That example seems pretty harsh, like there's a sudden drop off in the focal range, although it could just be the small image playing tricks on me (cool looking shot though, please post if you find the link, Editous!). I'm thinking of something much much more subtle and also occurring more gradually. From that POV shot, I'm guessing we're supposed to be looking out over at least a couple hundred meters, to maybe a kilometer? While technically there wouldn't be in space, I think instinctively the brain is going to be expecting a bit of softening of the details the further away you look. I don't know though, almost anything done to the shot at this point I think is going to look faked in post. Regardless, it might be tricky...something like using a gradient to modify the effect of a soften filter, and then tracked to the diving motion of the shot?
You know, looking at it again, I think my biggest problem with that shot is actually the laser bolts. They're fairly hard-edged, and LOOK like seaprate elemets.
