Star Trek gets better treatment than Star Wars... — Page 2

Wait and see is probably a good idea at this point. I'm not crazy about them messing with the classic opening theme music though. And if the original untouched episodes are never released on future formats, that's just as bad as leaving the original cut of the first Trek movie behind to gather dust on Laserdisc and videotapes. And the effects in the so-called "Director's Edition" apparently were not done to HD resolutions, so they'll have to redo that one too!

Where were you in '77?

If they would only do it to look like the best effects possible IN 1968 (2001 A Space Odyssey) this would be fine. Instead, they're going to make it look like the butt-ugly effects on the new shows.

I've always said that Lucas would be hailed as a genius and loved by us all if he had made retro-prequels, i.e. use todays CGI technology to make films that look like they were made in the 70s. albeit without some of the less-desired things such as garbage mattes, wires on puppets, etc, etc.

So if these Star Trek Special Edition episodes look 'old but new' I think it will be cool. By that I mean don't change the ship designs, don't have crazy aliens with all kinds of mad CGI tentacles etc - use the CGI to create boxy, sixties style machinery and ships. Am I making sense?

War does not make one great.

Yes, and I think they are going that route. At least the ship designs are all the same ... and I would hazard that any background aliens will the the classic humanoids with funny heads.

But I agree that changing the opening theme music is a lame-brain idea that reeks of retardedness.

brannon braga no longer has anything to do with star trek, he actually helped get enterprise cancelled to get out of his contract so he could do the new galactica. As much as I like the new galactica damn him to hell for ruining enterprise, Garfield-stevens team took over but sadly not soon enough.

He has absolutely no respect for roddenberry's vision and legacy.

As for berman he was fired by viacom for the failure of both nemesis and enterprise.

The new star trek movie is under new management hence the removal of the rick berman story and berman's idea to have meyer direct it, this was going to be the first war between earth and romulas set sometime in the future after enterprise.

Now they want the young days of spock and kirk and for J.J. Abrams to write it and possibly direct it.

That being said I am strongly apposed to them doing anything to the original star trek, leave the special effects alone for god's sake they were good for the time and have a lot to do with the flavor of that show. They could track down the elements and study up on how they were originally done to restore them but beyond that is stupid.

I mean it's supposed to look 60's what's next replacing the cardboard sets with cgi ones the cheap warbrobe with cgi, the fake looking monsters and aliens and even william shatner's acting and sideburns?

How about they instead release the original version of city on the edge of forever with the music uncut.

as for a trek revival
People from the earlier days of trek could be brought in to help out in various creative ways. Leonard Nimoy or William Shatner, Judith and Garfield reeves-stevens. How about involving majel barret and her son.

And by the way i can tell the difference between a film shot in tradiotional methods from a digital cgi shot, and filmed models look less fake. I hate this digital world we live in now where all the movies look too fake with crappy cgi, and shot on digital video. Any cinematographer worth his salt knows motion picture film is better than digital video.

If this is the future then I say "Fight the future" . I'm starting to see a partern with the de-evolution of science fiction and movies and it's good old georgie's fault and is the downside to the success of star wars.

You don't believe me then read star wars on trial, it's got some good arguments for and against star wars. I tended to agree with stover but david brin made some brilliant points.

I think this is a somewhat interesting idea, though keep in mind I'm not really a Trekkie, I just find the series somewhat enjoyable. This doesn't seem like anything to get worked up about. I mean, really, the series is already out on DVD, so you're not losing anything. And its not like they're putting in a bunch of fart jokes. Lets not go crazy over something that's really not that important.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Okuda's onboard? Then I am, too.

After reading the TV Guide quote that Ozkeeper posted I am now definitely skeptical of this. I don't care what Okuda thinks Roddenberry would have wanted to do if he had possessed today's technology. The original show was made in the 60's with cheesy backdrops and sets. It was an idea of what the future would look like from that time and not today. The plain look of the Enterprise's sets are going to look drastically out of place next to complicated and shiny, computer-rendered models. Also, they're changing the space ports to have extra people and more life? I don't like this.

Sure, I'll withhold my judgement untill I see it, but this is most likely going to be way overdone.
