The "Made in Japan" Sony AccuCores I'm currently using have media ID YUDEN000T02.
However if your AccuCore package says "Made in Taiwan," chances are they're not Taiyo Yuden,
but still 1st class if they're one of the SONY media IDs.

You should definitely check for updated firmware for your drive. Older firmwares simply don't know about the newer media IDs and default to slow speed with media they don't recognize.

Brand names mean nothing. As DM points out, those Sony AccuCores might be made in Japan (Taiyo Yudens) or made in Taiwan (media ID unknown by me as I won't risk buying those). The 16x AccuCores seem to be Taiwan, and the 8x I have found to be TY Japan. But you can burn them at 12x. If you want to find Taiyo Yudens, look for Sony, Fuji, or Maxell made in Japan. Or you can by them under the TY badge online.

I swear by Taiyo Yudens and have never had one crap out on me. If you do a check of PI/PO errors (PlexTools does this for me), you can get an indication of the burn quality of your discs. Good results bear well on future ability to copy them. My friend at a duplication shop swears by Prodiscs. I tried some out and was pleased with the results. These are made in Taiwan, btw. Anyhow, check out the link provided by DM.
