Thanks for the reply, Zion. The "add new hardware" doesn't work, because what keeps happening is that it recognizes the case, but not the Maxtor drive inside the case. It also tries to install software for the case, which is impossible because it's a plug-and-play device.

So I really hope that the hard drive itself wasn't affected by any of this. I'll let you know what happens after I try those other options (including plugging direct into the motherboard)...
