DVD Codecs

I've noticed that when playing DVDs on my computer glowing reds appear 'chunky.' The pixels are enlarged and curved shapes (like R-2's eye) are especially bothersome. Does anyone knows how to resolve this? Is it a codec issue? I've tried playback on a PC and a Mac with similar results. Thanks in advance!

MPEG2 only stores colour information once every 2 pixels, since the human eye is more sensitive to differences in luminance (brightness). Deep reds have low luminance as well, which makes them look worse. Having said that, the blockiness I've seen on some R1 discs (The Abyss, for example) looks far worse than can be accounted for by the chroma subsampling (the every-2-pixels thing I was talking about). My R2 Abyss doesn't show these artefacts.

So then why does it look normal on my TV screen but funky on my computer monitor?

Okay - why does it look fine on my PC monitor and blocky on my Macintosh? I think this is called a chroma bug and am still confident it is caused by the codec.
