Poll: Do You Think the OUT will be Released Again in '07?

I voted yes, in the vain wishful hope that George Lucas will find it in his heart to release a nice clean new transfer from original sources in full anamorphic glory!

I would even fork out the cash to buy his uber box set penned for next year if such a release included clean, but untouched anamorphic OT dvds!

I voted No. I don't think that they will put them in the 07-box (if there will be one). And if the OUT makes it to the box, I think it will be the same as the september release.

I sure as hell wish that in the 07-box, there will be anamorphic cleaned up versions of my all time favourite movies... but I wont hold my breath.

The Special Special Special Edition boxset will be released in 2007.

For the next ten years or so, Lucasfilm's tentpole releases will consist of the theatrical 3D saga, possible home releases of that (if it's doable), the TV show, and HD releases of the Special Special Special Edition. After that, maybe we'll get the OUT in anamorphic widescreen (standard definition).

I'll put my $.02 in:

One part of me thinks he will add the OUT in the '07 box set (IF there is even one; I am starting to have my doubts about that, though) but it will be the exact same thing in the 09/12 release. I really don't see Lucas dumping the money into something he supposedly wishes wasn't even around anymore. On the eve of the next format taking off and replacing DVDs, I think IF they decide to do a better OUT releases it will be for the next format. But the part that really sucks is it took how many YEARS to get these on DVD, so how many more will we need to wait?!?

Also, I really think Lucas and company are a little shocked at just how good some of the fan edits are. To me this is evident with the menus they are using and how close they look to some of the fan edit's menus. I could really hear Lucas saying, "If they want this to be anamorphic, someone will do it, but I'm not going to waste my time..."

But then another part of me looks at the last few years and I see the '04 SE release, the '05 SE release, and now in '06 the SEs are released AGAIN! What is to stop them from doing the same exact thing next year and years to come with the OUTs? I HIGHLY doubt the marketing whore Lucas is will let something as momentous as the 30th anniv. pass on by with nothing. Plus, Lucas is releasing a sub-par product on 09/12 IMO and it is STILL selling well so I am sure he will take notice to this and the fact that if he does a better OUT release, it will sell.

I don't know what to think anymore, and that's what bugs me...

EDIT: And I am wondering if this OUT was even Lucas' idea in the first place, and if people in his company actually talked him into it. If this is the case then it clearly shows dissention in the ranks, and maybe they will be able to push for a proper OUT release.

Oh and one more thing: someone I know recently said to me that they thought for sure this will be it for the OUT. When I asked why they thought that, they said, "Because it says it is a limited release. Just like the 'Faces' set, what they said was it for the OUT for a long, long time." I told them that "Limited" is just a play on words and this doesn't mean a thing. If they release the OUT again they could easily say that what was limtied about 09/12 was A) the packaging B) the fact that it was bundled with the SEs C) that they could be purchased seperately. If they wanted to be really, really dirty they could say that it was as close to the original as they could get because it wasn't anamorphic, 5.1 sound, cleaned up picture, etc.

I really put nothing past that man/his company anymore and I take everything they say with a grain of salt. After being told the '04 DVDs were SW (and keep in mind I was expecting the '97 SEs and was fairly okay with that) but then learning of even MORE changes, I lost what little hope I had left...

Am I the only one here who doesn't want an altered 5.1 soundtrack?

I've heard on another web site that he will relese a 6 movie box set for the 30th anniversery on DVD (not HD as the technology is to new), and the OUT will contain bonus features from the Lucas vaults including deleted scenes here- although there is nothing to back this up this claim.

I don't want it either. I want the original mixes in their 1.0, 2.0, and 4.1 glory =]

Well it is obvious that Lucas will release something next year. It's the 30th Ann. for gosh sakes! And if you saw the bonus features on the ROTS DVD, you probably noticed them working on a digital Yoda for EP1, to match up with the rest of the PT. I am sure that will be a part of the box set next year. I am hoping further fixes to the OT will be finished, such as making every single lightsaber in every single shot look good. But if the OT is being released in that set, and it is anamorphic or something I will be very mad, because I am buying them this year!

I'm not worried about the sound really, and 2.0 is fine with me. What does bother me *somewhat* is the whole not being anamorphic thing...

No.

I think they will be released in the 2007 set, and I think we'll see anamorphic versions this time.

I think this whole "bonus material" crap is a test, and the way Lynne Hale's response is so carefully worded ("The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material"), leads me to believe that they will have new transfers done of the OOT as non-bonus material .

These DVDs will sell very well, and George Lucas is too greedy not to cash-in on selling us the OOT all over again, and he can't do that without new anamorphic transfers. His cash-cow is running out of milk and he doesn't have a whole hell of a lot left to sell us.

VERY good point, Mielr, and I too get the impression that one probably should read between the lines with his statement.

^^True. I think the OUT's will be available again, the only difference is this is the only time we will be able to buy them as single movies. I also am sure we won't be seeing the '77 version of Star Wars again (if it is the actual version, which doesn't look likely), it will be "A New Hope" from now on if it is released as an OUT disc in the future.

Yeah, and I really do wonder if that is part of the ploy too with the whole "Limited" thing. "Well this cleaned up, anamorphic version of the OUT doesn't have the original crawl so it's not technically the theatrical version like the 09/12 release was..."

And at the time of this post, the votes are overwhelmingly going to "No". Interesting...

We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.
That's pretty unequivocal.

True, but my counter to that is:

1. LFL is a big company, and one hand typically does not know what the other is doing.

2. We have heard COUNTLESS times that we would never see the OUT again, yet here it is.

3. What exactly constitutes a restoration? Does simply making it anamorphic count, or releasing it on the next medium, or... count? Maybe he is simply saying that there are no tenative plans to clean it up and remove garbage mattes, clean up the picture, fix the special effects that are off, etc.?

I woudn't take anything said from anyone at that company as gospel...

Just a quick suggestion for you for next time when you make a poll, if what you are looking for is a semi-accurate result.

Make the poll balanced. Don't give one side variations of the same answer, or your results will be skewed.

There is one No option, and two Yes options. You asked a simple question, then split the Yes vote with specifics.

Actually, I wanted to see how many people thought we would get the same version, a cleaned up version or none at all, and hence why my poll asks those specific questions.

Thanks a lot for the input, though!

Hmmm... I'd never considered the option of possibility three til I visited this poll.

Yeah, but so is "ONE LAST TIME!"

There's no question that LFL could do a U-turn on this promise (as has been pointed out they have done so on many others). I just meant I didn't think they were trying to do clever wording to leave the option open.

I have been thinking a lot lately. I have the set all pre-orded on amazon.com and all but am thinking about canceling. Why? Because if the OOT is just released again in the 30th ann. set next year I will be very mad, and I will be getting that set irregardless because I know they are going to be fixing up some other things as well. So what I am going to do, and what I suggest others do, is to hold off on this release, (unless you know you would never get the 30th ann. set) and next year when the 30th ann. set comes out, and if it has the OOT as part of it, in any capacity, then you've saved money. If it doesn't happen to have it, you will still be able to buy it as used off of amazon or ebay. Used things on amazon are normally very cheap, and not even always used.

Wow AJ, you change your mind fast. You said in another thread that everyone should buy it because it either wouldn't be released again or if enough people buy it that there's a better chance of it getting a proper transfer. So, which is it? Or was that one of those "You should all buy it, but I'm not going to"? I don't mean to flame here either, I'm genuinely curious which way you're going on this.
