on it when I was at low speed), and I've been meaning to get a time base corrector. But I haven't had the hdd room to capture any of it. All of it is snowy & staticy, of course, despite paying all that money for cable.

There's leaked deleted scenes that are basically unwatchable & un-listenable. I got some that were leaked for Generations (and left off of the dvd extras - of course the ones in the extras have timecodes and copywrite notices destroying them, and they are letterboxed). A pay-cable channel (apparently Showtime) used to run an ad with some deleted scenes from Wrath of Khan - also not in the DVD extras - one guy did a cap from his horrible tape, then compressed it down to nothing---

There's long-OOP LPs, unique LDs, various sources of bloopers, Electronic Press Kits... quite a list, when you think about it. Those Bonus Discs (Best Buy, perhaps Walmart). Scripts! Those scripts that they don't seem to sell copies of anymore. (I got burned by a guy who was supposedly selling his spare scripts. I tried to buy unused Phase II scripts, and some early versions). There's a need to preserve the original TOS series mono audio. The DVDs added inappropriate sound effects to the bridge hum. The TOS LDs didn't have a digital audio track - but the expensive Japanese sets did... There's the temporarily-changed song in City on the Edge of Forever. The open-matte version of the ST6 movie - only on LD.

I'll do whatever I can, as I get time (if?), and I'll probably go into more detail, if RealLife ever lightens up on me. There's stuff I might send off to people with skills and equipement, if I don't get said skills and equipment myself...

Edit: Retraction: The following turns out to be wrong:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Heck, there used to be a debate about whether Kelsey Grammer's voice was in First Contact, as the captain of the Bozeman - until a guy pointed out that none of the captians replied. But I distinctly remembered hearing a reply in the theater--- wasn't on the DVD--- but its on the HD version! Muuuwahahahahaaaa!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went back to clip the audio--- and it wasn't there... I don't get it... There is a Grammer-live voice earlier, aknowledging when the Defiant and Bozeman are ordered to fall back to position 3, but that's audible on the DVD. I've can't think of any other version it could've been on. I thought that VLC was playing tricks, so I ripped the audio to 6 wav files - nothing. PowerDvd started playing the DVD from the point I had been comparing to the HD... so I know I didn't swap places with a counterpart from a different timeline...

Maybe Paramont broke in and replaced the disc?

Anyway, I don't want to be the source of misinformation. So it's better to retract it than delete it.

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

is anyone going to capture any of the new remastered episodes of TOS?

I think the dvd release is too close to this to consider doing a preservation according to this sites rules I guess.

At 2:00 a.m. were I live tonight they are showing the new cgi version of city on the edge of forever.

I have the Starfleet Academy disks and would be happy to contribute them if someone could tell me how to rip the files.

Hey everyone,

A few years back I did a DVD-ROM conversion of the STAR TREK: Borg game. It included a new installer with the patch integrated and some tweaks to the game to function fully on NT based systems (2000, XP, etc). Not switching discs was of course a big bonus as well. If it would classify as a preservation I would gladly integrate STAR TREK: Klingon into the disc as well and make similar changes as I did with Borg. Anyone here have the game and/or interested in this?

For whomever would like to put together a preservation of just the video I'd gladly send them all the video for borg. There is around 96 minutes of story footage total, plus another 36 minutes of information to help you along the way in the game. Since there is only one 100% correct way of getting through the game, it could just be edited together to form one "episode". You of course lose the whole choose your adventure aspect of the game doing this but for those that would just end up annoyed by the trial & error and minor puzzles, this would be better anyway.

I have a VHS copy of a blopper reel. I also had a Star Trek IV making of and footage of Treks 25th annaversary, but those were lost when I loned them to a friend (the tape there got blanked out, it's a miracle the bloopers survived).

I wouldn't think so, the remastered episodes are syndicated versions which are cut, and therefore a different edit than the DVD releases

Hey guys, don't forget the version of The City on the Edge of Forever with different sound effects. Also can't forget that early remastered version of The Doomsday Machine that's up on YouTube.

I doubt it's allowed since a Blu-ray or DVD release isn't too unlikely. I think the Star Trek Special Edition aired on Sci-Fi is worth preserving though.

I'm mostly interested in preserving concept art and scripts of Phase II though.

Including the original cut of the first movie? Is a new release being planned?

Well a DVD of the TOS blooper reels has been upped on Demonoid. I'm not sure of the quality but it's probably better than the stuff on YouTube.

I think we should take another stab at restoring the original pilot version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It's weird to see the episode title with that thingy's blinking noise but without actually seeing it blinking.

I don't think i'd be willing to get involved in a project like this but I love the idea. There will be an audience for this stuff...

What was the computer game that had Christopher Plummer reprise his role as Chang? something to do with Klingons. I never played it or saw it in action but the trailer was great. I think David Warner might have been in it too. Klingon academy?...

I recently got a copy of the STV MST3K fanedition (dunno how else to label it since it's a fanmade MST3K) from MarioXB, and he's in the process of taking the Mike Nelson audio commentary for ti and applying it to the dvd he sent me (ala his Backstroke of the West dvd-convertor thingie). Anyone who wants copies of the original and the re-do from mario, lemme know.

I'm interested in the commentary/anecdotes that were part of the "SciFi Channel Special Edition" airings of TOS. They were shown in the 90's iirc, I enjoyed watching these. Perhaps they've already been preserved somewhere?

I know of a guy who sells them on a site, but he probalbly would not share them for free for preservation.

It's probalbly against site rules to link to the site.

What I can tell you is it's only the shatner ones, he does not have the repeats with the nimoy comments.

He created his own menus and called his set :Star Trek Insights I think it is five dvds single layer.

He is also charging $25.00 for the set.

If you want the name of the site to search for it on send me a private message, then I will go ahead and delete this post.

response to another post quote" Including the original cut of the first movie? Is a new release being planned?"

probalbly it will never be released ever again considering the late director robert wise considered that cut unfinished. I also highly doubt you will ever see the theatrical editions for star trek II ever offered on HD either or dvd again. Also the theatrical cut of star trek VI was never released on home video.

The scenes from both the television cut and the theatrical cut of star trek the motion picture are on the second disc but not included in the main feature of the dvd. they are in widescreen but I am not sure if they are anamorphic also the quality is not the same as the remaster on disc one of the official dvd. someone on these boards awhile back said they had shown the theatrical cut on HD.net, but no one said they had captured it.

It is possible that if fans demanded it that all versions and cuts of the original star trek films could be made available considering they are doing a ultimate box set for HD- DVD which according to reports will have the largest amount of bonus material ever offered, even more than the series of two disc sets released on dvd.

Also some fans on these boards have suggested someone recomping the scenes from disc two back into the main feature on star trek the motion picture and removing and replacing the redone shots. a classic edition if you will.

I think this is a great idea.

I am already working on preserving footage from the 'Star Trek Adventure' at Universal in the early 90s.

I also have a version of the Powergen ad which I didn't get from Youtube. But I'm still on the lookout for a higher quality copy.

If anyone has any of the cut scenes from the computer/board games on DVD, they are willing to share with me, I hope people will get in touch.

Thanks for the headsup. I wonder if it's the same as the one I have.

Anyone know if there's any way to find the footage I lost. Someone must've gotten ahold of the footage as well. It would remove a long standing regret. I can still see the footage in my mind's eye to this day. Especially the giant Enterprise cake.

While I recorded the Sci-fi channel editions, only the intros are preservable. The rest is on DVD. I found out recording a few episode I missed on the first run that the second run, as hosted by Nimoy instead of Shatner, contained different info. Had I known, I would've taped those as well.

The 30th Anniversary Special deserves preservation as well, although I don't think it was ever released on home video like the 25th. And don't forget what was basically the 35th Anniversary Special, Jason Alexander's "Ultimate Trek: Star Trek's Greatest Moments." It's a shame that this year being the 40th Anniversary, there is no such celebration to speak of.

Yeah, the 40th sucks. We lose Scotty and recently Jane Wyatt (Spock's mother Amanda), and all we get in return is a poorly done "enhanced version" that's becoming more and more like Georgies by the episode.

I actually like what they're doing with TOS Remastered. The difference here (from Star Wars) is that CBS is not supressing the original versions, as they have been released on DVD and are currently airing on 2 TV stations. If anything, I wish they'd go further with their alterations to bring TOS closer in line with the rest of Trek. We'll always have both versions, so what's the harm in seeing what all can be done?

I'm not familiar with the ST IV one, but is TNG's "Totally Naked"? I saw it on Youtube and found it pretty amusing, but it was in really bad quality. What's yours look like?
