I rarely go to Star Wars’ official site but I figured I would pop over there to see if there is anything new about the 09/12 release. There on the homepage you see the following:

Hyperspace Reveals the Secrets of Star Wars 07
May 10, 2006

Fans are already primed to make next year a Star Wars year to remember. 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved saga, and already there are whispers of possible events that will commemorate that milestone. But what hasn’t yet been talked about is the biggest entertainment event of the year: a major addition to the Star Wars mythos.

It begins now. As with the earliest glimpses of Episode III, Hyperspace will be the first place to get a look at the secrets 2007 holds. A new image series, rich with explosive and intriguing concept art, is your first look at next year’s biggest Star Wars surprise. Hyperspace members, click here to see it.

You can see it only in Hyperspace, and this is just the start. If you’re not yet a member of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club, then sign up today!

And then on this page the 6th bullet point:

Exclusive new videos, including glimpses into forthcoming Star Wars DVD releases and other rarities unearthed from the Lucasfilm archives.

Even though it says the above was written in March 10, 2006 ('07 info on May 10), I think it is highly, HIGHLY suspect that they kept the March update around and linked it with the more recent '07 one. Sure it can be argued that the sentence above is talking about the 09/12 release, but LFL had more than enough time to update since that announcement. Since they have not, I say they didn’t because there are even more releases and “rarities” on the way.

Which brings us to the once again catch 22. Lucas wants to see if the OUT DVD's sell. If they don't, then there's no reason to include them in the rumored archival edition of the saga. If of course they do sell well, then he'll more than likely include an anamorphic and restored transfer within the archival edition box set, proving once AGAIN that a year can't go by where Luca$ needs to rape the fans wallets. I think I'm just going to got to San Francisco and blow up LFL. All empires fall eventually.

If this were Paramount or Universal, for example, it would be permissible to release multiple versions of the same film, due to their vast catalogue of movies.

However, such is not the case with Lucasfilm. What are we talking about, in terms of the company's body of work here? 8 films, really?

It's inexcusable. I realize we're talking Star Wars here, the very pinnacle of pop culture, but what is our breaking point as a fanbase? How many times can they go back to the well before we say, "Enough is enough." I thought that sending the SE discs from the upcoming set was foolhardy and pointless, but now I think I see the value of it. I'm packing them up like a plate of cookies and sending them back. In fact, maybe I'll ship all of my Star Wars crap from 1997 on back to LFL.

The fact of the matter is, Lucasfilm is aware of the rabid fan preservation community and this is their way of stemming the tide, which, as we all know, won't work.

This DVD release is a short term solution to a long term problem.

The special "surprise" is probably just that tv series.

The sad thing is many years ago, I would always be hyped to hear anything newsworthy of SW, via the movies, video release. Now it just comes down to one question: Does it contain a remastered O-OT version in the boxset? If the answer is no, then I don't care George.

That's the thing exactly. I yearn for the days when Snaggletooth was just Snaggletooth and Walrusman didn't have a backstory.

I remember that when there was the flurry of posts right after the upcoming original unaltered trilogy release that there were reports that the O-OT had been professionally restored, before Lucasfilm announced that it was going to be a rip of the old DE laserdisc master. Maybe the upcoming super-duper deluxe special archive saga boxset will have this restored version. One can hope.

Of course, while I hoping, I'd love to see the deleted ESB and ROTJ scenes, and restored versions of the original documentaries. But since I don't think that any of these will happen, I'll just go back to hoping for the O-OT in a decent format.

The "restoration" was referring to the 1993 work ... the new telecine and the DVNR.

I thought the '93 colors were generally considered okay? At least they're better than the '04 "Crayola 8-pack" coloring.

I was referring to postings by some people that said there was a restoration much more recent than the '93 DE restoration. Some of it was quotes from someone on another site who told about the issues with the '04 DVDs before they hit the streets.

The DE colors beat the hell out of the '04 colors, but are they correct...?

Well, when compared directly to the 70mm film cels I've collected over the years, the DE/Faces colors are much more accurate that the '04 colors.

I think the color correction that Steve Sansweet was referring to was the original color correction done for the DE set back in '93. I don't think any further color correction will be done for the 9/12 DVDs, and that's probably a good thing- since they would probably end up looking like the '04 DVDs.

It's funny- when I first bought the DVDs back in '04 and popped SW into my DVD player, I knew something looked off. It wasn't until I came here that my suspicions were confirmed.

Yeah, and I agree with CO, that unless the OOT is given a proper DVD release- I'm not at all interested in any of GL's "surprises".

Upcoming DVD releaes? But I thought that this one was George's "original vision." As I've stated on numerous occasions, I firmly believe that Lucas is anything but stupid, and that he knows releasing a remastered OOT on the boxed set would mean that people like me would pay through the nose to get it. He's one of the most brilliant businessmen that the earth has ever known. The Lucasfilm archives my...more like "Now that we have seen that there is demand for a remastered OOT we might consider it."

I was thinking that too, but it sounds too good to be true. Then there is the case of these DVDs. Judging from what figures are looking like now, it appears that sales will be good, but not great. I think that now, our best option appears to be prayer.

If LFL would release the product that I want to buy I wouldn't hesitate for a microsecond to purchase it.

The fact of the matter is, Lucasfilm is aware of the rabid fan preservation community and this is their way of stemming the tide, which, as we all know, won't work.

If this release had been a high-quality release, then it would have. This release seems to have done the exact opposite of what Lucas wanted, in that instead of ending the whole situation (which it would have done had these DVD releaes not sucked), it's blown the doors open on the whole situation.

The sad thing is many years ago, I would always be hyped to hear anything newsworthy of SW, via the movies, video release. Now it just comes down to one question: Does it contain a remastered O-OT version in the boxset? If the answer is no, then I don't care George.

Sadly, I'm coming to agree. The most pervese part is, if there is a remasted OOT in it, then LFL stand to regain me as a fan and make more money, but until such a time, I am done with Star Wars.

One can hope.

Yes, we can. And hope springs eternal, hopefully.

Well, when compared directly to the 70mm film cels I've collected over the years, the DE/Faces colors are much more accurate that the '04 colors.

Mightn't that be because Lowry was rushed and given thirty days to do the work instead of what Spielberg did, which was actually take a little time and effort on the Indiana Jones boxed set. Not only does the 04 set not contain the Star Wars movies like it advertises, but the so-called remaster was rushed. If you want that to be the definitive version George, then make it the definitve version.

The special "surprise" is probably just that tv series.

That what I figured too, but why would that be in the archives?

I would like to correct something stated in that official statement:

2007 is NOT the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars Saga. It will mark the 30th anniversary of the greatest film of all time, Star Wars, a brilliant, timeless film which spawned one excellent sequel, another satisfactory if uninspired sequel, the Clone Wars series, and those three cartoons with twirling saberdance and Gungans.

2013 is the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars Trilogy.

2027 is the 30th anniversary of the bastardization of the Star Wars Trilogy.

And 2029 is the 30th anniversary of George Lucas' descent into utter stupidity.

May the Force be with us. And this is podracing.

There's been a lot of discussion about the subject of the kind of 'blue' tint that the '04 DVDs seem to have. Some think that it's because Lowry screwed up, others think that it was done deliberately to make the DVDs 'match' the tone of the PT films.

Well, this is not making much sense. Has there been any further info about this? More to the point, what the hell are they talking about?

proving once AGAIN that a year can't go by where Luca$ needs to rape the fans wallets

Have they put out a DVD product per year since 01?

Even though it says the above was written in March 10, 2006 ('07 info on May 10), I think it is highly, HIGHLY suspect that they kept the March update around and linked it with the more recent '07 one. Wishful thinking? I don't know. Judging by the bonus disc-less release, it takes a bit more than new changes to get the fans excited, and I think that most people have had it and just want to own a good release. I think this now comes down to how far LFL are willing to go. Will the 30th anniversary boxed set sell well? Sure, it has the Star Wars name attached to it. But will it sell really, really well? Only if it has something to entice the fansbase in it. The question is whether or not Lucas is willing to put aside his ego and if LFL have the balls to put their money where their mouths are. Pardon my bluntness.

Btw. I heard from a guy working at Sideshow Collectibles, that something "big" from Lucasfilm would be unearthed at Celebration IV in LA. He did not tell me what, but I guess there will be glimpses at Star Wars in 3D. I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
