Only in the sense that DVD once was primarily for videophiles when it first came out and players cost hundreds of dollars. If the evolution of DVD is anything to go on, five years from now Blu-ray players (or HDDVD, in the unlikely event it wins out) will most likely cost less than $200 and there will be more Blu-ray media for sale in stores than DVDs. This is only possible if the market supports it. You can't sell a product to a market who doesn't want the product. And besides, when HD-DVD and BluRay come out people will choose the one which is better value, the one which is cheaper. Just like most people buy one of the cheaper model DVD players, even though it may not have all the features of the more expensive players. Who is going to buy HD-DVD or BluRay when most people don't have HD-TV sets yet? When, in fact some countries haven't even yet worked out approved specifications for their HD-TV format yet! These folks ALL refer to the technology generically as "HD DVD". They make no distinction between the two an coudn't tell the difference between them, and neither could anyone else.
One of the things I once heard on the radio many years ago now, was someone trying to promote DVD's. This was before all DVD players were region-free, and I'll never forget it because the caller wanted to ask where he could get a region-free player, and the guy promoting the DVD format explained he could not help with it and that he believed in region coding. But the saddest thing about it was the caller referred to our region as being Region Five, and he never corrected the caller to explain the correct region number. Joe public doesn't care about the theory of it - they want to experience it, learn from their friends and family who've bought the product - and follow them to make better decisions. People are going to buy the better format, not the technically superior format. And then you have the more techie folks who are almost all taking the "wait and see" position, as am I.
That's exactly what they'll do.
