Idea: for... Custom Made DVD Sets

Ok, maybe this is the wrong place to post this thread, but it seems to be the most appropriate place. This thread (and I’m sorry if this has been done before on another section of the site) would be for posting a list of your custom made DVD sets so that others can take advice for building thier sets. What I mean by custom sets doesn’t mean DVD’s you made into sets, a collection you’ve made of official and/or non-official DVD’s.

I’ll start with my Lord of the Rings custom set for an example.

FOR ALL THREE FILMS:

4-Disc Extended Version
-Extended Version of Film Split Across Two Disc with 6.1 DTS sound. Best version of film avaliable.
-2 Discs of Bonus Features

Disc 2 of Theatrical Cut Release
-Includes Trailers and featurettes/documentaries not found on the Extended DVD bonus material. Great Disc to add to the collection.

Disc 2 of Limited Edition
-Includes the Costa Botes documentary. A comprehensive look at the trilogy without all the fluff narration. Just footage.

EXTRA NOTES:
-That’s how I’d do the set. You could also add the theatrical version, if you’d like it. I peronally find the Extended Editions vastly superior, and don’t need the theatrical version, but for anyone who wants it because they like both or because they want a more comprehensive set, add it. I would NOT reccoemend you use Disc 1 of the limited editions if you want both versions of the films. It won’t look as good as the seperate Extended/Theatrical release discs, and you’ll lose the 6.1 sound track. Plus, it’s one of those two sided discs, and that’s really all that needs to be said on why not to use the limited edition version of the movie.

PACKAGING:
I would use the packaging for the 4-Disc extended editions. Keep all the 4 discs in their specified place. Take the other two (or three) discs and put them both in a seperate paper disc sleeve. Put these sleeves in the flap right next to movie part one, where the booklet is. They fit very well. And now you have a comprehensive six (or seven) disc set for all three lord of the rings films. For anyone keeping track, that’s eighteen or twenty-one discs total.

So with each post, you should comment on someone else’s list or make your own modifications too it, and/or add a new guide to making a custom DVD set. Make sure to specify where you get all discs so people can know where to get them if they want to build them.

Hold on! Stop the presses! You have these?:

animated TV show
Live Action TV show
Bill & Teds Excalent Musical

I'd like to have those! Where'd you get them? What is the musical? Do you have both versions of the animated series, I think it aired on Fox and CBS, both with different theme songs. I kinda remeber one of them,

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures, it's a party, that's for sure.
So outragious, something, something,
it happens almost every day

something like that

I have (had) a little blue box shaped like a phone booth that came in a cereal box that was from the animated series.

With my LOTR sets (I don't have the limited ones.. yet.. maybe) I actually do like having the theatrical versions as well. I hate cardboard boxes and anything other than a standard DVD keepcase. So I make special covers for those crazy boxes and put them on the shelf, emoty. Even if it's something that had regular cases inside it, like Indiana Jones or Star Wars. I don't like the box getting damage, so it goes by itself empty.

Anyway, I have three disc cases that are the same size as the one disc cases. For LOTR, I have the movie series themselves in one set of cases and the bonus stuff in other cases. Like this for each movie:

For example- FotR: theatrical, extended discs 1 and 2 in one case (3 discs)
FotR: bonus discs from the theatrical and extended versions (3 discs as well)

I thought this was for fantasy boxsets, those are the ones I would love.

All musical info etc can be found here.... http://www.billandted.org/
But I am working on the Matrix 1, just have to buy path of Neo and burn the spoofs 1.

Not fantasy box sets, box sets that we've made that anyone could compile.

Here's another set I've recently compiled.

Now, this set is much more broad then the others, because there are lots more discs (or different versions of these films on DVD) that could go in the set.

STAR WARS TRILOGY----5 Disc Tin

It starts with the basic Best Buy Tin with all three movies in there. (Keep in mind, it doesn't have to be a tin. Any Star Wars box that holds three regular size cases works.) For all three movies, take out the 2004 discs. Replace the 2004 ANH disc with "Star Wars: A Musical Journey." Replace the ROTJ 2004 disc with the Star Wars Bonus Disc from the 2004 release. Take the booklet that came with this and put it behind the ROTJ booklet. On ESB, simply get rid of the disc one holder that swings around, and put the disc in the back.

As I said before, this set is very interchangable. If you haven't bought the 9/12 release, you can use your bootlegs and 2 disc cases. If there are other bonus discs you have, use them. If you don't like one the discs mentioned above, don't use it. Custom cover art should be used if you prefer it.

As for packaging. I said earlier that any box will do, and that's true, but in MY personal set that I've listed out, I use the tin and it is very, very nice. Poster art all around, durable, and fits nicely on a shelf. The films are stored safely. So this is how I'd reccomend it, but you can use my custom set as a basis for yours. That's what this thread is about. People post thier sets, exactly as they have them, and then put side notes for ways to change them. Some people might go with the formula written out, others might mix it up. Others might flame it, but it'll be cool to see how everyone makes thier own sets and help creativity in building your own sets.

I have the new Apocalypse Now: TCD set with the workprint version and the Hearts Of Darkness documentary tucked into the dossier case. The new release was severely underwhelming, but with those two pieces of AN lore, I think it really can be called a "Complete Dossier".

Lawrence of Arabia: 6-Disc Epic Collection

DISC ONE & TWO
These are the two discs from the Superbit release, which contains superior video and audio.

DISC THREE & FOUR
The original 2-disc Limited Edition. Though the video quality is inferior to the Superbit's it's still worth owning for it's wealth of DVD-ROM content and supplemental content on disc two.

DISC FIVE
The "A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia" film, starring Ralph Fiennes as T.E. Lawrence.

DISC SIX
The PBS documentary, "Lawrence of Arabia: Battle for the Arab World".

Wow good idea! Too bad I bought the bundle on starwars.com with the Topps collector card rather than the one with the cool tin.

for Now, I have OCP's classic editions grouped in the silver box that came with the 2004 release of the trilogy, with Walt Disney's "Fantasia" taking the spot of the OT bonus disc. I call it my "victory" set, as Fantasia's ending is my second favorite movie ending next to the Original RotJ.

(I watch the entire Saga in the week leading up to the anniversay of the day in which 3 very mean former teachers of mine got fired, finishing with RotJ and Fantasia on the day itself)

I'll place the offical 2004 version of empire into the set, once I re-do the ESB case to reflect it, as that is the one 2004 version I prefer over the original.

I've got an idea. I'm gonna put the limited edition releases in the 2004 box set, with also putting in the bonus disc in its own case and putting A Musical Journey in the RotJ case.
