German ANH DVD OOT audio track: Entire part of dialogue missing in Chapter 13

Well, it seems like I have to eat my own words regarding to being able to "just watch the movie". I just noticed while trying to just do that, that in chapter 13 of ANH when Luke, Han & Chewie wait for the elevator to the detention area, the announcements in the background are missing - as well as the lines "Ich kann in diesem Helm überhaupt nichts sehen (I can't see a thing in this helmet)", "Das wird nicht funktionieren (This is not gonna work)", "Warum hast du das nicht gleich gesagt? (Why didn't you say so before?)" and "Ich habe es gesagt (I did say so before)".

Now I'll have to create my own fan edit that at least keeps these lines from the german audio dub intact - and I thought buying this release would spare me that work.

I'm sure it's a deliberate creative decision which didn't alter the original film. Maybe they thought those lines wouldn't play to a German-speaking audience for some reason, or the original version never had those lines and you've just gotten used to George Lucas's preferred version of 2004 which does. In any case, Star Wars has never looked this good, and these are just bonus features.

(The sarcasm is strong in this one.)

Hehe, oh well. At least I was granted a few days of blessed ignorance were I didn't notice this and could just enjoy the original theatrical versions. So I'll revert back to watching ANH (or "Krieg der Sterne" as the movie was originally known in germany) on VHS again if I want to see it in german. Sigh.

Are the lines there in English? You obviously speak English, so isn't it better to hear the movies with the actors' real voices?

Yeah, I personally don't like foreign language dubs myself. Makes me feel like I'm missing something.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I can understand why you'd want to hear a movie in your native language, but I've always preferred watching foreign films with sub-titles, and hearing the actors' actual voices, even if I don't understand what they're saying.

same here, but have you ever tried to watch crouching tiger and read the subs at the same time?

The problem is that the German dubbing of Star Wars is cult for people, who have heard it for the past 29 years and have gotten used to it. You have to understand that in Germany, about 95%-99% of the movies are dubbed here, and this is the reason why some kind of culture has developed around this. I know its hard to understand, since most of the people here are English native speakers, and do most of the times not need to have something dubbed. This is why German dubbings are well made most of the time and Star Wars is one dub which was REALLY well made! If lines are missing in the German dialogue, Fox has really screwed up by providing us an inferior product, which is just plain intolerable.

Btw, since DVD, I watch all English speaking movies in their original language. It has vastly improved my English,

It was really funny watching "Das Boot" and "Lola rennt" in english dubbing.

The German dub of CTHD is better than the English dub.

Well, it is probably difficult to explain as you never grew up with dubbed movies. Here in germany the whole dubbing ordeal not only represents a huge regional industry - it has also become a kind of traditional thing. To be honest I am not sure how to convey to you what the german versions of these films mean to me - it is how I first saw them as a kid and even though I have also fallen in love with the original english dub, I still want to have the german version available as well. It's not merely a matter of what I got used to as a child - In my opinion, dubbing StarWars and getting it "right" is extremely difficult and it was so beautifully done back in the days of the original trilogy.

The special editions disrupted the magical balance of the original dubs, as the new lines for Darth Vader were not spoken by the same actor (who was still alive at that time), with the 2004 editions representing the most horrible experience with "the emperor's phone call" from ESB.

If you guys are interested I will open a seperate Thread with a few audio examples of the german voices, so you can decide for yourself (eventhough I am aware that it's difficult to judge the translations without knowing german - but at least you can judge the mood/acting and the sound of the voices).

The particular problem of the German OOT DVD is that they didn´t bother to restore the original German textcrawl, so no matter if these lines are back in, it is not the original German version.

Yes, but curiously enough they have made the effort and used the german logos for each film in the german language menus (with the exception of the first film, that is).

Looks like there's more missing in the German version. According to a post in a German DVD-forum the line: "Ich kann in diesem Helm überhaupt nichts sehen!" ("I can't see a thing in this helmet!") is absent as well.

Luckily I didn't buy it. Looks like, it's still up to us creating the "real" German OOT.

Uhh... that was amongst the things I reported as missing in my post.

I have sent a mail to 2oth Century Fox germany and intend to give them a call as well. I'm just curious how they will handle this (if they'll do at all).

I think there will be a need to do more things for a new German FP (probably a mod to the LS FP):

- Add the lines missing from the FOX GOUT release from ANH: the lines about the helmet and the missing word in C3POs sentence.
- Make an anamorphic picture.
- Add the old German textcrawls (the FOX GOUT release only has English textcrawls translated by subtitles) from the Laserdisc as multiangle.
- Add the English alternative textcrawl for Episode IV (without "A NEW HOPE" as seen in GOUT)
- Add all the bonus materials which FOX left out

I haven't noticed that one. To which scene are you referring?

The only other "soundbug" I noticed in the german dub is one of Luke's words during the lightsaber training sequence on the falcon is missing an "n" - like when an audio tape is broken at some point and your hear just some noise instead of the sound of the spoken letter.

Edit: Welcome to the boards!

Thanks!

About the missing 3PO-Word, there it is:

Chapter 6 -> 3PO and R2 in the desert
3PO to R2-D2: "Wie sind wir nur in diese jammervolle Situation geraten? Ich weiß es wirklich..."
The word nicht is missing.

Here is another German Audio Bug, exclusive for GOUT Release. All other Releases don't have this bug.

Episode IV - ANH German Dub:
Missing word at 0:56:51/0:56:52. Luke normally says: "Mit dem Schutzvisier runter kann ich nicht mal sehen, geschweige denn kämpfen."

Now you only hear: "Mit dem Schutzvisier runter kann nicht mal sehen,..." The word 'ich' is missing. And the pause between the words kann/nicht seems to be cut to zero seconds. Sounds awful.
