Limited Edition DVDs not coming from LD masters?

Hi, sorry if this has been posted before. If so, feel free to delete it.

So, anyway, my point is:

Lucasfilm tried to justify the quality of the OOT (non anamorphic and all that) by telling that the used the Laserdisc master to do this DVDs, and that the quality of the source was that.

But then we watch A New Hope and... hey... wait a second... it is NOT A New Hope. Is just STAR WARS. It has the opening crawl... that was NOT released on Laserdisc. Hmmm... there's something strange here.

Maybe this version comes from the original negatives (Lucas destroyed them? LOL!!) and was "downgraded" on purpose, just to keep the people still wanting a decent version.

I put nothing past LFL...NOTHING. I've never seen the Laserdiscs, but I do find it strange that people are saying the picture is better. Yes, it is true that an analog source is being converted to digital so that would probably have something to do with it. But I have heard some people describe the picture as "much better" than the LD, so how could this be true?

I've said it a million times, but I am positive we will see a great transfer of the OUT very soon...

There has been much speculation as to whether the pre-episode IV crawl is a new transfer from the original '77 theatrical cut or an edit of the laserdisc post-episode IV crawl. The consensus seems to have come round to it being a transfer direct from the original '77 movie. There's a whole thread about it somewhere in this section.

This consensus has, in turn, led to speculation that, if a new transfer of the '77 opening has been done, then perhaps a new transfer has been done for the whole thing? And that is a very exciting thought...
Don't you call me a mindless philosopher...!

JED, the GOUT (new DVD set) definitely comes from the same master tapes used to create the Definitive Collection & "Faces" Laserdiscs. All except the opening crawl, which was added from another source.

ESBHG, although Laserdiscs are analogue, the Laserdisc master tapes are digital. The Laserdisc format was not able to realize all the detail available on the tapes; DVD comes closer.

There is plenty more info on both these topics on these forums.

A source which they won't use to create a better release.
