Maybe 'rough shape' is code for "not blue enough"?
Seriously, though, he was probably referring to film grain, scratches, etc. Lowry is kind of notorious for their film grain removal. I hear they went way overboard with the grain removal for Citizen Kane, and it took out a bit of film detail, as well.
