But what about Circuit City, Best Buy, etc., Neil? Those obviosuly aren't from dealers who broke the boxset apart because they are IN THE ACTUAL STORE. I would imagine a retailer of that size would need permission from LFL to do such things.

Again, I really think this is simply a case of Lucas allowing them to be released individually right out of the gate, and hence the reason for the words used in the official response.

I managed to buy the LOTR extended DVD box that stores the three individual extended DVD sets -- the yellowish one that came with the DVDs when they were sold as an extended edition trilogy boxset -- from a shop (since I bought the three DVD sets individually), which implies that the owner took the boxset apart and sold the individual titles separately. I guess that's different since the three titles were sold separately anyway (though I'm sure it's still illegal, and New Line wouldn't be happy if they found out), and it was a small shop that's not part of a chain, so no one probably cared.

You're all mistaken and or delusional. I'm going to file this discussion along with the ones about "A New Hope" being there in 1977 and 1979, Biggs being in some prints of Star Wars and Luke throwing the hook twice.

Numerous people from all over the U.S. have SEEN the movies sitting on the shevles (and in my case, actually picked them up to look at the backs b/c I never purchased the '04 boxed set so I had no clue [other than pics] of what the individual DVDs looked like) of these big stores with our own eyes but we are "delusional". The next time I am in one of these big stores and I see them sitting on the shelf, I will take a picture for you, okay? lordjedi, Obi Jeewhyen, please feel free to do the same.

Although I imagine, Neil, you'll find some way to write that off too. "See, you are all 'delusional' so you all must've formed a plan to place the DVDs there yourselves and then take a picture of it...".

I must say that I am surprised that you would be shocked at the fact that Lucas is feeding us BS and/or bending the truth. After the countless examples over the years of doing just that, why is this all so hard to believe?!?

I'm actually going to head over to Best Buy during my lunch, just to see if they still have them. It's not the Best Buy I saw them at originally, but they should still have them. Unfortunately, the only camera I have is on my phone, which doesn't have any internet ability on it, so you'll just have to take my word for it if I see them or not. I might even swing by a Circuit City since they're pretty close too.

It is possible that all I saw was the different art on the 3 disc package that was released for Christmas '05. I only remember doing a doubletake because it was the 77 poster art and not the crap gold or silver box I was use to seeing. I also remember almost flipping out, thinking it was the original version, only to realize it was the '04 version repackaged. I'm still going to check the store at lunch though

There's no need to photograph DVDs at the local Best Buy, since they could easily be faked. In any event, I really don't think any are going to be on the shelves less than a week from a re-release, and I don't think we need to feed the troll any more on this issue.

Ah............holy crap......I'm sorry to everyone here on this thread.....it wasn't my intention to start up something.

I just didn't remember seeing anything about being able to buy the SE's by themselves back a year ago......

I guess it is possible that Best Buy and other retailers got stuck with loads of inventory and with permission or not,
broke up the boxed set in order to get rid of them.....

ESHBG, the description from one of the sellers on Amazon says this about the ANH DVD...
First class shipping. New but without shrinkwrap. This DVD comes from a box set. Free priority shipping upgrade on all orders of 3 items or more. We only deal with original U.S. releases and original ...

Even though Neil and I disagree, I enjoy the discussion and I will readily admit that what I saw at these retailers could've either been done without Lucas' permission or with their permission, but never marketed by Lucas as individuals and left up to the retailers to do so.

And yeah, your theory is a good one and maybe the retailers broke them up on their own*. But whatever the case may be, my point in all of this is to show that it appears as if the SEs never really sold *that* well, and I am sure well under what Lucas wanted/expected. If they do suddenly sell it won't take a genius to see it is all because of the OUT's doing....no matter how Lucas would try to ignore it, the proof would be right there. And just imagine how much more would sell if it was a quality transfer! I feel that there is one thing Lucas loves more than his art, and that is MONEY! Once he sees he can make some major $ off of this, there is no telling what he will do next.

*That would actually be better for my case, as the boxed set was selling so poorly that the retailers had to do whatever they could to get rid of the product.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I think it probably fits me best (mistaken and confused). What I saw was so long ago that I honestly don't know if it was single DVDs or if it was (more likely) the 3 disc box set. Like I said, I did a double take, picked up the box, noticed it was the '04 set, and put it back down and out of my memory. Of course, that doesn't mean no one else has seen them separate. I wouldn't put it past any retailer to sell them separately. What was LucasFilm going to do? Threaten to keep them out of any future distribution? If the '04 set sold as poorly as is being stated, I don't think they'd care that much.

Neil, I don't know who you are, but it quite one thing to make verifiable observations about differences in films, merely as a consumer ... and entirely another thing to make definitive statements about product releases of entertainment corporations, as a consumer.

That said, I am also willing to contemplate that retailers broke up the sets on their own. But there is no evidence of that, beyond your word.

Calling people 'delusional' does not help your credibility, in my eyes.

All the ads I've seen so far are saying that these DVD releases are the first time the DVDs have been released individually (officially, anyhow). I'm not saying that retailers didn't break up boxed sets, if people saw them in stores that way, then that's what happened, but this truly is the first time that Lucasfilm has sold the DVDs as singles.

Is this a joke? From everything we've been told, it is the original theatrical version. Sure, it's not a remastered anamorphic release, but it's essentially true nonetheless. It's a bad quality transfer from a laserdisc master with a possibly recreated crawl, but it's still the original.

What I mean is, original sound effects that were not tarted up (notably in the cell block sequence), blaster hits that were toned down (also notably in the same sequence). These changes were already made before 1993, I believe. Unless the film is restored to 1977 conditions in every aspect, it is not the original theatrical release. And one false advertising claim leads me to question other advertising claims.
