SW.com: "First and ONLY TIme"

I didn't know what thread to put this in so I figured I would create another one so those on the fence (like me *cough*) can read it and see what they think...maybe this will push you to buy it? Or maybe you think this is more marketing hype, as we have heard "only" in the past before? Another clever play on words maybe?

Now on DVD: The Original Star Wars Trilogy
September 12, 2006

In commemoration of today's release of the Star Wars Trilogy as individual movie DVDs -- including the original unaltered trilogy being released on DVD for the first and only time -- starwars.com has compiled some of the content highlights from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi which have appeared on the site over the past ten years. Click on the links below to begin your journey to the original galaxy far, far away...

Oh great. Just perfect. Well then, this could be the death of the OOT.

I have no doubt that the OUT will never be released by LFL/FOX again...

on DVD, which is all that is claimed above. Whether they'll do a next-gen format release remains to be seen, but it will be years, not months, away, if ever.

Bright little ray of sunshine, aren'y you? You're probably right, though .

That was my thinking too, that it is a play on words and we will see it again...just on the next format. With each item I read, the more I think LFL is already looking ahead and not botheirng with the DVD format really. REALLY dumb move IMO, but at least not putting a lot of money into an OUT release it makes SOME sense to me now (business-wise that is).

Okay, I am leaning *slightly* towards buying them now I would rather have non-anamorphic DVDs than nothing. If I would buy them, in a few months I am going to try to sell the SEs discs at a yard sale or something and try to recoup some of the cost (or send them back...hmmm...). When the winner of the next format war finally comes to light and it takes off, I doubt very much I will be upgrading right away, so another OUT ourchase could be years away for me. MY VHS copies are quickly wearing down from watching them and also from what time does to tape so I need something that is going to hold up...

Mike O, I am still very optimistic and feel that we will see the OUT again, it's just that I am doubting very much now that it will be on DVD.

Alas, this is proably correct. My optimism is waning. You know, I ask so little in life .

1. I've always been one to call a spade a shovel, so I'll be the one to put this out there: Lucasfilm, and Lucas in particular, have no qualms about lying to hype up a product. "Never available," "not until," "last time," "always intended," "definitive," "original vision," ... when you hear these words, you know they are lying. (Or, to be charitable, telling the truth from a certain point of view.)

2. However, they may well be telling the truth this time. DVD, although not on its way out, is rapidly being complemented by potential successor technologies. Microsoft and Sony will be putting out their HD DVD and BD players by the end of the year, Amazon and Apple are both pushing downloadable content, and VOD is becoming ubiquitously available through cable providers. By the time Lucas runs out of 3D re-re-releases and TV shows to market, he'll put the O-OT on one of these formats.

3. I wouldn't put it past them to do a full restoration and release that claiming it's an altered version of the O-OT. That's just the kind of TF.N logic that fanboys seem to like.

4. If there is never again an official release of the O-OT, just download X0 or the GOUT and send a $45 check to Lucasfilm.

Lies on SW.com. Well, maybe not lies yet, but they will become lies when LFL flip-flops again.

Is this release our only hope? No. There will be another.

Hahahahaha....yes, it will be released again. It's always released again. If there's money to be made...well, you know the rest.

"first and only time ON DVD". They went out of their way to put that last part in there. Such a legal way of writing: "on dvd." So as to still be accurate when they release it in HD in a few years. I guess this rules out the current possibility of seeing the OOT remastered in the 2007 box set, although not definitively by any means; i can totally see them including it and then explaining "at the time the previous statement was made, we had no plans, but after seeing the success of the 2006 release we decided to go ahead..."

They've outrighted lied to us so many times, I REALLY wouldn't take this seriously...

I hope that y'all are right, I really do.

If I had a dollar for EVERYTIME it was the "Last Time Available ______" (insert format or ominous emphasizing adverb here word here).

Relax, it's not the last time on laserdisc (according to the THX set), last time on VHS (every release), last time in the world (paraphrase of the Faces DVD set), or last time to see (pick your release).

As long as there is a market, or someone waiting to raid GL's archives after his death and license to Criterion, these movies will persist.

I hope so. I just wonder how long we will have to wait and what it will take.

Lucasfilm is comprised of damn liars and I don't believe that for a second. Lucas himself is the biggest liar of the entire bunch. Even if that staement is true though, an HD format works for me. Even if the theatrical versions are never released again, I still don't give a damn. Star Wars means more to me than some stupid format release. I don't ever need an upgraded format if George Lucas wants to be a weirdo about it. It doesn't hurt me.

Mike, have you seen the new DVDs yet? They're really quite good, IMO. You should cheer up!

Very true. I knew years ago that the OUT would probably be released again, and it has, and it will be released, as long as there is scratch to be made. For that reason, I've only bought the bonus disc from the SW 2004 set (cost me $8 dollars CAD on Ebay) and I will wait for the 30th Anniversary Saga set before I make a conclusive decision on whether to buy the OUT on DVD or not.

Beat me to it. Next year is the 30th Anniversary.

1993 Remastered for LD and VHS, plus Widescreen available -
was to prime the pump for 1997 Special Edition -
was to prime the pump for 1999 Episode I

This is the same. 2004 super quality and special features DVD's -
was to prime the pump for 2006 OOT Edition -
was to prime the pump for something in 2007, big 30th Anniversary blast

The same line claims it's the "Original Theatrical Release" of Star Wars, and that is a lie. So why put any stock in the veracity of the second half of the untruthful statement?

Actually it's because the next time we see it, it'll be part of a seamless branching (HD/BR/Standard) DVD.

Which would have made sense from the outset really.

When is everyone going to realize that virtually everything that comes out of LFL and their spokespeople, like that lap dog Sansweet, is a pile of steaming shite? Their entire purpose is to lie to you in order to get you to shell out more of your money to them. They know, however, that so much of their audience is practically brain dead, that they don't even bother to try and lie well or convincingly. The one thing you can count on to be true from LFL is that whatever they say is a lie. That much is true. All else is bullshit. As long as they can make a buck they will keep on churning out endless versions of the SE AND the OT...marketed with a different title for the box set, or on HD DVD instead of regular DVD, or whatever the hell...anything to call it "a new release". Lies. All lies. Once I get a respectable and professionally produced version of the OT treated with the respect and preservation that it deserves out of LFL...after that the Earth can open up and swallow George Lucas and his company and I wouldn't care less.

Actually, if Mother Earth swallowed them up now, the rights to the Trilogy would pass on to someone else. Maybe someone more inclined towards servicing customers. Now, lest the admin get in here and jump on me for George-hating, I'm not suggesting the Earth swallow up George Lucas. I'm just thinking about what would happen if she did. And I've gotta admit, it would be advantageous for us.
