It was on the news (TV), with the people who were filming the documentary. Here's a link to an Australian newspaper:

They called it an accidental death on TV... but it was no "accident" - he was attacked by a stingray! Alright, it's not common to die from it... but it's no more an "accident" then dying from a shark bite. The stingray barb went through his chest and punctured his heart.

PS: He was only popular in the USA.
