I'm just curious if you plan to pull out the SE DVD and it's holder and throw them away and pretend only the original was in there. Or perhaps get a new dvd case and print a new label to complete the illusion. I'm curious if any will go to these lengths.

Well, I still plan to mail the '04 discs back to Lucasfilm. If I can't do that, I probably will just throw them away. Until then, I've switched the order of the discs, putting the "bonus" disc in front.

I sold my three '04 discs on eBay (got about $20 for them) and I put the '06 DVDs in the box with the bonus disc. I have the Best Buy tin that the DVDs came in displayed on another shelf.

I took out the 2004 editions, and in put the OOT in front on ANH and ROTJ. On ESB, I removed the hinge case. In the disc 2 slot of ANH is Star Wars: A Musical Journey, and in that spot on ROTJ is the 2004 bonus disc. The insert for that is also in this case. And it's all kept in the beautiful new tin that I'm more than proud to have on my shelf.

But I won't be selling the 2004 discs. I spent money on them, even though I didn't want to. I'll keep them around, probably in an old droor somewhere. Who knows? Maybe they'll come in handy some day in some way.

The german versions already were packaged that way by default.

Wow, that's... the way it should be.

I was suprised to see the original versions in the back too. And finding them labeled as Bonus discs. Cause the reason people are buying these for the most part is for the original versions.

Yeah, but Lucas doesn't want to face that truth.

I won't be throwing out the 2004 DVD's or giving them away. I've put the OUT discs in seperate cases for now, and that should do.

I also think the reason was if it was the main release, it would've had to have been given better treatment. When people complain about the treatment and quality of this release, all Lucas has to say is, "Well the SEs are the main feature and we just included this for an added extra value to our fans." In fact, LFL has even used the word "Value" in one of their trailers. We all know that value typically means "good enough for the $."

Yes. I totally agree. Had he put this as the front and center or lone component of this release, then he most definitely would have been slaughtered for releasing such a crappy product. As bonus material, key word bonus, then we should feel lucky we're getting it at all... even though it's the only thing we want and not the so-called main feature.

I don't hate the SE, but I just took the hubs out and put them in my 2004 cases. Yeah it's the same disc twice, but I just wanted to put them somewhere.

Did anyone change the artwork? I don't know how to print covers that look like factory ones, so I just put the inserts in the front of the DVD. The "messy" look of them actually fits really well with the tin.

Anybody else do this also?

I moved the so-called 'bonus' discs to the front and the SE rubbish to the back. I will soon be putting the cases into my 2004 box, and taking the other SE's from there out and giving them to a friend, who doesn't mind the changes so much. I thought of trying to sell them on Ebay, but that process is irritating, and this way my friend gets to own the films too, in a form I'm sure he'll be okay with.

Maybe I'll burn him some copies of the originals too, if he has any interest in them.

I'm not throwing it away, even though I don't like it. Why? Because I believe that in 50 years, after GL is long gone, it is the SE that is going to become rare. Sort of like the "new coke-a-cola". Real archivists are going to go back and preserve the original, and it will be funky groups like this that will preserve the various SE's. Wishful thinking? Irrelevant because I probably won't be around to see it. But I'm convinced that's how it will play out in the LONG run.

I bought the Pan and scan version of return of the Jedi (with the OOT disc still Widescreen) so I Wasn't buying the same disc twice, plus allowing me to take high-res stills of undestroyed scenes- now I've got a high quality full screen picture of Han and Leia's embrace during the ending celebration, as well as a few other good stills (when the ewoks set them free and all of them are on screen withen the 1.33:1 frame, for example)

plus, it makes the OOT disc clearly the better choice for watching the movie:

destroyed version:
full screen format Modified to fit your screen

Original version:
2.35 Widescreen preserving theatrical presentation

Lucky for me I have The Definitive Collection that a friend gave me and it has the original theatrical versions and a nice bonus disc. I didnt even have to pay $60 for them all together. The versions i have are anamorphic widescreen so im happy about that. Im a fan of both the Special Edition Trilogy and the Original Trilogy.

How many people mailed them back? I wonder if it will mean anything at all whatsoever?

Right now I've just switched the discs' positions in the case, much like many others have done.

Rather than start a new thread, I figured this would be a good place to ask:

For everyone who preordered through FYE, did you cut out your UPC code and mail it with the form? I have to get mine mailed soon, but I'm not sure if I need to send the UPC code or not. The rebate form (I uploaded it here [90KB PDF] so that you can check it out) doesn't specifically say to send the UPCs and I'd prefer to not butcher my sleeve inserts if possible, although it would only be minor cuts. OTOH, I'd like to make sure that my rebate actually goes through instead of it being declined and tossed and I never hear about it ever again.

I didnt buy the OOT DVDs but had I bought them I would probably have given them away or thrown them away because I dont really want them again and replaced them in the slot with ADM's editions or made it into a single disc OOT set with custom covers, I have already done something like this already, I bought some DVD cases, used the custom covers from here, put ADM's editions in one slot and a fan version of the OOT in another slot to make my own SW two disc sets, I do own the silver box 04 DVD set but I dont want to get rid of them as they were a gift so I just leave them in my collection with all my other DVDs.

I finall got around to sending the 2004 S.E. discs back to Lucasfilm. I stuffed all three discs in one paper CD sleeve and stuck it in an envelope.

I attached a short note. I decided there was no benefit in being vitriolic, but I got straight to the point.

Lucasfilm:

Thank you for releasing the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD. I'll not be needing these discs as I have no interest in the revised films.

I hope a full restored, anamorphic release of the original films will be considered. I would certainly be among the first in line to purchase that release. If not, this will probably be my first and last purchase of Star Wars DVDs.

Thank you again,
Alan

I kept the SE discs for the commentary which I listen to once in a long while. Otherwise they sit lonely and ignored in their cases.
