Rodenberry's vision, aside from being naive, is what destroyed the franchise. A story in which none of the characters are supposed to be in conflict with eachother because of the utopia the Federation has wrought leaves very little room for character development. Also, the "reset button" at the end of every episode was SO annoying.

I've been watching the TNG box sets recently (working on season 5 now), and there's plenty of conflict between various characters--even within the Federation itself.

It does tend to be episodic, but watching the show still has its rewards.

I thought DS9 was the best of them. Definitely worth watching, as is TNG in most cases. However, I guess I've just become jaded over the spin-offs given the awful direction they went in, combined with what's being done now with shows like Lost and BSG. None of the spin-offs ever approached the chemistry of the original with the "big 3" characters. I just can't get worked up while watching Picard and Data prancing around together in Sherwood Forrest.

I will say that the last year of Enterprise when Manny Coto took over from Braga was much better in terms of quality. Have you noticed how dated TNG seems now?

Yes, I'm watching TNG reruns on spike more or less every day and it is very dated (still enjoyable though). But then I remind myself that the show first sired almost 20 years ago. Hard to believe really.

You mention Lost, which IMO is one of the best TV shows ever (I was reluctant to jump on the band wagon to begin with but now I'm hooked), and I think continuous story arc shows definitely beat the episodic 'reset button' approach. Another of my all time favourite shows is the X-Files, which was sort of mix of the story arc and reset button styles.

I doubt we will ever actually see a Peter Jackson Hobbit movie, even though I'd love for there to be one. But I'd like to be proven wrong.
As for continuous story arcs, these type of shows bug me because you have to watch them all, in order, and can't miss an episode. I tried to watch Lost, but never could watch it regularly every week, so I quickly got 'lost' and couldn't follow the story anymore.

TNG first aired 20 years ago? I didn't know that. I remember when it first came out. Now I feel old...

This thread should be renamed the "Development Hell" thread. Indie 4, Terminator 4, the new Jurassic Park, The Hobbit, so many movies that will probably never see the light of day.

Most of which I certainly hope never see the light of day - except for the Hobbit. I wouldn't mind a well done Hobbit adaptation.

I wouldn't mind a well-done steak, either.

Who wouldn't like a well-done steak? (besides the vegetarians of course)
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Not a big steak fan. I use garlic.

Yep - TNG first aired in 1987. And I hear what you are saying about story arc shows, but DVD and broadband internet have gone some way towards fixing that problem.

To be honest, my favorite era of Star Trek were films 2-4. I liked DS9 and TNG well enough, but Voyager never did much for me. The Next Generation films started off alright but after a while it felt like they turned Picard into Kirk, and while I like Kirk well enough, I'd rather Picard acted like Picard as opposed to Picard acting like Kirk. Never watched "Enterprise". Not sure this prequel thing about Kirk & Spock as teens or 20 somethings is gonna be all that good though.

Speaking of Star Trek, TNG is on right now so I'm off.

WE DON'T NEED A NEW STAR TREK MOVIE!!!!!

And if we do, stop clinging to Kirk and Spock. They had six movies, three seasons, and 40 years of conventions a repeats.

Plus, TNG was much better than any Star Trek series, as were the movies, even at thier week points.

Never seen Terminator, but when I do, I don't think part three will be on my Netflix Q.
Watch DarthEvil's Who Framed Darth Vader? video on YouTube!

You can also access the entire Horriffic Violence Theater Series from my Channel Page.

If you haven't seen them, do not ever see 3. Not only is is terrible, but it manages to also ruin the first two in the series and make them all suck. It is very rare for a film to manage to do that.

I'd like to see a tv movie that resolved some of the issues DS9 left open, but it'll probably never happen.

Anyone a B5 fan? They're making some direct-to-dvd 1/2 hour "movies" about the characters that take place after the series ended, I believe.

I've heard 3 being the best of the odd films before.
