How Lucas can satisfy the fans.

I have to say after getting the OOT on DVD that I was presently surprised and I am happy with the new releases. That doesn't mean I am satisfied though. I have been reading a lot of stuff on various boards, people saying the fans will never be satisfied. This is so untrue it is very easy to satisfy the fans, if Lucas would just pay as much respect to the OOT that he does to the updates I would be more then satisfied. That means doing a transfer of the OOT using all the technology available but respecting the original as they were, it is that simple. Do you agree?

You wouldn't believe how simple it is!

All it requires is brand new transfer taken from original sources using current technology, original aspect ratio presented anamorphic, and colours that remain untampered with and true to the original release of the movie.

Heck, I dont even mind if there is a little bit of film dust and scratches as long as the definition is there, and we don't get the 'ghosting' and 'peculiar' grain that appears on this latest offering.

Oh and a choice of the original sound mixes, uncompressed, would be nice too!

Not too much to ask is it?

Well.....he can satisfy the fans by handing over his entire company over to me.

The first thing I would do is release a remastered, uber awesome set of the OOT.

Then I hand the company back to him and tell him there's nothing of worth in it anymore, so keep it.

See, that how I feel. I have a great Indiana Jones release. Now I want a good release of the OOT. That's it. No ill will, no animosity, he can do whatever he wants and everyone will be happy. Except that there is not yet a decent OOT release.

I agree except that I believe that we already have a good release, what we don't have is a great release. This current release met almost all my expectations other than the anamorphic video issue. The audio, picture, menus and artwork are all first rate as far as I'm concerned. Consider the fact that this came from a 10+ year old magnetic tape and that it was pretty much a straight transfer and I think we're lucky it turned out as good as it did. Do I wish it had received the Indiana Jones style cleanup and audio remastering it deserved, sure I do, but I can accept that I now have the OOT on DVD. It is made all the better considering the fact that for the last 10 years GL has told everyone that the OOT would never be available again for sale in any format, yet he relented and gave the fans what they asked for, the OOT on DVD. Did we put conditions on our request, not that I recall. We simply asked for the OOT on the digital DVD format so that it could be preserved for future generations and that is what we got. I for one am pleased and thankful to have this version that GL has released for the fans and should he see fit to ever re-release the OOT in a superior remastered edition then he'll get my money then too. I hope everyone here would join me in extending to everyone at Lucasfilm involved in bringing the OOT to DVD a heartfelt thank you. Maybe if we show a little gratitude GL will reward us the the great release the OOT deserves, until then I'll happily watch and enjoy the good release that we now have and were told we never would have.

We really shouldn't have to, should we?

There is a standard of quality that is expected these days when films are released on the DVD format, to which even the most obscure titles manage to attain.

George Lucas failed to meet that standard by quite a margin with this release, and I don't quite see how we should be overly grateful for paying premium prices for a non-premium, 'no effort' product.

Lucas must really hate these so called 'unfinished' works, as he has shown these movies absolutely no respect whatsoever with this release.

We have been thrown scraps from the table in a hope that it would keep us quiet for a while, that's all!

This dvd was not the act of a 'cheerful giver'!

For years this forum has been built upon the basis of preserving, and distributing (as much as its swept under the rug), the OOT and now that GL has given us the best available release of the OOT out there are we thanking him? No. We are slapping him in the face and accusing him of hate mongering his own product. Many members of this forum have put in long hours and received many pats on the back for releasing quality sets that, to be honest, just don't hold up anymore. In fact now seeing the sets we were all so high on in a side by side comparison with the new set shows you just how blurry and washed out many of them actually looked. None of the sets from Moth3r, Dr Gonzo, Citizen, the EditDroid group, Cowclops, DarkJedi or anyone else approaches the level of detail, sharpness or color quality that we are seeing in this new set. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down any of these individuals for their work, they all did the very best they could with what was available to them and are to be commended for their efforts but their efforts have now been surpassed. I won't be throwing away my different fan editions of the OOT, such as TR47, Cowclops v2, Moth3r, ocpmovie's Classic Editions, Editdroid, DarkJedi's various releases and more, but I just don't see myself watching them anymore now that I have the definitive release to this point in terms of audio and video quality available from a retail source. That said I am still awaiting the XØ Project and look forward to something that is sure to become the defacto standard for the OOT upon its release. And it may take the release of the XØ set to get GL to release the set that everyone seems to want but I think we've done well with this one. I mean afterall, its mission accomplished, the OOT is on DVD.

** The above forum entry was not in any way intended as an attack on any of the individual members of this forum that have put in the 100's and 1000's of hours preserving the OOT. And should anyone feel offended by my remarks then please accept my apologies in advance. I respect and thank you for your efforts and hope that this new release only inspires you to loftier heights and greater acheivements. **

Do you honestly think this is the best version that could have been presented? It's not, and they've said as much themselves. The only reason we didn't get a better release (cleaned up and anamorphic) is because Lucas wasn't willing to spend the necessary cash. Indy got a decent release. Back to the Future got a decent release. Hell, even Blade Runner is finally getting a decent release. Star Wars is about the only major title not to have quality versions of the original theatrical releases available (even the theatrical cut of Superman is due out soon).

Given the standards that most Star Wars fans seem to have, I think he could've satisfied them with a black-and-white transfer from an OTA broadcast and a mono soundtrack in Etruscan. I mean, we didn't specify that we wanted color or a comprehensible language, did we?

1. Lucas is giving us a non-anamorphic transfer in 2006. A cutting edge company giving a non-anamorphic DVD...come on!!!
2. The OUT is merely a "bonus disc" (not as important to me but still worth mentioning).
3. He bundles them with the SEs.
4. They are all sold seperately, making them more costly (I won't be too picky with this fact b/c one could be looking for that, though)
5. He is making SE fans that wanted the OUT buy the SE AGAIN! All the while, knowing he is going to put out an '07 set that will contain different SEs with more changes (or at the very least, the same SEs...again). Also, LFL spins (yet again) the "Limited" and "First and Only" cath phrases, basically forcing fans to buy this release because, "What if it isn't released again?!?"

There is nothing to thank that man for IMO, unless you enjoy being ripped off. The way I see it, there is no other way to look at this other than a total screw job (yet again). Say what you will about LOTR, etc., that have done similar things over the years, but at least you get A) a quality product right out of the gate and B) EACH release is quality and special in its won right!

Take ANY movie made from 1970-1990. Look at the dvd treatment of said movie if it was released in the last five years. That'll do it.

Well, I suppose that if it was in black and white, no one could complain about a botched SE color correction job, now could they? ^_~

Star Wars is the only series of movies I cherish. On the net I have tried and laboured to get the original trilogy in the non SE form of pre-1997. Now I can get these movies, granted for $90. Guys I've waited years for this and now I have a chance to have them on DVD. Thank you George Lucas, please don't release them again. It makes us all look overly obsessed. They're great movies though and I'd love to have the SE and 2004 and OOT on DVD. DVD is the best medium for all movies. Gotta love the quality of the DVD.

Thank you George Lucas!

See, here's the thing. To Lucas, the SEs are the films. So in his eyes, they have gotten proper treatment. Nevermind the color-changing lightsabers and the "deliberate creative decisions" that exist in the sound mix.
