How about someone explain all of these abbreviations to me?

My friends don't even know what PT and OT mean! Prequel Trilogy and Original Trilogy, I know.

First we had OOT, meaning ORIGINAL Original Trilogy, right?

for some unknown reason, it became:

OUT- Original Unaltered Trilogy I guess. That's funny. OUT is a word. The opposite of IN. So I don't like it. OOT is better. Kinda like the sound an owl makes, but at least it's not a real word. Why did you dummies decide to change OOT to OUT anyway?

Then we now have GOUT. Ain't that a disease or something? What the hell does the G stand for? George? STOP CHANGING THE ABBREVIATIONS! Whoever's idea that was is worse than Mr. Lucas with the constant changing. At least I (and I know I'm in the minority on this website) like George's changes.

I'm officially changing PT and OT to T1 and T2. Trilogy 1 (it comes first) and Trilogy 2. Copyright 2006 MarioXB. The End. Or not.

Your whole post isn't even on topic and to top that off you call us a bunch of dummies...nice.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

The term OUT comes from the Lucas marketing machine. It stands for Original Unaltered Trilogy, which is their definition of what these 2006 DVDs are.

Since the OUTs are not the true theatrical editions which Lucasfilm is advertising them to be, we have officially begun calling them the GOUT, which stands for George's Original Unaltered Trilogy. In essence, it refers to the 2006 DVD editions of the 1993 laserdisc versions. Check out the last couple pages of the X0 Project thread for how this came about.

To answer your question eros, nobody has posted any high quality screenshots from the R1 release yet, so it's hard to make a determination. I did not buy the DVDs, so I can't even give you my own opinion.

Since the R2 is an upscaled NTSC version I would say get the R1 since it doesn't have PAL speedup and the image is probably the same quality.

Well, to be fair, I did stay on topic. The topic was "So, a simple question..." which I also asked. I don't like PAL at all ever. If you ask me, I go by whatever the standard is in Japan. And that's NTSC, which also happens to be USA's standard. Japan will always know best when it comes to technology.

1. You were off topic, because this topic wasn't about your question, it was about eros' question.

2. If Japan always knows best when it comes to technology, then explain to me their reasoning behind pushing the PS3 release date back 4 months in Europe.

Get whatever's local for you. NTSC and PAL both have issues, neither will be significantly better then the other.

Are you from Japan eros? Because I thought with R1 or R2 you meant NTSC or PAL... (and since Japan is R2 NTSC...)

In another thread when THX used acronyms eros didn't understand, eros called him a "lazy cunt."

Now eros is attacking marioxb for asking him to explain his acronym ?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Yeah! And I was trying to be funny with the T1 and T2 things. I know they typically stand for Terminator, that's why it's funny.

And that's true about the NTSC/ PAL thing too. You didn't specify, PAL or NTSC. R2 Japan is NTSC and R2 UK is PAL. I say buy whatever disc that's from where you live. The only reason I ever import a DVD is if it's not widescreen in the US or there is a better version, like a director's cut or better special features in another country. I can't stand PAL anything and it's always the very last resort for me. I had the RoboCop: Prime Directives, Cleopatra 2525, Super Mario Bros. and The Wizard PAL releases when I thought they'd never come out elsewhere. I get stuff Japan more frequently, because it's NTSC. I have the Scream director's cut from Japan, and Vegas Vacation, since the original US release of that was pan and scan, while Japan was widescreen.

Didn't want the thread to start degenerating into nonsense and off topic bitching, which is all too common around here at the moment. In answer to question I'm in the UK so Pal R2 or NTSC R1.

Where did this idea that the masters are NTSC or NTSC resolution come from anyway?
Author

It came from the fact that if you compare the PAL [1] & NTSC [2] DVD [3] caps [4], you can easily see that they are from the same source. Further investigation shows signs of scaling on the PAL version.

[2] National Television System Committee

Can anybody confirm if there would be any Interpolation within a PAL image that has been upscaled from a NTSC master, ie. the use of approximated pixels, that are not on the NTSC master, to achieve PAL resolution?

That's what I was afraid of.

I guess at least with the NTSC version you are getting only what was on the master, and not any 'guess work' image information used to bump up the resolution for PAL?

Author
Time
Right. But if you play it back in a PAL system, you can't avoid interpolation.
Author

So, the PAL system would still need to upscale the NTSC dvd, and in turn introduce it's own interpolation, for playback at 720x576 .

Thanks for the insight THX!

after looking at those caps of the NTSC version I think the PAL is probably the best way to go, although it's zoomed in very slightly compared to the NTSC it looks neater without the black borders at the sides.

The "black borders at the sides" will be present on both NTSC and PAL dvd if played on a widescreen TV.

The dvd will not be able to determine the size/width of your TV due to the 'non-anamorphic' issue, so you will
have to manually 'tell' the television to scale the image to the width of the screen to omit the black side bar effect.

what if I use my widescreen tft PC monitor to watch them in full screen, will I still see black borders at the sides on the PAL versions?

It is resized, but it has been resized very well from the screenshots I compared. Resizing both to anamorphic would have been even better (and would have eliminated there being one that wasn't resized) - but as it stands there's not a significant difference. All the detail is still in the PAL version, but is just slightly softer. Then again, there's more detail in the SE.
