It's definitely worth a read, and this is coming from a comics fan who watched the movie first. Alan Moore is hands down THE best writer in comics. It translates to the screen pretty well, but the Wachowski brothers et al definitely put their own personality into it - and the ending is a little different - but it's up to you to decide which ending is better. Basically, the graphic novel is so huge with so many substories that they had to cut out a few substories to fit the core story into one movie - which basically means they adapted the story appropriately for the movie genre.
