Name the film you’d LOVE to recut if the deleted /rare footage existed.

For me it would be “Rocky” Sylvester Stallone stated on the commentary track for “Copland” that there was alot of extra/deleted footage shot for Rocky that was " long gone " …I could have cried…

I can’t wait till December 22nd for Rocky 6 !!!

Neat idea for a thread! It's a tough one though...

The Exorcist III instantly springs to mind. It would be great to see a version that conforms to Blatty's original cut (prior to studio intervention), titled Legion. (Mark Kermode claims to have been shown it by Blatty on a workprint VHS.) It's one of the most underrated horror films of the last few decades, and I'd love to see it get due attention.

Serenity with all the deleted scenes, by which I don't just mean the ones on the DVDs, but the scenes/alternate takes in the workprints shown early last year. (They all turn up in the unedited script in the Visual Companion book.) I saw a test screening in London in February 2005 and even now clearly remember footage such as a more graphic shot of Mal getting stabbed by The Operative that I'd kill to see again.

And, last but not least, "Director's Cuts" of Sam Raimi's Crimewave and Darkman would be awesome too.

The uncut extended version of Superman IV. Supposedly there is a much longer cut that is better than the final, but the footage hasn't seen the light of day since one or two showings around the time the movie was released. I think I've heard that this version is lost and won't make it to the big Superman boxset due out in November, but I hope thats wrong.

I recall a rumor that they shot the entirety of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and then edited it down to movie length. If that's true then a fan edit of the whole darn book could be very cool.

The Wizard of Oz with ALL Deleted scenes in. If anyone has the recent three disc or two disc release, you'll know that the only scene that still has footage to go with it is the extended scarecrow dance, and it's really a shame. All of the scenes should never have been cut...But its still amazing that the only deleted scene that still has footage has been kept in the same quality as the movie itself. The movie looks like it was made yesterday on DVD, and so does the scarecrow dance.

Anyway, I know there's an edit of the film with the scarecrow dance, but I'd love to see all the deleted scenes in there. But, sadly, it's impossible...

Well, all the scenes from that cut will be on November's release, but not IN the movie. They'll be bonus material. But they will be remastered and in Anamorphic Widescreen, so a fan edit should surface very quickly.

I personally would love a longer cut of Terence Malick's The Thin Red Line with all of the actors he deleted (among them Viggo Mortensen, Billy Bob Thorton and also Adrian Brody has lines!).

Orson Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons ..... I've going to give it a go pretty soon with storyboard illustrations, surviving stills, the Criterion laserdisc presentation of Welles' radio play, and this book.

Supposedly the studio sent the full version to Welles in Brazi to editl, then they promptly chopped it up for release (142 to 88 minutes,) and burned the rest. Next time I'm in Brazil I'll have to check the pawn shops.

Criterion Projects done: She's Gotta Have It, The Princess Bride, The Fisher King

In Progress Criterions: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (99% done), Taxi Driver (90% done), Citizen Kane (50% done), Othello (99.99% done)

Possibly coming next: Ghostbusters, The Magnificent Ambersons (the theatrical cut, a reconstruction according to Prof. Carringer's script analysis, and the colorized version)

From what I've read, they didn't burn the deleted footage, but rather vaulted it. It ended up at a Paramount vault, but no one knows what happened to it.

The PG-13 version of Titan A.E. Several years ago, I corresponded a bit with a former employee of the now defunct FOX Animation studio who sold me some drawings from the film. She told me how the film was toned down in places to ensure a PG rating, and showed me frames from scenes that aren't on the DVD. With everything down to the animator's office supplies sold or auctioned off when Fox closed up shop, you'd think someone out there has a workprint! (Probably with the original "Planet Ice" title still on it.)

It seems like the DVD might have a 'branching' feature to watch Superman IV with the scenes placed in at the appropriate places, see this DVD feature list.

I haven't ever heard of the footage going to Paramount, but...

...from ambersons.com/FAQ
"The cut footage was kept in film vaults for a few months, and was eventually burned due to a shortage of storage space. There are lots of stills from the cut footage, and the movie trailer (which is on the VHS tape from Turner Classic Movies) has a few seconds of film that isn't iin the movie."

There was always the suspicion that the studio vindictively destroyed the footage, but according to the Carringer book I linked above, additional footage for Hitchcock's Suspicion also went into the fire during the same purge, and since the brass of RKO had changed during that time, it's unlikely that this move was anything more than just unfortunate house cleaning.

I'm interested in hearing more about it though, if you can recall the source of the Paramount bit. My PM's are on.

I'd do what I HOPE disney is planning to do with the platinum relase of "Fantasia":

1. 5Oth anniversary theatrical edition of Fantasia, with the Original voice of Deems Taylor giving the shortened narrations that don't spoil the whole segments before you watch them, but with an uncut Pastoral segment (black centaurs and all) and with the remastered audio of the DVD, plus Rachel Field's Lyrics for Schubert's "Ave Maria"(which is my second favorite movie ending of all time next to the OOT RotJ) so I could put them in subtitles.

2. the 1982 version with the re-recorded Irwin Kostal score (for comparison)

That'd be cool. But I'd go without the 1982 version for them to put in the 60th anniversary edition, just to get a feel for the original narration.

Actually, they could do the original narration segments as bonus features. I'd love to have disc 2 be everything pertaining to Fantasia from the anthology set, and a shitload of new stuff. That'd be cool.

It also needs some better remastering on the picture. "Platinum" style remastering. Even though the platinum editions have faultered in bonus features ever since "Aladdin" the remastering has been top notch. I'd love them to have the bonus features experiance Snow White had on the DVD's again though. That was a great DVD.

If it's still out there, and if Charles de Lauzirika still has the footage in all those boxes of the negatives he has, I'd like to see Alien 3 with every single scrap of footage included. Apparently there was a scene shot where the chestburster comes out when Ripley is standing on the platform at the end, and there may have been other little snippets of footage not seen.

Since it sounds like "lost" footage is fair game, I'm gonna have to shoot for the 10-hour version of Greed by Von Stroheim.

I'd always have loved to see Alien 3 with every single scrap of footage put back into the film. I know from reading online comments by the DVD producer of the Alien Quadrilogy set that there he was limited by what footage he could find at Fox. I know that from the comments on the DVD set, there had been a much longer version screened that was almost over-the-top violent. Couple that with all the workprint footage that never made it to the assembly cut, and the rumored scenes that might have been shot (Ripley fighting the alien in the "basement" and it refusing to kill her, the chestburster going from Newt to Ripley in the EEV), and you could have had a very interesting alternate cut.

Man, this is an old topic.

THE BEATLES "Let It Be"

I want to see the director Michael Lindsay-Hogg's first cut of "Let It Be" when it was still titled "Get Back"! So much film was shot for this documentary, and yet it's way to short as released. The original T.V. cut was said to be about 2 1/2 hours, and I would like to see them release a video box set of that version with ALL of the un-edited footage they still have in the vaults. That fight of George and Paul during the released film, (when they had been working on "Two of Us") is a real hack job, and it changes the way it truly happened. It makes it look like it was Paul that made George mad and want quit the group a few days later, but that's not true. George was having BIG problems with John at the time {Over John's hard drug use, Yoko, his withdrawing from talking with the band and his negative attitude to George' s new songs} , and the film as released does not show any of this. If this film was shown without being so cut up, people would see how Paul was fighting to keep the band together.

The film was edited in the summer, as The Beatles were back in the studio working on Abbey Road, Lindsay-Hogg recalls. "We did a rough cut and screened it for them, the same day Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, whenever that was.

"It was a much longer cut originally. There was an hour more. There was much more stuff of John and Yoko, and the other three didn't really think that was appropriate because they wanted to make it a 'nicer' movie. They didn't want to have a lot of the dirty laundry, so a lot of it was cut down. So then we ended up with an hour and a half."
