Wow. It would have been so much better if that scene was left intact. All Lucas had to do was cut five seconds of Jar Jar screen time to make room for it.

Lucas doesn't know how quigon came back either.

The force ghost stuff will forever be a mystery. LOL but midichlorians.... yeah we needed that explained, ha ha ha... george...

I've never understood this desire to try and find detailed explanations for things.
Lucas and the other writers just did what seemed the coolest/most dramatic in the particular scene. And their idea of that changed in the different movies.
In general, I believe they are much more concerned about making a fun movie than trying to slavishly follow every rule and idea that came up before. It's only the hard-core fans who feel everything should be explainable.

Darth Lucas: I am altering the trilogy. Pray I don't alter it further.

Yeah, that was transcribed straight from the screenplay. It's an interesting read. There's a lot of neat stuff in the illustrated screenplay. Storyboards, script form of a few of the deleted scenes that ended up on the dvd, and some extra snippets of dialogue and action.

Most people don't realize it, but I did a lot of slavish research on discarded ideas when I made "Balance of the Force".
I tried to use as much of George's original ideas as possible to make it sort of an alternate "what if?" version.
The racial tension between the Gungans and the Naboo, the line about Jar Jar stinking up the ship, the line about Jar Jar's sentence of being "pounded to death", the slave labor being the core of the story instead of taxation, even the dubbing of the aliens were all scrapped concepts from earlier screenplay drafts.
I also got the idea of naming the globe at the end of TPM the "Kyber Crystal", and making it a stolen Gungan treasure, as a throwback to the early drafts of the OT, which had a crystal by the same name.
Sometimes I think a lot of people think I pulled a lot of that stuff out of my ass with an attitude of "my ideas are better than George's", when it was really a case of "here are some of George's discarded ideas that I really liked".

I have always held your version in much higher regard than the other edits. None of which I have a problem with mind you, I figure if editing the movie is going to allow someone to enjoy it more, then more power to them. But yours was a substantial effort with obvious thought and care put into it. Where others just seemed to simulate chapter skips at all the "bad" parts, yours was a substantial re-working.

Wasn't Lucas interested in seeing it himself at one point?

Thanks Gomer. Glad you were able to appreciate the work that went into it.

I know what you mean about a lot of re-edits out there, not just of Star Wars, but films in general.
There are some that take a hatchet and lop out a third of the movie. Occasionally it might work, but a lot of times you end up with something that feels like an edited for television version of the original film.

I know Rick has seen Balance and enjoyed it for what it was.
It was implied to me that George had seen it as well, but I'm not certain about it.

I would guess he would have seen it if Rick has. I think that as much as he wants his films to be his way, he would appreciate your take on his work much more than criticism that comes from people who simply tell him what he did "sucks". Instead you offer an alternative without condemning what Lucas had done himself. I think it's an example of being constructive rather than destructive.

Had a thought last night in bed. Yoda was trying to tell Luke about his sister when he died and he was clearly trying to hang on to life long enough to do it. He was sick and it killed him. He didn't give himself to the Force at the last minute, he had no choice.

I feel a post in 'What did the PT need?' coming on...

I like the idea that Obi-Wan and Yoda didn't actually die, but instead went into a meditative state that transformed them just before their life ended. But you're right. This makes no sense. (And don't get me started on Obi-Wan and Yoda helping Anakin to cross over!)

I don't think they helped Anakin cross over, that is described as a tehcnique that can only be acheived for one's self in the deleted scene from ROTS I posted.

I think they just helped him become one with the Force before he actually perished.
