yes NTSC just like the in the USA.
Not quite: Japan uses NTSC-J, which has no pedestal (I think it's called?). So blacks run from 0, not 16. In other words, NTSC-J is a little better than what's available in the US or Canada, because it has a slightly wider dynamic range. Of course, it sort of makes sense that this fix was made, because NTSC wasn't adopted in Japan until after it could have been fixed in North America, too. But by then it was too late...
