Hi ocp,
do you have another link to the cover, the one on demonoid wont show up for me,and also, you didnt make a "Directors Cut" specific disc and case art?
that would have been cool,to differenciate the two.
thanks for MArk II,looking forward to seeing it

The link to the cover art is valid, and I call it the Recobbled Cut since it isn't the Director's Cut (though it's an approximation of such). There aren't two versions that would require different names.

I'm baffled by people's questions sometimes.

You're still cool with me tho darkjedi.

I watched the whole camera tests reel... good grief, it's awesome to see all these finished shots in pencil form. Especially the "death chute" near the end of the film.

A lot of curiosities, though... I spotted pencils for the shot right after the "flower ballet" shot with Yum-Yum placing them in the vase. You see it several times, with each instance becoming more refined. The 360 degree tightrope shot (with the thief) is shown completely finished with a complete background. Yet the partial take used in the film is from the "test" take with rough backgrounds! It's a really awesome shot since there's several layers to the background with it all shifting in perspective. I'm guessing it never shot on film, just on video for a test.

The letterboxed Princess tape looks quite good... a step up from the workprint. I like how we can finally see a properly centered version... with the workprint being too cropped on the left and the 16x9 DVD exposing too much on the left. The workprint-only shots in the Warner trailer are much sharper and clearer, but they have a lot of dot crawl.

Well done for getting all those discs out, ocp! A quick update on the poster: it's been scanned, but I haven't got the file yet. I'll be seeing my friend on Monday, with luck, so I can send it to you next week. Sorry it's taken so long.

Rock.

Patrick - go back a bunch of pages and look for my review of the pencil tests reel. It should make sense to you now.

Incidentally you hadn't asked me for that particular disc - I threw it in cos I thought you'd like it.

MAN! This thread is MASSIVE! You would have thought that there were DVD covers posted in here or something!

We do have fun in this thread.

Trying to get an official Disney release of a lost animated classic takes time, and needs big thread power. We got big thread power.

Um, on second thought that needs no comment.

Screeners of the new "Thief" disc haven't been sent to DVD reviewers yet (per the Disney/Touchstone/Weinstein/etc. reviewer at the Home Theater Forum). I haven't even recieved a reply from Amazon.com for cover art confirmation. I'm guessing they're following the theatrical release by waiting until the last minute. Probably a wise decision since many critics who did review the film completely trashed it as a rip-off...

I live close to a Best Buy, so I'll just take a trip there so I can read the back cover myself.

And remember that we can always rent it or get it from Netflix instead of buying it.

Well, they don't have a listing for it yet. I really think that stores will have no clue it's a reissue, but rather a price reduction. This is probably why no one is really listing it yet.

Yes - it's actually a bit doubtful this release will make it to Netflix. But we'll see.

One of my usual sources who I thank very much has sent in some scans of drawings from the witch in a basket scene - has a whole stack of them, but lacks the time and big scanner to scan more than a few. Also the German version of the Liquidator titles, and another version of a bit of a Williams Commercials showreel from 1986, which is short and doesn't have anything I don't on it sadly ....

Just got the Mark II DLded. Incredible. I'm saving the Mark I version 'cause I like workprints... but man, this is just heaven. You are king, sir.

I just watched Mark II tonight. I am VERY impressed. Fantastic piece of work.

Small navigation flaw in the disc... after the movie ends it doesn't go back to the root menu it just stops (or in my player skips to the next disc).

Matt Richardson from Poptique.com has just sent me a pretty decent DVD version of I Drew Roger Rabbit - best I've had so far. It's not amazing DVD quality like the versions of The Thief Who Never Gave Up I had, but it is from a 1st generation old PAL VHS tape. The quality won't impress anyone, but it is the best I've had.

Ben - TequilaMockingbird - has emailed me his regrets about not getting the high quality Thief, Howard the Duck and Extended Muppet Movie material to me over these past 4 months. He's been busy and doesn't have a DVD-R recorder - just DVD-RAM, which he worries won't be compatible.

My Richard/Thief collection is now at Disney, and being enjoyed.

Completely unrelated - did a bit of stand-up comedy at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood yesterday. Went pretty well.

Some more info on the "Collector's Edition" of The Thief and the Cobbler to be released by Weinstein/Genius on November 21. I got this info from OnVideo.org:

The Thief and the Cobbler (1993) Animated adventure about a shy shoemaker who falls in love with an adventure-loving princess. Voices of Vincent Price, Jennifer Beals, Eric Bogosian, Jonathan Winters, Toni Collette, Matthew Broderick. Boxed in collectible pop-up packaging featuring the colorful characters and castle; $19.95. (The Weinstein Co./Genius Products).

Before anyone crows that the pop-up packaging may be the only special feature, the 2-disc claim made by that one guy has to have some basis in fact. If it were just the same disc as the September 12 release, there'd be no point in holding it back for two more months...

If I find more info on other advance-info sites, I'll share it.

No it doesn't - he thought it was a 2 disc set when that's not mentioned anywhere.

Maybe they need extra time to produce the packaging?

Heheh.

A pop-up Golden City designed by the same company that gave us the old VHS art?

(shudder) can't wait.

You know, looking back at it, you're right. *Wah wah wahhhhh*

And thinking about it, I'm more and more convinced that the Weinsteins only control the Arabian Knight hackjob. How they even own that, when they didn't take any of the Miramax/Dimension catalog with them after splitting from Disney, is beyond me...

At least we'll get Arabian Knight with superior quality and framing than what has come before.

Possibly.

If not, it's now in Region 1.
