2004 DVD crap-o-la

I have to admit, and not ashamed to, with the new discs out today I just saw the 'new fixed' stuff from the 2004 DVDs and of course with the material from the '97 SE for the first time. (I did see SE in the theatre, but just saw the super enhanced DVDs for the first time) And I have to say no self-respecting Wars fan should have ever bought the '04 discs or watch them. They are so bad. I couldn't stop shaking my head when watching Jedi Rocks, or Hayden's head on the spirit of Anakin. Or Han steppin on Jabba's tale. How many times does he have to say 'Han my bookie". C'mon why is Luke's sabre green when he is training in the falcon? And why is Tatooine celebrating when the Empre falls? And how horrible is the new dialouge between the emp and Vader in ESB. "The young rebel who destroyed the Death star is the off spring of Anakin Skywalker" Now that was a great idea!
HAAAAAAAAA

HOW BAD IS THE EWOK SONG AT THE END!!!!!!!!!???????????

It's all pretty damned bad. No bones about it.

There is no lingerie in space…

C3PX said: Gaffer is like that hot girl in high school that you think you have a chance with even though she is way out of your league because she is sweet and not a stuck up bitch who pretends you don’t exist… then one day you spot her making out with some skinny twerp, only on second glance you realize it is the goth girl who always sits in the back of class; at that moment it dawns on you why she is never seen hanging off the arm of any of the jocks… and you realize, damn, she really is unobtainable after all. Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

My plan is simple...
give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar...

I am shipping my boxed set copies of George's ongoing "Masterpiece-Vision" back to him!

Hmm, now imagine if all of the other disgruntled SW-loyalists did the same....
....do you thing he'd get the message?

I just bought the DVD set of the original & 2004 edition of SW.
Putting the original Hildebrandt painting on the 2004 edition DVD and crappy artwork on the original DVD?!?!
That was the last straw.

I like the updated Ewok song, surprisingly. It seems to fit as a much more joyous and uplifting song to me than the other OUT song. When I saw ROTJ for the first time, I heard the song and just said "What the hell? What is this crap music?"

I think the SE's, while not perfect, are heads and shoulders above and beyond the quality of the O-OT.

1) Jedi Rocks is cheesey, but so much easier to believe than the older "rod puppet" Sy Snootles could have ever hoped to have been, and more hot alien chicks seals the deal for me.

2) I don't see a problem with Jabba saying "Han My Bookie" multiple times if he wants to.

3) I think it's funny that Han steps on Jabba's tail, and the new Jabba used for the 04 version looks even better than the '97 version.

4) Luke's saber on the falcon always had a green tint to it, it's just the amazing picture transfer found on the 2004 SE makes it stand out more.

5) The new Emperor scene in Empire is entirely better than the old one, dialogue, performance, everything about it is better now.

6) I don't see any reason why Tattoine shoulnd't celebrate the return of democracy to the galaxy.

7) I much prefer the new ending music. It feels more like a whole Galaxy celebrating instead of just the Ewoks.

Sure it's not perfect. But I say it's still closer to perfect than they ever were before.

The original ewok song is so cool. I used to have the ROTJ record when I was a kid. What was, no is, so great about it is the way that the end sort of unravels and segues into the theme for the credits so seamlessly. Perfect. Of all the changes made for the SEs, RotJ got it the worst. Jabba's palace becomes just another Pixar-esque kid's movie. Complaints aside, I've always said I would have no problem with the changes as long as the OUT was also available. In fact, I say change as much as possible. It's fun. The offensive part was attempting to replace the real movies with that trash.

Personally, I'll take pixar over unconvincing rod puppets any day of the week.

But now he has released the O-OT, so we can both be happy.

Any self respecting star wars collector needs to keep these 2004 se's because you just know they will change again at some point, and this is the only official archive of this version. The bootlegs of the OUT and Se's whether standard or hi-def have no future monetary value because they are bootlegs (worthless).

The '04 were just an officially released workprint of what is to come IMO.

So were all the previous versions.

I like the new Ewok ending. Except the appearance of Naboo, Tatooine and Cloud City though. The original yub nub is still cool, but the new Ewok song i think is appropriate for the SE and one of the few changes that actually adds to the film in a positive way i think.

I agree about the new music - I like it. Just a shame the rest of the additions werent up to scratch!

Although I've stated I prefer the new music, after watching it again, I think I have to change my position. The Ewok song reinforces the whole theme of Return of the Jedi, which is that if you have the will, nothing is impossible. The Ewoks had no technology or sophistication, but they had the will to bring down the empire's troops, and they did. Luke was horribly mismatched against the empire and Darth Vader, but overcame the challenge and made Vader see the light simply because of his willpower. The rebels did not have the army nor the supplies that would seem neccesary to beat the empire, but they were strong willed and defeated the empire nonetheless.

The Ewok song gives us one last reinforcment of this theme. The Ewoks song and thier celebration is low-key, just as thier assault was on the empire. But they overcome that and manage to have a great celebration.

And on a less metaphorical note, how would word have reached all those other star system's so fast. No one even witnissed the emporer's demise except Luke and the dead Vader.

Ewok song? Never heard of it.

I hear ya, I saw the DVD release on TV a year ago. It was crap! Hayden's head put on Shaw's body. Eek, that Hayden was sure creepy there. In Ep II and III he was like Frankenstein, a really angry Frankenstein!

I agree--the O-OT is pure crap. I'm disappointed in George Lucas because he caved in to the demands of the extremist fanboys by putting out the inferior originals on DVD

What the hell are you talking about? "Jedi Rocks" -- well, it simply ROCKS!!! I love how the entire sequence looks like it was taken out of Monsters, Inc.
5) The new Emperor scene in Empire is entirely better than the old one, dialogue, performance, everything about it is better now.
I agree--"The Son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi" is one of the worst lines of dialogue in cinematic history.
6) I don't see any reason why Tattoine shoulnd't celebrate the return of democracy to the galaxy.

I thought that having Jar Jar scream "weesa free!" was a nice added touch
7) I much prefer the new ending music. It feels more like a whole Galaxy celebrating instead of just the Ewoks.

I love the new age music at the end, it's simply exquisite. I'm also glad that they took out the ghost of that OLD FART, Sebastian Shaw.
Sure it's not perfect. But I say it's still closer to perfect than they ever were before.

I look forward to more Special Editions in the future, so that I can buy them over and over and over again.

HaHahahaha.

Ok, um ... Yub Nub rules and that's all there is to it.

(And Jedi Rocks is not just a lame song compared to Lapti Nek, but the music match to the first Rancor Pit victim is just totally lost).

RotJ did indeed get the worst of the SE revisions. It's frelling unwatchable!

(Jedi not being the most watchable Star Wars movie in the first place)

To quote Chefelf:

"Political inner-workings aside, the end of Return of the Jedi: Special Edition presents us with a rather silly montage that shows celebrations on various planets ten minutes after the Death Star blows up. We get to see Tatooine, which never fell under the direct jurisdiction of the Republic or the Empire, celebrate with great joy. It must be very rewarding for them to know that there will now be another new government that will ignore it and allow its human slavery trade to continue, unhindered by meddling politicians and their silly laws."

I don't see a problem with Jabba saying "Han My Bookie" multiple times if he wants to.

Jabba can say whatever he wants.

Luke's saber on the falcon always had a green tint to it, it's just the amazing picture transfer found on the 2004 SE makes it stand out more.

Actually, it was supposed to be blue, but the mastering on the DVD was messed up.

The new Emperor scene in Empire is entirely better than the old one, dialogue, performance, everything about it is better now.

I think it sort of distrupts the flow.

Personally, I'll take pixar over unconvincing rod puppets any day of the week.

You find the Yoda puppet unconvincing? I just think that the CG looks out of place in the scrappy universe of the OOT.

We all thought so until the quality issue came out.

You are joking, right?

the increase of the differing versions of the se is exponential now...
the 04 dvd's are 90% jarring but somewhat watchable once, with all the worst stuff in ROTJ. But I have one question-why the hell did I ask for these for christmas 2 years back??

The 2004 version is indeed crap! Don't tell me Jar Jar's voice is in ROTJ... No! It can't be true! That's impossible! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

The opening crawl states Vader is obsessed with Skywalker. He launches thousands of probes across the galaxy to find him and follows his instinct that "Skywalker is with them," launching a full ground assault on Hoth -- based on a picture of a shield generator. He sends the bulk of the Imperial Fleet into an asteroid field after the Millenium Falcon all to find Skywalker. You think it's good dialoge when, after all this, he he is surprised to learn about "The offspring of Anakin Skywalker?" You think, after all this time, expense, and yes, mentioning Skywalker by name, he says "How can this be?" is better than the old dialogue?

There are few parts of the 2004 editions are dont think are all that great, I have only seen Jedi twice and the others about three times and I havent watched for well over a year, I cant see myself watching these ever again unless they are on TV, because if I want to watch the SE at anytime the SE versions the guys on here are producing I prefer, I got them as a birthday gift so I dont want to get rid of them so I just keep them in my collection.
