I'm not sure, but aren't most of the shots from the 97-SE the same as the 2004-SE, except for the color-corrections? I know some shots have been recomposed, but maybe using the chroma from the 97-SEs and layering the luma from the 2004-SEs on top of it migh work for most of the scenes. This way you get all the image detail from the "restored" transfer, minus the crappy colors.
