Lucas on Colbert

Did anyone get a chance to watch the Colbert Report last night? Lucas was on, and he even "submitted" an entry to the green screen challenge. I'm surprised that no one has posted on this yet... Hmm..

Anyway, I wasn't all that impressed with Lucas. At first it started to look cool, but then Jar Jar showed up. I thought that Colbert would cut him in half and have the audiance cheer, but he just kept on talking, and then Colbert started to mockingly talk like him...but it wasn't funny. Even something as simple as a green screen challenge, Lucas still manages to fuck it up. I'm glad the lost though. It would have sucked royally if Colbert actual made him the winner.

I did giggle at the end though when he and Colbert battled it out with lightsabers.

Oh, this must be why some friends emailed me saying I MUST watch Colbert tonight. Whew, glad it's linked here, but I won't be able to watch till after work this evening.

I guess we can now officially say... Lucas goes for the balls.

I thought it was great. Lucas said he owned almost all the Star Wars movies, but wasn't too sure about Episode I.

Then when Jar-Jar showed up the audience cheered.

Same thing happened at Celebration II when Anthony Daniels asked the crowd if they really hated Jar-Jar and a few people cheered, then he asked who really really loved Jar-Jar and just about everyone burst into applause.

It's nice to see that most people really don't hate Jar-Jar, and that quite a few of us love him.

That's because most of the people who go to those "Celebration" shindigs have Lucas' dick in their mouths. Face it man, normal people just don't like Jar Jar. That's why he showed up on the Colbert Report in the first place, he's a punchline.

To me it's the people who can't stand him that's the punchline.

But yeah die hard fans will appreciate Jar-Jar more than others.

'Kay, but I hope you realize that means you think that 95% of the Star Wars fan community and most of the general movie viewing public are "punchlines". To imply that there was not an unprecendented amount of backlash from fans and the general public in regards to Jar Jar is revisionist history.

You mean die-hard LUCAS fans will appreciate him more. Die-hard STAR WARS fans are the most vocal in expressing their distaste for Jar Jar's antics.

There really aren't that many people who hate Jar-Jar.

I'm not revising anything.

You may have noticed the round of applause Jar-Jar got from Colbert's audience.

Just shut the fuck up Go-Mer. It's true. Most people hate Jar Jar. A fair share of telivision shows have parodied him, he's been the victim of numerous parodies and insults against Lucas, many from casual fans of Star Wars, and was one of the main complaints about Episode one besides the fact it had a horrible plot. It's only the people who are gay for George Lucas and would probably pay to watch the man take a shit who love Jar Jar. So get Lucas' dick out of your mouth and join the real world.

I just wanted to point out that there's three people in this thread actually engaged in an arguement about the number of people who dislike Jar Jar Binks. Just so we're clear on that point.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

BECAUSE HE'S A PUNCHLINE.

And take off your fucking neck-fat blinders, OF COURSE there are many people who hate Jar Jar. I don't care if you like him or not, but you're a liar if you claim he wasn't and isn't almost universally despised. The Ewoks look like fucking Shaft in comparison.

I don't know I thought it sounded like the audience was pretty happy to see Jar-Jar.

But maybe I'm projecting or something.

Ummm...yeah there are THAT many people who hate him. Do you know how many college film courses he has been worked into as an example of modern racist caricature? I was in a graduate film studies course at the time of TPM and that was when I first realized how nearly universally reviled the character was. I hated him because he just flat out sucked in any capacity in the "film" known as TPM. But, the first time I truly realized how hated he was was in that lecture hall.

The blind Lucas sheep who follow behind their portly shepherd hoping to catch his dangling, flacid sac in their gaping mouths...his army of brainwashed apologists constantly yammering on about the wonder of the PT like a bunch of converts preaching the tenets of scientology...their the ones who like the character, and Jake Lloyd as Anakin, and the "emotionally heart breaking love scenes" of the PT. Crack kills, man.

That was a little rude .

The Ewoks I'll admit to liking. There I'll back you up. With Jar-Jar, you're on your own.

A little rude, was it? Well, when someone is saying that most of the world loves Jar Jar, I think I'm entitled to say things FAR worse than what I said. I mean, you have to be pretty far from reality to make a statement saying only a few hate Jar Jar.

Now it's up to FIVE people who are actually arguing about the number of people who hate Jar Jar Binks.

People. Please. Go read a book.

Come on, guys. It was all in good fun. Hell, Jar Jar's only in the thing because Colbert mentioned him in the original segment.

There's no reason to get so bent out of shape over a character whose limelight ended nearly 8 years ago.

I'm sure there are people who love Jar Jar. They were all probably toddlers when they saw Episode I though. He was like the new Barney without trying to shove preschool lessons down their throats.

I didn't say most of the world loved Jar-Jar, I said there weren't really all that many that actually hated him.

Lucas conducted exit polls around the release of TPM and he found that Jar-Jar was actually a hit with the target audience (children) and a lot of women loved him as well. He says that most of the complaint came from 30 somethings on the Internet.

He says there is always a group of people who don't like comedic sidekicks. There were some fans who thought the droids were horrible in ANH, some fans who couldn't take Yoda seriously because he was a muppet, some fans who didn't like the ewoks, now there are some fans who couldn't stand Jar-Jar.

But I would say there are far more people who think he's not all that bad, even if they think he could have been better.

I'm 35 and I -love- Jar-Jar.

So what have we learned:

1. In late '06 and billions of $ later, Lucas still prefers to wear K-mart jeans and flannel shirts.

2. They spend the time and money to make that crappy segment, but they wouldn't spend the time/money on an anamorphic OUT release for 09/12.

Yep, this is def. not a sane man by any stretch of the imagination.

Sure, everyone "loved" (and I use that word in quotations) TPM and Jar-Jar when it came out. However, people started wising up. Go on any movie review site. Hell, check out the IMDB's entry on the film. All sorts of people slam Jar-Jar on there, regardless of whether they liked the movie or not. Then, Jar-Jar might have been funny, but now he's on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. He's a joke.

I remember a group of fans on TFN who were predicting they would hate Jar-Jar as soon as they heard his voice clip.

"Monstairs out dere, leakin in here, all sinkin an no power? When a yousa tinkin weesa in trubba?"

I remember opening night getting back to the forum to find a bunch of people slamming him right away.

The die hard Star Wars fans never needed a "wising up" period, and I don't think the people who loved him have "wised up" either.

I know I sure haven't.
