Another disqualification. There are worlds between the first non-anamorphic Spaceballs release and the new release with a new anamorphic transfer available.
I'm talking about the non-anamorphic one, and it looks just fine.Originally posted by: Vigo
Yeah, and it will most probably hold. OOT = Bonus Material = upconverting the NTSC source on a PAL disc.
That's still just speculation.

I'm not pissed they aren't anamorphic.

At least GL didn't give us a DVD version of the full-screen pan-and-scan OT. And you guys thought it couldn't be any worse. Believe me ... it COULD BE.

You know, that is very true and I never even thought of that *shudder*

the one thing you guys seem to forget is if you start out with a crappy source all you'll end up with in the end is a tird. I have the definitive collection laserdisc set, which looks like shit but it's the best you can get on a ntsc laserdisc player. The oot trilogy dvd is also going to look like shit because It's using the same source. The same digital laserdisc master they passed over using as a medium for restoration to put the films back in theaters, that is why they restored the negatives for the special edition.

So if they thought the source was shit for theaters and for any future home video release why are they using it for the new dvd release? All they need to do is find the selected takes on film and restore them for the dvd for the scenes that were not restored for the special edition. were talking about 10 to 20% of the footage not having to do a whole new remaster. They could take the time do the color correction right and actually give a restoration company ample time to do so, not a 3 month rush to cash in.

for those of you morons who claim anamorphic is not the orginal version it was shot anamorphically in panavision and cinemascope at 2:35:1 ratio and released on 35mm and 70mm prints. idiots

And yes there are theatrical film prints that exist in private collections vaults and film archives the world over, that may be dirty but have significant better picture than these dvd will, and with a little clean Up they would've been a better source. The original negatives the interpositives and especially that dye transfer print for star wars in george's collection should've been used for this release, for not giving these films proper treatment is beyond the pale of the norm it's pure idiocy from a self styled master of film preservation. original vision my ass, he can take his special edition's and prequels and shove them.

Hey boris you must think you know more about this issue than Richard Harris does the way you go on supporting Pucas blatant attempt to LUca$h in

He will not even let conventions screen the original versions of the films, If I ever got rich I'd buy my own prints of the films and screen them in my home I love them that much. What's that George? you'd send your stormtrooper nazi yes men gestapo to my door to prevent me from reliving my favorite films Of my childhood if I could get my hands on them.

The same digital laserdisc master they passed over using as a medium for restoration to put the films back in theaters, that is why they restored the negatives for the special edition. No SD video master would ever have been considered as a source for theatrical restoration, no matter how good it was (except maybe by boris). The question is what makes a good home video version now. The DC master (note to eros: "DC" stands for "Definitive Collection", sometimes also shortened to "DefCol") is arguably the best existing video source. If you look at bactaOT's screencaps (note to eros: "screencaps" is an abbreviation of "screen captures," which refers to the result of the process of capturing a frame of video or extracting a frame from already captured video) above you'll see that the DC version looks better than the '04 DVD (note to eros: "'04" is an abbreviation referring to the year "2004"; "DVD" initially stood for "Digital Video Disc", later upgraded to "Digital Versatile Disc"). Why? Because the DC looks like Star Wars, whereas the '04 looks like the PT (note to eros: "PT" stands for "Prequel Trilogy," a term used to collectively refer to "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace", "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith").

It is weird how the softer image does feel more like Star Wars than the 04 DVD?

I guess this could be down to the fact that I just got used to watching the original through a kind of soft focus haze all these years. The colours feel more natural too.

Yeah, totally. IMO the digital crap LFL uses makes everything seem a little too real, too sharp and very, very cold. It's almost as if your brain can't process it and automatically labels it as "fake", so a sense of warmth is lost. That is exactly why I hate too much CGI in movies. PT = a good example of too much. LOTR = close to the perfect blend IMO.

"I'm talking about the non-anamorphic one, and it looks just fine."

If you are so willing to settle with what Lucas is giving you, why are you here?

"OOT = Bonus Material = upconverting the NTSC source on a PAL disc."

"That's still just speculation."

How so, considering that's what was done for the LDs? What makes you think he's going to do a new PAL transfer, when it's already been officially stated that the NTSC transfer will not be redone? You certainly seem to be going out of your way to give Lucas the benefit of a doubt.

Unabashed love for Lucas is one thing, but ignoring historical fact is another.

P.S. Now that I think about it, didn't a French magazine make a comment about the PAL DVDs as well? I don't recall the specifics, though I'm sure boris is willing to guess it's a new transfer.

If anyone who has the new OOT dvds can make screen captures of the same frames in the screenshot comparison thread i think that would go a long way to getting a more accurate picture of the relative quality, specifically with comparison to Moth3r's transfer.

The discs come out in only ten days, and on Monday they will most likely be showing some clips of the discs on the Home Shopping Network.

And from now on when people post screen captures of the Offical OOT, can you please not crop out the black bars? It's a little dishonest to post them looking like a full anamorphic screen capture....

People should be able to see exactly what they'd be getting if they decided to buy the OOT....

Those of us with widescreen TVs or monitors may appreciate it, however.

How's that? Don't you understand that on your widescreen TV the Offical OOT won't be anything like the screen captures in this thread? It's going to be this tiny litttle movie in a sea of black, of course you could zoom in which always looks like shit, but to each his own....

I know this, that the screen caps in this thread of the OOT were not zoomed in on, so if you do this on your own TV it will look worse than it does here....
