Nahh, I did the same thing, looked at the post and thought "Mr K will pick this one up".

So, does the difference between NSTC systems explain why Japanese LD's often seem to look better than their American counterparts?
I wonder if the OT bonus discs are coming out in Japan...

Where were you in '77?

Yep, that is why they look better.
Although if you are in a PAL country and your player isn't setup right US NTSC discs can look really really bad as setup/pedastal whatever you want to call it can end up being added twice, resulting in a really washed out picture.

Basically the Japanese discs have an extra 7% or so of range to play with, so more detail in the shadows etc. Also, the Japanese laserdisc owner was considered a more discerning viewer, so extra effort was usually put into Japanese releases to squeeze the best quality out of a transfer.

That begs an interesting question, actually. Which I have posted to a different thread...

Will the Japanese OUT look better than the US OUT?

the Japanese laserdisc owner was considered a more discerning viewer

If that were true, why did they ever go do VCDs (while the U.S. did not) which IMHO look like crap compared to laserdiscs.

Heck, VCD looks crappier than VHS. I never got it. I got S-VCD, but not regular VCD. It was just a junky format.

Uhm, that's a completely different market, guys.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Wasn't VCD more an Asia thing rather than a Japanese thing? Wikipedia says it never caught on in Japan, Europe or the US.

In other words, any place where there was already a thriving legitimate home video market.

I lived in Japan for three years, and never saw a VCD of any kind for sale. But used LDs? Hell, yeah.

Felt I had to chime in - I havent visited this site for a long time (since it seemed that we'd all got our wish) - but with the recent apparent debacle of the official DVD OUTs, I'd just like to say 'thanks' to the x0project!
I've just been looking round the site and the dedication you guys have is incredible. It looks brilliant - I especially liked the mini-tutorials btw - very interesting. Fantastic starfield software too!!!!

Sorry if I 'threw' the conversation there...

That's just fine, it's always nice to see the X0 team get applause. They deserve a lot of credit for the excellent quality of the project they are involved with, and all the hard work it takes to achieve that level of quality.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Yes the X0 team deserve all the applause for the dedication and effort they are putting into this project, I personally cant wait to see these in all their glory, its good to see that they and other fans are prepared to put their precious time and effort into these films where others are not..

I have seen a lot of screenshots from the new DVD and I think that the X0project will absolute DESTROY the official 2006 DVD!
Author

I cant seem to find any screenshots from the DVDs except the ones posted here - where have you seen 'lots'? - I'd love to see them so I can get comparing!!

It might, the film problems will definately be cleaned up. I expect it to be better on some fronts for sure, I expect Moth3r's will come out better in some aspects than the OUT as well, (and there are likely to be some scenes from PAL transfers that have more detail than both the OUT and the X0 project) but there are likely to be scenes that have more detail on the OUT unless Lucasfilm really screws it up.

But the X0 will be the only version so far that fixes the film artifacts and that alone will make an more enjoyable viewing experience.

I think we need to start calling the Lucasfilm release the O-OUT (Official Original Unmolested Trilogy) to distinguish it from other O-OT/OUT preservations.

I prefer LOUT. "Lucasfilm Original Unaltered Trilogy." It also confirms many people's view of the man (men) running it.

Edited TWICE for spelling. (Of the same word even!)

Is the fan version going to be POUT (Preservationists' Original Unaltered Trilogy) or FLOUT (Fan-edited Lucas Original Unaltered Trilogy)?
Author
Time
TROUT. True, Real, Original Unaltered Trilogy. Something we're apparently still not getting. Instead, Lucas is releasing the
SNOUT. Selling 'Nother Original Unaltered Trilogy.
While the X0 guys work on the
KRAUT. Kinda Recreated Anamorphic Unaltered Trilogy.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

How 'bout we just call the official one GOUT, George's Original Unaltered Trilogy.
Author

GOUT is a condition in which uric acid, a waste product that occurs naturally occurring within the body, rises above normal levels. Rather than being flushed by the kidneys and through the urine, as it normally is, it forms crystals and deposits in the joints. These deposits give rise to inflammation of the joints, causing pain, swelling, redness and tenderness of the area. Most typically the joint affected is that of the big toe, but gout can also affect the ankle, knee, foot, hand, wrist and elbow. Uric acid crystals may also form deposits in other areas such as under the skin or in other soft tissues, and in the kidney or urinary tract.

You might want to rethink that.

I get that from time to time, and I think Laserman was referring to the upcoming official release. so I thing GOUT suits the upcoming release good.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.
