Anybody seen this? "Don't Download This Song" by Weird Al http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwxutLMCnls

It is from Weird Al's new album. The song is about file sharing, it is funny and pretty accurate.

Weird Al Yankovic is not the same since he shaved his mustache.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Yeah, I kept looking at him thinking something seemed off about him, then I realized he shaved the mustache.

It is funny, but moreover it is very accurate. The video is animated, it is about downloading mp3s, it is very ironic. It makes fun of how out of proportion the record industry has taken it. It is kind of refreshing to have an artist write lyrics like "don't steal from artist such as me, how else will I afford another solid gold humvee, or diamond studded swimming pools, these things don't grow on trees." Another great line goes somewhere along the lines of the RIAA will sue you whether you're an old woman or a seven year old girl. The video has police men chasing a young kid and constantly shooting bullets at him.
If you, like me, feel the record and movie industry are contantly throwing out lesser and lesser quality products, then blaming lack of sells on piracy, you'll get a kick out of this video. I don't support piracy, but they throw it way beyond what is warranted, in my opinion. I thought a lot more people on these boards would have comments on this subject.

As of right now, these 'artists' are in the top ten of the most downloaded songs on itunes. Ludacris, jojo, Justin Timberlake, Fergie, and Beyonce. I don't want to knock anyones taste in music... ...Ok I do. What the fuck are people thinking??? I don't want to live in a world where pretty little poptarts like jojo get ranked in the top ten and go platinum while awesome bands like the Ranconteurs or Pas/Cal fall by the wayside. I don't want to live in a world where the average teenager's knowlege of musical history doesn't even span back far enough to remember a time when MTV actually played videos, let alone far enough to appreciate the founders and gods of the medium. Chuck Berry, Elvis, Carl Perkins, The Beatles, The Who, Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin. To todays audiences, Led Zeppelin is a t-shirt they saw in Hot Topic, not one of the immortal gods of rock. Stevie Wonder is some blind guy they saw Eddie Murphy doing on a re-run of Saturday Night Live. Isn't that guy from The Who into kiddie porn? Chuck who? Standards have been lowered so far that nearly anything is accepted as a 'song'. Listen to Justin Timberlake's newest song. Get yer sexy on, lather rinse repeat for 3 minutes, BANG! Musical Gold!!! How did things get so low? If you ask me, it all started when hip-hop and rap began to invade mainstream music. Suddenly, any idiot with a few old records and a sampled drum beat was an 'artist'. I think if the kids today could be shown the wealth of music there is out there that goes beyond what happened 5 minutes ago, they would be amazed. Then they would be stunned at how shitty all the crap they have on their ipod really is.

And still, Bob Dylan's new album is #1.

Actually, 'Modern Times' is listed as #5 under Beyonce and Justin Timberlake on Billboard's website. Still, very suprising.

Mr Timberlake is on the cover of Rolling Stone this month - Rolling Fucking Stone Magazine!!

I totally agree with everything you said Obiwampa.

Real music is now a niche underground market.

War does not make one great.

It is close to the same thing with films these days, it is just an easy buck.

"Oh, you're cute! What's your name little guy?"
"Justin"
"You know, I think we can sell you! What do you think about being in a boy band Justin"
"I can't sing"
"Ahh, who care what do ya say? Just sign on the dotted line."

The whole music industry is a big joke now. The movie industry is headed in that direction, if they're not there already. When was the last time a Casablanca or a Wizard of Oz was made? Or a Citizen Cain or lets lower our standards a little and say when was the last time a Dr. Strangelove, or a China Town or even a Raider's of the Lost Ark. Heck even something of the quality of Jurassic Park would be refreshing. There have always been crappy movies, but now it is a joke even going to the cinema. I think that is why the Lord of the Rings films were so popular. Because they were well written and filmed movies that didn't go overboard with CG. Now that the LOTR trilogy is a few years old it is funny to see the same people who flocked to the theater to see them call them boring. Maybe it is because in the context of rewatchability they don't go very far, but for their initial viewing they blew people away. I grew up with Star Wars and Back to the Future, but look at what kids have these days to grow up with. The magical world of disney and movies of like quality. I can't believe the cheese that gets released to theaters these days.

On that note, I try not to download anything I do not already own on CDs or as part of a movie soundtrack, but I ironically almost never buy CDs anymore, not because I download the songs, but because I simply don't feel like plunking down fifteen dollars when I know that there are rarely more than three songs that I actually care about on a disc.

The only way CD sales are going to pick up is if artists start putting out music of a more consistent quality or if the prices drop to a reasonable level.

Yeah, I don't download either, and neither do I buy CDs. It just isn't worth it anymore. Now you can buy custom made CDs from Wal-Mart full of only the songs you want, I am not sure how the selection is though.

For people living in the U.S. http://www.walmart.com/music 88 cents a song looks like. If you add it all up it is somewhere around $20 for a full cd, it would be worth it since it is only the songs you choose.

Please don't shop at Wal Mart. They need to be taken down a notch. At least untill they start giving their workers a decent benefits package. And by decent I mean something that reflects their position as the WORLDS largest retailer.

Uh, that is an interesting thought. I hate Wal-Mart as much as the next guy (no really! I do!). But for one they pay their employees just fine for the type of job it is. If they aren't too happy with it they could perhaps consider getting an education and a real job. Otherwise, good luck finding a job that pays a whole lot higher than Wal-Mart. And I guess it is a good thing Wal-Mart doesn't enslave their employees and force then to work for them for the rest of their lives, then if they were to find a better job they couldn't quit and take that instead. Also, don't eat at McDonnald's, they don't pay their employees near enough, just look what each McDonald's resurant brings in each and everyday.

The hardest part about not shopping at Wal-Mart is that most of the time their prices are much lower, and they have no qualms about returns, none at all it is really amazing what they will take back without a receipt.

This may just show my bias, but I think the whole 'war on walmart' nonsense is just a political issue that the out-of-touch far left support essentially because Wal-Mart isn't unionized.

There are certainly stores I'd rather shop in that Wal-Mart, but if you're looking for low prices and easy-to-find stuff it's there.

And actually another thing to add to Wal-Mart's defense. There is a woman I knew who was dying of cancer. She was an employee at a Sam's Club (for those who don't know, Sam's Club is owned by Wal-Mart). She had been sick and in the hospital for a long time and by this time she had been out of work for so long her insurance was about to run out. They let her come back into work and they made her a nice comfortable place to sit in the brake room where she didn't have to do anything. They gave her enough hours just so she could get passed the legally technicallity and keep her insurance. I hear of Wal-Mart/Sam's Club of doing things like this often for their employees. What obligates them to pay higher wages to their employees just because they are such a big company. Look at any other deparment or grocery store, I bet thet will be no better in price or benefits. A lot of grocery stores don't even higher people for 40 hours a week anymore because they don't want to have to give any benefits at all. Instead they higher twice as many people and only give them 20 - 30 hours a week.

C3PX, although it's a nice story, I'm sure this was absolutely an exception and an iniciative of those who used to work with her. If the central office or the medicare company knew about it, what do you think they'd do?

I am not really trying to defend them, I certianly dislike complete control of a city by a single store. Especially smaller towns. You will hear about them moving in and putting all other stores out of business, then rasing their prices. I lived in one such small town for a period of about eight months and it sucked. The town pretty much consisted of Wal-mart, Hastings, and a Staples (well, of the type of store I would go to). Everybody bought groceries from Wal-mart, rented videos or bought books from Hastings, and staples was just kind there in case you needed it. However, I am sure there benefits are pretty close to the same as Target, K-Mart, ShopKo, S-Mart , or any other such stores. To say not to shop at Wal-Mart because they need to treat there employees better, I just don't see that to be relevent. I was merely giving an example of a story I heard to the contrary. And you are right, it was probably because she had friends in high places. It is also not the only story I have heard of employees in tough situations being given a break. Not to mention that if you work for them you get a whole whopping 10% off anything in the store... except groceries.

Yeah, I'm in one of those small college towns that has become a Super Wal-Mart-opolis. I've tried to diversify and not go there as much as I used to. I go there for electronics and other random stuff, but I do my grocery shopping at Kroger. They have a better organics and vegetarian selection anyway. And I'm a Kroger Plus member.
