Another (and muuuuch slower) filter for vertical interpolation is Sangnom, which removes the jaggies almost completely, but causes some artifacts in detail areas.

Unfortunately I am only working with the PAL version, which is already upscaled. If I'd have access to some (jaggy) clips from the NTSC version, I could check if there's a way to somehow recover those fields.

Excellent. I didn't get very far in finding a solution. Any way I can be of help with my NTSC version?

Can anyone help me with doing the conversion. I thought I had everything set up correctly, but I get the following error when going to the "encode" step using DVD Rebuilder v0.97.
ERROR:
D:\A2AVS\item.ecl is not a ECL for Cinema Craft Encoder. SP.

I have CCE 2.7 SP installed, and path set correctly in DVD Rebuilder. Any ideas?

Sorry, I haven't used CCE, but I did have good luck with Quenc.

Any updates from anyone trying to get rid of the "jaggies"?

Yes, it is the trial. Still not sure what the problem is, any ideas?

Bad crack.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

DVD Rebuilder has to have a specific Ecl file installed if you are using a trial. Unfortunately, the .ecl files are no longer developed, so there is none for 2.7, the latest version.

If you can get an older trial version, you cna download the Ecl file here:

Isn't CCE SP2 the latest?

You are mistaken, v2.7 of CCE doesn't require the eclCCE add-on it can handle the scripts directly.
Perhaps you have DVDrb setup for the wrong version of CCE (or a badly cracked version of CCE and/or DVDrb).

DVDrb should point to cctspt.exe or something like that in your CCE directory.

The one you're looking for is on the Options Tab. Follow the tree down: AVS Options/AVS Expert Options:Convert from LB 4:3 to 16:9.
You can also adjust for ITU aspect ratio and use any additional AviSynth filter you'd like (in case you want to tweak the picture while it's at it.)

I'd consider DVD Rebuilder a near on perfect tool if it would allow PAL -> NTSC (and back) conversion.

Check out these guide:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd_rebuilder_tutorial.cfm
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd_rebuilder_tutorial_advanced.cfm
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdrb.htm

They're not all up to date (settings have been moved around), but it'll get you started.

Not to go aff topic, but you mention PAL-> NTSC... is there anything that does it right? Resizes, keeps menus, adjusts for the PAL speed-up?

DVD Rebuilder Pro is really cool for anamorphic work and I love it! Now I wonder if there's something easy to do proper PAL conversion. Too many of the existing tutorials and tools leave the audio sped up and strip frames. I want the 25fps slowed to 23.976 or whathave you. Menus intact and audio all correct too. Anyone have experience with said? Right now the only option acceptable is WinDVD with the TruSpeed. But I want to watch on my HDTV not the computer.

@ Zottig - I haven't heard of anything like that. That I'm aware of its a long and involved process not a one-click solution. Though if anyone knows of such a software title I'm sure we'd all be interested in hearing about it.

There are (few) click solutions for movie only conversions, but as yet nothing that can convert an entire DVD PAL <-> NTSC.

It's rumored that DVD-rb will tackle it once it is completely stable for the features that it has now.

You can always try the "patch method" http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=221928&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=ea22ae25d0863eeb478483b3128cab27
It's not 100% compatible (doesn't work on my DVD player), but many people have success with it.

Long time reader, first time poster. I've decided to make my own anamorphic transfers of these films. I do have one quesition however. Does ripping these movies with DVDFab remove the Xbox game demo? That would be a very large waste of space. Currently, I'm putting them on a DVD5, but may buy 3 DVD9s if I get the process down pat.

I can't be certain about DVDFab but I know DVD Decrypter only rips the Video_TS folder.
That means the Xbox demo, PC content, and even cover folders should be removed.
DVDFab should be the same. If you decided to add any of that later, it's not encrypted so you can just drag and drop it from the DVD to your PC.

That depends on how you rip it. I don't know what DVDFab's options are, but it's likely to be similar to the ones in DVD Decrypter. If you rip in .ISO mode, you'll get an .ISO image file that is exactly identical to the DVD you ripped it from (except the removal of certain restrictions if you select the appropriate options), including the XBox demo. If your intention is to reauthor these as anamorphic DVDs, however, you're going to want to rip in IFO mode, which will give you only the video and audio (and possibly subtitle) data.

That's if you rip in File mode.

After my first stab at it, the results are pretty good. My next question: I've left in the Lego video but took out the extra audio and subtitle tracks. Is there any way to remove the lego video as well as the menu reference to it and remove the menu references to the languages and subtitles that I've removed? Currently, the only tools that I have are DVD Fab and DVD Rebuilder. In the past, I've used virtualdub to create my own anamorphic xvid with ac3 audio of Top Gun, before that was rereleased in an anamorphic transfer. Is there another tool I'd need to accomplish what I want to do?

Thanks,
Ryan

What exactly do you mean by an "anamorphic" XviD? As far as I know, AVI files are always displayed in a 1:1 square pixel ratio (unless you specify otherwise manually in your media player).
Author

I'm not sure what you're asking.
Are you talking about actually removing the content and the option from the menu?

You are a sucker for punishment. Grab DVDReMake Pro. You can pretty much do anything you want to a DVD with it.
http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremake/index.php

Btw, you can make anamorphic Xvids if you have a Matroska wrapper instead of avi.
I never saw the point unless you didn't want to resize an anamorphic source.

Edit: Oh yeah, you can do it with an avi, but you have to specify the option in your codec to force 16x9 playback. .mkv automatically plays in widescreen if it's been flagged as such.

I guess I used the wrong terminology. I should have said I made a widescreen xvid (with 1:1 pixels for a 2.35:1 aspect ratio) by ripping and removing the black borders, and then rematted and burned to a DVD with the anamorhpic flag.

As far as my DVD goes, yeah, I would like to get rid of the references in the menu. If I use the program stated, will the menus I edit be able to be placed back with the main video file seamlessly, or will it be too difficult to be worthwhile?

I ripped the subtitles, but they all were off about 0.4 seconds after the first one. For all who are making their own 16:9 subtitles via anamorphic upconvert, this may help save you some time. With the mods' indulgence I may cross-post this in a couple of relevant threads. You can use either of these. I'm using Haettenschweiler 20 pt to approximate the original subtitles fairly closely. Save either of these to a .txt file and import into DVD-Lab Pro.

Why would you rip, convert to divx and then back to DVD? Isn't that an extra step and make the final DVD look worse (which is the opposite of the reason why you'd convert to anamorphic)?

As far as the menus, you can do anything you want but it depends on how far you want to go. You could just remove the feature in question, the feature and the menu's ability to select it, you could remove the ability to scroll over it as an option, or you could completely redesign the menu leaving the option in question out.
The last being of course crazy and complicated.

ADM: I'm assuming when you converted you did it manually. Didn't the ripping software give you a delay number you could use when reauthoring the disc?

Dr. M

Author

The delay number was zero on the GOUT (at least, it is on SW -- haven't done the others yet). Plus, the first subtitle was in sync, but the rest weren't. I haven't really investigated why yet (or compared to the original to see if the problem is there) as I'm focused on just getting it done. I'll try to do a little more research to figure out what's going on.

That's it, I give up.

If anyone has sucessfully converted the DVDs into anamorphic DVDs, and would like to trade the three for a set of my prequel edits, shoot me a PM.

Hey, I tried.

Hal, lemme help you out. I know you can do this. I've done SW and ESB to great success so far.
