well, for the last few years it seems those of us who still have decent taste in entertainment have been asking what the crap happened to the film industry... where are the "Casablancas" and "Seven Samurais" of today? Why does hollywood give us nothing but mindless garbage? Here, we've found our answer.....

Horse shit. Pure horse shit.

Casablanca - 1942.

Other films released in 1942 - Sabotage Squad, Secrets of a Co-Ed, The Night Before the Divorce, Not a Ladies' Man, Panama Hattie, Happy Circus Days...remember those? Me neither.

Seven Samurai - 1954

Other films released in 1954 - She Couldn't Say No, Fangs of the Wild, Tooting Tooters...classics all!

Films released in 2006 - The Departed, Akeelah and the Bee, The Black Dahlia, Flags of Our Fathers, Hollywoodland, The Illusionist, Monster House, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Superman Returns...and yeah, for every one of those there's a Dungeon Siege or You Me and Dupree...

My point is, Hollywood has always made shit but you only remember the bad ones in your lifetime. Ever since the first frame of film ran through a camera there's been White Chicks or Poseidon Adventure.

But we love them because every now and then they get it right, and 2006 is no exception.

I would just like to point out that Seven Samurai can in no way be claimed for Hollywood.

At this point I would just like to air a particular gripe of mine:

STOP SAYING "THE FILM INDUSTRY" WHEN YOU ONLY MEAN FUCKING HOLLYWOOD!!!!!

Thank you.
Don't you call me a mindless philosopher...!

geez, i was making a quick joke at that stupid woman's expense.... didn't expect so much backlash. yes, i'll concede that Seven Samurai is clearly not from hollywood, but i was just trying to think of a couple of good movies off the top of my head.

ok... flag of our fathers isn't even out yet.... POTC2 sucked, Superman Returns was decent, but not great. haven't seen the others, so i won't comment on them. but none of the ones you mentioned that i did see come close to some of the classic films like Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, To Catch a Thief, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Lawrence of Arabia, Roman Holiday etc.

sorry to ruffle so many feathers.

Didn't ruffle my feathers, man. I'm just pointing out that there has always been bad movies, no one remembers them.

Hopefully the prequels will be that way.

No doubt there, man....but there was always some really awesome movies coming out that made the bad ones bearable. Not sure we have the good films these days to offset the bad ones.

Certainly The Departed, Flags Of Our Fathers are examples of great films....but they are by no means really great. There's always really awesome films and then great films released during the year along with all the crap. We don't get really awesome films anymore and we barely get great films.....I'd say we get just under great films along with all the crap.

That make any sense?

I agree that movies REALLY stink right now compared to the past (especially 50's-60's). Where are the Alfred Hitchcocks, John Fords, and classic Steven Spielbergs?

I'm a teenager and I love film (especially the framing, the way music is used, suspense, overall style, and so on). I would become a movie director and try to start making great movies again if I thought it was possible. But from what I've read, movies are a really political thing and you can't just walk in, get complete creative control, and make a classic. If I could actually do that, then I'd go into film in a heartbeat.

Everything's just so smooth and slick and stupid now, with very few exceptions. Everything seems just so disengenous, in my opinion. Movie music also really stinks now compared to before. Possibly because more and more composers are just plugging away at a synthesizer in real time, and not even necessarily writing down their music. (I know J. Williams, Howard Shore, and others are not like this, but still..).

A lot of it is probably that people have changed. How successful would "To Catch a Thief" or "Vertigo" be if they were released today? Not very. And yet they're classics.

Maybe part of it is that what a lot of people find funny in movies today... I don't find funny. He said the F word three times in a row! Ha ha! Ha! Hmm...

Sorry, just had to add one more thought. Why does everything in modern movies have to be explained to death? There's a loss of innocence. I didn't need to know about the Grinch's childhood trauma, for instance. He was the Grinch! He's a bad guy! No explanation necessary.

I really wish that I could go into movies, because I have so many ideas- it keeps me awake at night, stringing all the shots together in my head. But directing isn't considered a "real" job, like an engineer or a doctor. Oh well....

Sadly, they didn't direct that movie.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

With Larry pulling a "Wendy Carlos" and doing a sex change, and Andy pretty much not doing anything at all anymore, even though there are so many rumors about future projects, I strongly belive that Bounds and Matrix trilogy are pretty much the only records of the bro... siblings skills at movie directing and/or writting. Besides, I might be wrong, but V for Vendetta's final script was not penned by the two.
