The HD version looks fantastic. Unfortunately, there is an INHD² watermark on the image. But even worse, it has been cropped to 16:9 and a lot of image has been lost at the top and bottom. Nevertheless, it is leaps and bounds better than my laserdisc.

As someone who upped an HD version of Rad about a year ago, I can say that it isn't a matter of cropping. The movie was open matte on LD and VHS, and the anamorphic widescreen version crops out only unneeded information that was never meant to be seen in the first place.

Have you put it on BitTorrent lately? I'd love to have a better quality version of this. My old one is VHS sourced.

I'm almost finished with the new DVD using the HD file as the source. It will be dual layer to preserve the best possible quality, anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. I may do a bare bones single layer version as well, I haven't decided.

Here are some sample menu shots. The menus are full motion with audio.

I must say. It looks VERY good. Too bad there isn't an official DVD yet. Your version will be the closest thing we could get.

radchris - I PM'd you back. I'm not sure if you got it.

Anyway, regarding availability, it will be posted to the newsgroups when completed. Probably alt.binaries.dvd. From there it's on its own.

If anyone is interested, here is a small (8MB) DivX of the main menu.

And here are some comparison shots between my original laserdisc sourced DVD and the new HD sourced DVD. As you can see there is no comparison.

Starkiller-

This looks incredible. Love the menus and the DVD cover. I can't wait to get my hands on this. Kudos.

I have a question to all - what's the best app and news server to pull this down? I'm hoping that someone seeds as a torrent, but just in case that doesn't happen I'd like to know if there are any tricks with the newsgroups. I've never personally had too much luck with free servers, etc. before.

Thanks.

The menu screen is AWESOME! Hope to get my hands on a copy in the future.

Intersting how the LD version looks so close to VHS quality. I guess those old LDs weren't as great as I thought they were. I always assumed LDs were nere DVD quality.

It depends on the individual LD. Some of them were better than others. For example, the earlier Star Wars releases were pretty bad compared to the definitive edition and the faces sets, the last two releases. The last two were pretty good quality.

And, unless I'm completely offbase here LDs are not digital, but analog. What player you are using makes a huge difference as well. Most LD people covet the Pioneer CLD-97 etc. for this reason. And that's why the X0 guys were using that particular player for their Star Wars project.

It is funny though because my dad had a laserdisc player (still does) and I remember it being FAR superior to VHS at the time (early/mid 90's). It doesn't look nearly impressive as it used to. I'm glad the days of $100(+) LDs are over. Thank you DVD.

i'm painfully reminded of the day my friend had mad max borrowed, but we all wanted to watch it so we grabbed a VHS copy.

we got about 10 minutes into the film until we all couldn't stand it and ransacked the friend that had borrowed it

ah.... good times

HERE'S WAITING ON THE DVD! great project!

There are several apps to choose from and it really comes down to personal choice. I use Xnews myself; Grabit and Agent are popular too. There are numerous servers out there. I find the best deal is with Astraweb. Anyway, my buddy Russs15 has some great tips here and here.

I'm not going to torrent it myself, but if someone else wants to that's fine.

Yes, the quality of the Rad laserdisc is really not that great. I am really excited to have the new HD source. By the way radchris, I believe you need to turn on your Private Messages in your profile. I think they are off by default.

Wow. What I see so far looks great.

I've been trying to get a copy of the Rad laserdisc to do my own conversion. The last one that went up on ebay sold well over 200 bucks!

I wish I could have copied the HD source when it was on.

Anyway, I too would love to get a copy of this. I have no problems PIF.

I think I saved all the rar and par files that I d/l from usenet for the HD version of RAD.
I've already got the .ts file on the hd in my HTPC, so I could possibly mail you the dvds that contain the .rar files. I will have to go home from work tonight and check to see if I still have those dvds.

Forgive my ignorance, but how you put a HD movie onto regular DVD? When you encode for DVD, won't it use MPEG2 and 480 lines of resolution? I would love to know how this is done, since I have some HD material I would like to get from my computer to my HDTV...thanks!

Does anyone remember the video store rental copy of Rad advertisting for the dirt bike kid (and vice versa)?

From when starkiller posted that message until now there are about 4GiB of headers on alt.binaries.dvd that my newsreader needs to chew through before I could possibly find the upload and my ISP caps it at ~30KiB. Grr. If my math is correct that'll be about two days from now which runs afoul with the 30 day rention rate. Can anyone confirm/deny if it has indeed been posted and give me an approximate date so I can find it?

Or point me to a tool to help me help myself. my old stand by guba seems to have turned into a youtube knock-off and google feigns ignorance of the group.

thanks

Yeah I have a vhs of Rad that has the trailer for The Dirt Bike Kid. I haven't seen that movie in a long time

The original hd .ts file for "Rad" (1986) - INHD2 .ts 1080i was posted on usenet about 61 days ago. I haven't seen anything that Starkiller has uploaded, well at least yet. He is probably still working on it. Might want to send him a pm and find out some more info.
