As for continuous story arcs, these type of shows bug me because you have to watch them all, in order, and can't miss an episode. I tried to watch Lost, but never could watch it regularly every week, so I quickly got 'lost' and couldn't follow the story anymore.

Yep - TNG first aired in 1987.
