POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)

Author

 (Edited)

Okay, there are just WAY too many threads around here for me to keep track of to see who did/didn’t so please vote! Also, please fill us on about the reason(s) for your choice.

As for me, I didn’t buy them and still on the fence. I’ve avoided the stores too so not to give into temptation…kind of like an alcoholic attempting to kick the drinking habit by avoiding bars. Anyway, I didn’t buy them yet because I don’t want the SEs and I am a little annoyed about the whole anamorphic issue. I am sure something is in the works for the future but A) it will probably be on the next format and B) I don’t care about a big 6-movie boxed set next year because I have no use for the PTs and the SEs. I am not going to pay big $ for only 3 movies I want (the OUT). Even if they are anamorphic, is [what could be] $100+ worth it for 3 anamorphic movies?!? Hardly…

So as you can see, my dilemma is easy to see: pay much less now for a sub-par version I don’t necessarily want or agree with (but still tolerable for me mind you) or hang in there for a future (and probably more expensive) “maybe”?!?

Okay, enough from me and I sound like a broken record, I know LOL. So let’s hear what you did/didn’t do and why!

I got it because I'm not so sure Lucas will release the O-OT again even on next generation formats.

I thought the comic deal at Wal-Mart made up for re-buying the 2004 SE's, and overall aside from the fact the O-OT is not anamorphic, I think the picture quality is better than I had before on laserdisc. Certainly, not having to flip discs is almost worth the price of admission as far as I am concerned.

They are the best available home video edition of the OUT. Nuff said.

So far .

I only got return of the Jedi, because I Can't STAND the destroyed 2004 ending.

I also got the full screen version so the destroyed edition is inferior without question:
Destroyed version: 1.33:1 Pan and scan
Original version: 2.35:1 widescreen

plus, i too suspect there will be a high quality release of the OUT eventually. as this release clearly shows that Lucasfilm employees care about it. so if it doesn't come next year, then it will come when the company is in their hands.

Wow, many more No's than Yes's at this time, which is surprising to me to be honest.

Oh and I forgot to add that I don't even own the '04 SEs so it is not like I will be buying those again or anything if I would choose to get these.

I only bought "Star Wars". I was planning on buying all three, but I wanted to check out the quality first. I'm glad I did, because I was less than impressed with the picture quality. I'm glad that other people are enjoying them, but honestly, I can't see much difference between these and LD/rips. If there is a difference, it's negligible at best, and not worth the 30-some-odd dollars it'd take to get the other two. That being said, I'll probably be picking up ESB and ROTJ.

I'm still on the fence. I don't have any version of the OOT on dvd, just the DC lasers. I've never even seen the 2004 version (nor do i plan to). If i do decide to get them, it'll be for my birthday in the latter part of October. So what is the general consensus? Are these any better than the actual laserdiscs (swapping disc issues aside)?

Can't respond to the poll, as there's no option for buying less than "them."

Star Wars only for me. 'Cause it's the one I love 80,000 times more than the others. I have laserdiscs of the OUT Empire and Jedi, and slightly better picture quality of those movies which I rarely ever watch is not worth finding more space for my ever-expanding, out-of-control DVD collection.

I might have even said the same about Star Wars if it were not for the (reproduction of?) the original crawl.

(and yeah, I've said this in 12 threads already)

Bought Star Wars only. Very happy with it. Can't imagine I'll be buying anything else Star Wars ever again. This is all I ever wanted - an enjoyable, durable, copy of the 1977 movie I've loved since I first saw it in the theaters 29 years ago. I'll dupe this in case something happens to the store-bought copy.

I didn't. Neither did any of my friends or family that I know of.

I haven't bought them and I won't. If Lucas wants me to buy them, he'll do a proper release. Until then, I'll stick with my bootlegs.

I bought them, and I haven't changed my opinion from day one. I understand many fans have had bootlegs and laserdisks of the O-OT, but my bootlegs are always freezing up and I never had a Laserdisk player, so I wanted this release in any form.

I still say everyone who wants it should buy it, cause if this set outsells the 2004 SE, it would be the ultimate slap in the face to Lucas. It is inferior quality, yet it outsells the versions he loves? That is the ultimate wake up call to Lucas, that fans REALLY WANT these versions even though they are taking a step back in quality, and would prove that many fans who bought the 2004 set were not buying it cause they loved the SE, they just wanted the OT in any form on DVD.

I understand that this release with the inferior quality is a big middle finger by Lucas to the fans, but he has all the power so the only way you defeat the Emperor is to shove it in his face by outperforming the versions Lucas feels everyone should see.

If this set outsells the 2004 set, than Lucas has a huge question to answer to himself for future releases: Does he release the O-OT & SE fully restored in the same boxset everytime? If this boxset comes in with lackluster sales, then I believe you are making it alot easier for Lucas to answer that question.

Remember guys Lucas may be a jerk, but he is a smart businessman, and if he sees that this set sells more than the 2004 set, he is not that stupid to never release it again.

I bought them. I got the tin from Best Buy, which is absolutely gorgeous with original poster art on it and holds the DVD's perfectly.

I got them because I'm positive this is the last release on DVD. Why? Because the 30th anniversary set is next year. George released these so the unaltured trilogy fans could get what they want (sort of) and the 30th anniv. set can be for the fan boys that are gay for Lucas. Also, not putting the unaltured version in the set would be the perfect way to say "Fuck you" to all us fans.

But I mainly got them because I don't really need anamorphic, I just need decent video quality that makes me feel I'm in a theater. These versions do just that. I've never seen Star Wars in a theater, and only saw the OOT for the first time last May, but I fell in love with them and I think these releases feel like a theatrical experiance, even though I've never seen it on the big screen.

So I'd reccomend them. The cover and disc art is great too.

AND SEND THE '04 DISCS BACK TO LUCAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

What are you talking about?!? My $100+ figure was just an estimate on what the '07 box set may cost.
