Calling all HALLOWEEN fans... — Page 2

I don't like slasher movies. And they always show a bunch around Halloween when they actually have NO relation to Halloween whatsoever. They are movies about murderers, big whoopty-freaking-DO! I've seen Halloween a long time ago, and was bored. Is it supposed to take place on or around Halloween? I can't even remember.

Black Christmas came before Halloween.

I have found 2 strange films that IMO are cool Halloween movies:

1. Xtro (note: one of the stars of this film is a Bond Girl!! and she's seen in her Birthday Sute! Clue:she was "Ta'ra" in an 80's show)

2 The Manitou

I didnt like Xtro, I have it on DVD and thought it was pretty crappy, the only redeeming factors for me in the film is the gorey bits of which there are a few and Maryam D' Abo (of The Living Daylights) other than that I hated it and think it is one of worst Horror films ive seen. There are plenty of Horror films being shown on satelite TV here all the time now because of Halloween coming up, I watched Exorcist 3 last night though it isnt really gorey it is a really good and IMO underated Horror film.

I agree, though some of the plot points like Fr. Carras being alive bug.

If you live in the US, and are a fan of John Carpenter's Halloween... you are lucky!

Am I the only one who thinks that that film is mind-bogglingly overrated trash without any redeeming value at all whatsoever?

Aren't pretty much all slasher films overrated trash without any redeeming value at all whatsoever?
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Personally, I enjoy movies like Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre because they are like nightmares. The way Michael Myers and Leatherface chase people but don't quite catch them is like in a nightmare where you feel and/or see the thing chasing you but can't get away and yet it never quite catches you. It's about the fear of being caught, rather than showing you the actual catching.

My favourite bit of TCM is where the girl has escaped from the house and is fleeing from Leatherface and runs into tangled branches. It feels like she is fighting her way through the branches for ages and all the time Leatherface is coming after her but never quite catches her. Another dream-like sequence is when the girl wakes up in the house to find herself tied to the chair at the dining table with the whole family around her and she screams and screams and screams for what feels like a quarter of an hour. The montage is excellent in both scenes.

I've had the same nightmare a couple of times with different things chasing me. Once it was Cybermen from Doctor Who and another time it was Freddy Krueger(s). No matter which way I ran I always ran into them but I always had another way to run, so they never actually caught me. But the chase went on and on and on.

I feel that the best of these films with creatures like Michael Myers, Leatherface, etc. are the ones that successfully create that nightmarish feeling that you are trapped in a chase that can never end but that you can't let the thing catch you either. Laurie is trapped in that chase in the last section of Halloween. Most of TCM is taken up with Sally trapped in some situation or other.

MikeO, all that point-by-point fisking of what you PERCEIVE to be holes in Halloween shows you're missing the point. Utterly. Not trying to pick a fight, but you do realize that classic horror is full of monsters that amble slowly and still manage to catch their prey. It's not a plot fault, it's called suspense. Meanwhile, the mask helps hide the face of a fugitive with an APB out on him so he can wander about anonymously. And if you didn't get that his survival after six rounds into the chest alluded to a dark supernatural presence in him, well, we can't help you here.

I'm not even a huge fan of the film myself. I just abhorr overanalysis of fluff.

A quote from Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on today's EW.com, relevant to the discussion above:
What do you think of today's horror resurgence?
There hasn't been a movie in quite a long time that I categorize as a true horror movie. I don't consider slasher movies horror movies. There was House of Wax with Paris Hilton — but I call that a comedy. The last fantastic horror movie, I think, was The Sixth Sense.
I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

I think the first "Saw" movie was pretty decent as well as a thriller. The sequels, however......well, let's just say they were a little lackluster.

I didn't watch any horror movies on Hallowe'en. I just had to confess that to someone. I feel dirty...

As far as no decent horror movies being made, I'm afraid that, once again, there seems to be a preoccupation with only considering Hollywood fare. What about Ring? The Eye? There are some really great horror movies coming from the far east at the moment. I go to an international horror film festival every year in April and there's always plenty of new stuff to watch. It's not all top notch, but to say that there's been no good horror movies since The Sixth Sense is totally unfair.

EDIT: Hey! Post #500!
